can someone explain to me what the eighth-day effect is? so when a big new song is first released to radio a very large number of stations begin to play it on day 1. That day will easily be its biggest increase in total plays/audience. since the updates we get are based on a 7-day tracking period, the 8th day update will no longer include that first day of plays/audience, hence why there's normally a big drop on the 8th day for songs like this which are heavily promoted. It's because it gets a huge amount of adds on that first day compared to the days after that. I hope that made sense

Adds? You mean airplay.
Whenever a song has a MASSIVE first full day of airplay, it will invariably drop off the following week, because that first day of airplay is grossly inflated. When that same day the following week rolls around, it gets a level of airplay a lot more relative to its age, so all that extra audience and extra spins all fall off.
The 8th Day Effect is a recent phenomenon for the last few years because it isn't until recently that labels and radio started pushing these incredibly frontloaded radio premieres.

First day airplay isn't a product of stations adding a song though, in fact adds have nothing to do with it. Literally all that's happening in these first-day deals is that stations are playing the s**t out of them. Adds don't come into it until the following X-day (dependent on format). And an out-the-gate airplay blast doesn't necessarily mean stations will add the song either. When we see these massive first-week adds things, it looks impressive, but how many of those stations consciously decided to add X song to their playlist, and how many stations have just had it automatically added to their playlist due to hitting a certain spin threshold in a single day? Stations that auto-add songs aren't necessarily going to immediately put a highly-premiered song into rotation.

So the next #1 contenders after One Dance: Can't Stop The Feeling and This Is What You Came For..
Looking at the pretty amazing rolling CSTF had today, it's not going to slow down. It's possibly the fastest airplay climb I've ever seen. Meanwhile TIWYCF is experiencing a more traditional airplay trajectory reminiscent of a smash.
One can only hope CSTF makes it to #1 this week, he releases the video this week, and it peaks in airplay by the middle of June because of its meteoric rise.
As for TIWYCF...in a perfect world it will regain its lead over Justin in streaming within the next week or so, and continue to have nice gains on radio with the video coming in early-mid June.
Bam... #1 for both :)

Yikes at that 16.2 drop for JT due to the 8 day effect... It's a great hold, though? A week ago: 39. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE - Can't Stop The Feeling: 33.191 (+31.749)Yeah, don't most songs with hourly deals** end up losing like 2/3 or more of their first day after the rolling effect? Or am I imagining that? I'd have to look back at some old threads to fact-check that. Regardless, if I am not mistaken the way one has to view the rolling effect is to subtract the 8th day 'loss' from the first day's AI gain, and that is the actual amount of AI the song got on the 8th day. So in this case 33-16=17 - just under half of the first-day AI, still huge, and still in line with his updates for the second through 8th days. Also, the fact that even with a 33m 'loss,' it only lost two positions and is still in the top 10 is pretty much an indicator of how big CSTF is shaping up to be, or already is. Looking at the pretty amazing rolling CSTF had today, it's not going to slow down. It's possibly the fastest airplay climb I've ever seen. I'm now curious about what the fastest airplay climb is; I also cannot recall ever seeing a song climb in airplay this fast - more specifically, I cannot recall ever seeing a song climb in airplay this fast and not fall out of the top 10 for at least a brief moment b/c of the 8th day effect. To put it in perspective, if the gains continued at this same pace for the next 7 days he would overtake 7 Years by Friday and be over 200m AI by next Saturday. And there's no reason to think he's about to slow down in the next week. One of the DJs here was raving about it as he got ready to play it yesterday; radio is legit excited to spin this. Re: TIWYCF I do have a mild concern that it might become the Get Lucky to CSTF's Blurred Lines. I just have this feeling that CSTF is going to be oppressively massive for the next three-four months.

I honestly don't see CSTF being #1 for as long as Uptown Funk. It just doesn't feel to me like the type of song to spend 14 weeks at #1. Maybe it'll be about as big as Love The Way You Lie.
And I don't see TIWYCF peaking higher than #5 tbh

And I don't see TIWYCF peaking higher than #5 tbh I think it's exactly the type of song that could pull it off... given past examples. It's way more Uptown Funk or Happy than Love The Way You Lie. It's a feel good, danceable song with big cross-generational (and cross format) appeal. That's exactly the kind of song that can dominate for long periods of time. It's still very new. 6 months from now after its 10-15 week reign, it might "feel" more appropriate to be that massive than it does now. I don't ever think after one week, "this song is going to be #1 for 14 weeks." It just happens. None of this is to say that I think it's going to reign for 10-15 weeks, I just think i has all the makings of that type of song and is therefore entirely possible.

I wouldn't mind if Drake returned to #1 next week since that song feels really big right now too

It might also burn faster - like Hello did - and be more front-loaded if it keeps this crazy momentum up. That's another possibility. It's just not nearly AS huge as Hello was initially, or as downbeat. Impossible to predict at this point.

CSTF will be #2 or #3 depending on how many views the music video gets. Early projections: 1. One Dance - 130-115-36.0 = 56,000 2. Can't Stop the Feeling = 200-95-20.0 = 48,400 (would have got ~13-14M streams and around 43k points, if there was no video) 3. Panda - 90-70-36.0 = 47,000

And for TIWYCF, streaming is growing pretty fast and sales only slipped a bit which usually happens to songs after there first weeks on the chart. Airplay it's alright. It's at least climbing

16. SHAWN MENDES - Stitches: 76.562 (-0.424) Impressive, isn't it? :) The slow moving AC chart is helping Stitches. It's #2 at AC radio.

What did BTW's 2nd week of airplay look like?
The fastest airplay climber I can remember is The Rembrandt's "I'll Be There For You" which hit #1 on Pop in 4 weeks. In terms of overall, it's probably BTW.

Another thing Justin's song has going for it, and this is just from what I've seen myself, is that people aren't really talking about it the way they do for big singles from Gaga, or Beyoncé, or Britney, or whoever. Maybe it's still too new to be in the general scope but I haven't seen any mention of it on Facebook or Twitter (outside of expected chart-related accounts). Why is that good? People might not get sick of it as easily. Even constantly hearing about or reading about a song or artist increases the burn rate. Justin's song is flying to the top but not really the centre of attention while doing it.

3 NE The Edge Of Glory - Lady Gaga 1 1 SOS - Rihanna (3rd and final week)ah, some of the best content from Ri and Gaga! I wish SOS had gotten some of Work's weeks at #1 and Edge Of Glory some of Born This Way's (not that I didn't like BTW, but it burned out on me pretty fast and I never loved it to begin with, and especially that it blocked Cee-Lo from #1) 15 years ago (5/19/2001)

I think Rihanna and Gaga were the artifices of that dance comeback. Regarding EOG, some of us thought that she missed an opportunity to reach #1 after she released such an underwhelming video. It's not a bad video but it paled in comparison to her latest, Judas, and to most of her videography in general. I still love it and think it's one of LG's finest :)
