I'm really surprised at how well Don't Let Me Down is doing. I thought it would definitely be top 40, but not this super huge pop hit!

For reference, here's how Adele's Hello performed on airplay:
45-9-6-1
I think the BDS (not mediabase) impressions went something like: 30-73-106-145
No song has climbed to #1 faster [during the modern all-format airplay era].
Edited for clarity

Billboard Top 10 from 35, 30, 25, and 20 years ago: May 30, 198101 01 Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes (3rd of 9 weeks at #1)Still Love this song. Such a Classic. This 9 week reign seems pretty lengthy for this time period. Did this break any record.

There was no "rule", that is just the way it worked out. There never has been a "recurrent rule" for the #1 position

There was no rule preventing it; it just didn't happen prior to the change in chart methodology. There's a pretty interesting "Ask Billboard" from last year that talks about it (and the difficulties of comparing chart feats across multiple eras) that you can read here.

Well it's looking like Justin will be higher in his second week on the airplay chart than Adele was in her second week (position-wise at least, I don't know about AI). Extremely unlikely that he'll get #1 faster though, and not very likely he'll even get there in the same amount of time. However it looks like he'll reach the top 5 faster

Actually Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey both did it in 3 weeks: Michael with Black Or White: 10-2-1 Mariah with I'll Be There: 4-2-1 This is for the Hot 100 Airplay/Radio Songs chart, but it was before the all-format change in '98. As for TIWYCF, it's too early to tell if it will be a major #1 contender, especially since it's not smashing right away like CSTF and it has to compete with Needed Me. It's too bad people aren't talking much about Pink or Alicia Keys (yes, she just came out with a new song too), but I guess they don't stand much of a chance, maybe not even top 10.

When it comes to specific airplay records, I tend to refer only as far back as PPW began. I'm not sure when it started with Billboard but R&R (and subsequently Mediabase I guess) started tabulating airplay charts that way in April 1994. So anything before that I more or less take with a grain of salt.

I shall atone for not specifying I meant the "modern" airplay era.

I honestly don't see CSTF being #1 for as long as Uptown Funk. It just doesn't feel to me like the type of song to spend 14 weeks at #1. Maybe it'll be about as big as Love The Way You Lie. And I don't see TIWYCF peaking higher than #5 tbh I think it's exactly the type of song that could pull it off... given past examples. It's way more Uptown Funk or Happy than Love The Way You Lie. It's a feel good, danceable song with big cross-generational (and cross format) appeal. That's exactly the kind of song that can dominate for long periods of time. It's still very new. 6 months from now after its 10-15 week reign, it might "feel" more appropriate to be that massive than it does now. I don't ever think after one week, "this song is going to be #1 for 14 weeks." It just happens. None of this is to say that I think it's going to reign for 10-15 weeks, I just think i has all the makings of that type of song and is therefore entirely possible. Agree and I think a factor that could help this song's possible longevity is that the movie which this song is part of will open in NOVEMBER! The song will still be present in media once the movie's full promotion kicks in

I'm really surprised at how well Don't Let Me Down is doing. I thought it would definitely be top 40, but not this super huge pop hit! Do you think it's because of the drop? Or Daya's verses? Anyway of all the EDM hits it's still mystic how the ultra-hypnotizing You Know You Like It ends up peaking outside of top 10

Some good covers again in 1981 and 1986. May 30, 198101 01 Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes (3rd of 9 weeks at #1)This might be one of the most successful covers, especially in terms of the obscurity of the original version by Jackie DeShannon and the massiveness of Kim's version. 03 05 Stars On 45 (Medley) - Stars On 45 This studio band managed to popularize a lot of Beatles' hits within a disco undertone. This was the first time I heard songs like Nowhere Man, You're gonna lose that girl, We can work it out. 04 08 Sukiyaki - A Taste Of Honey One of three times this song reached the top 5. After Kiu Sakamoto and before 4PM's a Capella version in the 90s. Few songs have achieved that! May 31, 198601 01 Greatest Love Of All - Whitney Houston (3rd and final week at #1)More successful than George Benson's and in a way starting a key trend of Whitney's career: successfully covering a song and releasing it as a single

When DLMD was released, R was still gaining on radio. Don't you agree tho that DLMD is better than R?

The same with Celine Dion.

Another note, NO is still falling hard.

That goes to "Saving All My Love For You", which was originally released by Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr.

"No" really is collapsing dramatically. I can't think of another recent example that fell so hard so fast. On Billboard it went 9-15 last week, now it may be in the 30s and then it could possibly out of the top 50 the week after...
