What bugs me is that they could give GREAT audience impressions and bring tons of dance into the Hot 100 (lower rungs, at least) If they didn't have that fucking no-repeat-workday...

Hi this its me again. I AM STILL IN NEED OF PEOPLE to post or help with the top 103 countdown of 1997 on KTU I don't want to give up on this tho my searches have been useless 1997 is very important because i still have way less than 103 songs If anyone has a complete listing of songs or as many as possible...it would be greatly appreciated if you could post. I'm shootin for at least 90, but the actual countdown or most played throughout the year would be perfect. what were those rare songs on ktu in 1997?what songs in general were played that year and that year only?what version of Mmmbop was played?was seals fly like an eagle and kenny g's Havana spun on ktu? aside from the big songs like Gina g's ooh aah, Toni's unbreak and amber's one more night....what were other pop songs played?
These are the mysteries I need solved in order to get a better picture of KTU in 1997.
THANKS TO ALL

I'm not sure about specific remixes...maybe they're there, maybe not...but I think I just have a huge list of songs from their playlists that year. It's on a disk somewhere so I'll try to dig it up and post it.

But given that KTU was more of a dance station back then, the versions generally played would probably be Radio Edit.

Thanks to all for the imense help

Let Me Clear My Throat probably wasn't an actual playlist add for 1997.
I wouldn't be surprised if they played a mix of "How Bizarre".
"Love Is Alive", "Da Funk", "Around The World," and "Breaking All The Rules" were for sure played. Usher probably was too.

I wouldn't be surprised if they played a mix of "How Bizarre". There was a popular remix by Cibola.

Hi All,
I've recently listened to an aircheck from KTU taped back in April of 1996 and it brought back some great memories.
The songs I heard from on this include:
LOS DEL RIO - MACARENA KRISTINE W - ONE MORE TRY MARIAH CAREY - ALWAYS BE MY BABY TONY RICH PROJECT - NOBODY KNOWS LIL SUZY - WHEN I FALL IN LOVE LINA SANTIAGO - IT FEELS SO GOOD (SHOW ME YOUR LOVE) BILLIE RAY MARTIN - YOUR LOVING ARMS CELINE DION - BECAUSE YOU LOVED ME LA BOUCHE - BE MY LOVER FUGEES - KILLING ME SOFTLY FUN FACTORY - I WANNA B WITH U COOLIO - GANGSTA'S PARADISE
I'm still looking for KTU's top 103 most played list of 1997
It may be that some of songs crossed over into 97 and with KTU's recent back to 90's weekend I heard some of these.
Can anyone help with the 1997 list? Thanks!

I used to love when KTU played Shana's "I Want You" all the time. So random!

Does anyone know if they played this song on KTU like a decade ago? Its "SuReal's - You take my breath away".
I remember hearing this song once on radio somewhere around 2000 or 2001 when I used to live in New York City. I think it was probably KTU or the KTU mixshow. I'm not sure but its an awesome song. One of my favorite pure vocal trance of all time. Another thing I remember is that it was around the time Ian van Dahl's "Castles in the sky" & Opera Trance ft. Emma Shapplin's "Spente le stelle" was being spinned on KTU.

That is a great song! If you did hear it on KTU then it would probably have been in a mixshow or dance factory.
Spente Le Stelle was def played in 2000 / 2001 and the same for Castles in the sky which we know became a huge KTU hit.

Yes "Sureal's you take my breathe away" was pretty popular in the U.K. peaking at #15. Lange was the producer behind that song.
I always wondered why KTU never put "Castles in the sky" ever again on their playlist. They still have "Lasgo's alone" on their playlist to this day and they both charted similarily in the Hot 100 as well as both being similar in a way. Since its now a rhythmic AC format, I think "Castles in the sky" would be a good fit since its now a classic and was one of KTU's biggest songs in that era.
I was looking at the list of all the songs in this thread and I don't see a song that I'm pretty sure was played on KTU in the early 2000s. And thats "Marc et Claude's "Tremble". Underrated but a classic.

Marc Et Claude was played in mixshows only as far as I could remember. I don't think the station officially added it or it would have been on their top 103 of 2002 countdown.
Enigma's Sadness was played every now and then on KTU, but it's an early 90's song that was released prior to the start of the station.
At that point, Enigma was only a recurrent. Being released in '91 I think

This song was released in 1996 so maybe it was one of those rare songs that was heard in KTU around 96-97. I know I heard this song on KTU.
Brainbug - Nightmare
Don't know about their 1998 hit "Rain". That song is heard on Party 105 in Long Island here and then.

Does anyone have an aircheck of KTU from 2000/2001 as well as 2004? I found one from 1998 as well as a short one with Vic Latino from 2003 on the web.
Also, what was the mix version that KTU played on Savage Garden's "Truly madly deeply"?

I know the aicheck from 98 that you're talking about.
Savage Garden's "Truly Madly Deeply" is at the end of the clip and I thought it was just me but I also found that the version sounded different.
As far as I can tell any time that ktu played tmd recently, it has been the original radio edit.
Back then it had to have been a special mix made exclusive for the station.
I don't happen to have an aircheck from 2000/2001, but I did listen to the station alot in '04 and their top 103 from that year was the best. Everything played during the year made the countdown and it was all current music from '03/'04
The number one song was Deborah Cox "Easy As Life"

I knew I heard this song on KTU back around 1996. It wasn't on a mix show or anything. It was an eurodance song that goes something like "Is this the love" and then a rapper going "watching you, watching me". Thats all I remembered back then. Kinda similar to a Real McCoy song. I just found out that its: Masterboy - Is this the love?I was listening to the "Best of Masterboy" CD from Masterboy recently and it connected the dots and I remembered. It even has its own artist bio on KTU: www.ktu.com/iplaylist/artist/213582/Although I only heard it once on KTU.

Hi everyone,
I am still in search of Ktu's top 103 countdowns for 1997 and 1998 or any airplay chart for that matter.
KTU is getting back in the swing of things nowadays with a return to the type of music that really made them the beat of NY with songs like Alexandra Stan's "Mr. Sax-o-beat" Afrojack's "Take Over Control" and Swedish House Mafia's "Save The World"
I recently heard an old aircheck from back in late '96 where the songs from their new music file were Gina G's Ooh Ahh, Rockell's I Fell in Love, and Love Tribe's Stand Up.....its been 15 years. Also included in the aircheck were the original version of Celine's It's All Coming Back and Donna Lewis' I Love You Always and Forever....talk about a nice variety of chr, dance and ac
What was your favorite ktu song from back in the day?
Some of mine from '97 were:
Mr. President - Coco Jamboo Gala - Freed From Desire Ultra Nate - Free DJ Company - Rhythm of Love Le Click - Call Me Fun Factory - Close To You Spice Girls - Say You'll Be There

Afrojack is not in the Top 50 of its playlist. Swedish House Mafia is #47. Alexandra Stan is the highest of the three you mention at #21 but even she is behind a few recurrents from 2009.

The reason those songs were added on KTU is because 92.3 Now is playing those as well. They see them as a threat. 92.3 Now has added a few dance songs before that KTU never touched like Dennis Ferrer's "Hey Hey", Swedish House Mafia's "One", "Miami 2 Ibiza", etc. Don't expect KTU to be what it used to be before like in 1996-2006. KTU is owned by Clears Channel and that is all to it. KTU will play it safe and is targeting females from ages 25-54 years old. Their focus is mainstream dance and rhythmic sounds and will only add dance songs that fit their brand and that will crossover. Thats all to it. KTU also no longer sponsors Beatstock anymore since KTU is now part of the CHR family. I will say though that KTU now sounds a lot better than it did in 2007/2008 mainly because they no longer play the played out tired 70's disco. While they sound good now, core dance fans want more. EDIT: Lately WXRK 92.3 Now has been spinning these dance songs: Medina - Addiction Avicii - Levels ID

An article a few weeks back. Interesting read. Celebrating 15 Years of WKTU!Rob Miller, PD of WKTU WKTU..."The Beat of New York" is celebrating its 15th Anniversary and the station has never been more focused or sounded better than it does in 2011. From ratings to revenue it's one of Clear Channel's premiere stations in the number one radio market. It was back on February 9, 1996 that the station (then Country formatted WYNY) began airing a looped tape with sounds of a heart beating and liners about a new radio station coming. Then, on February 10 at 12 Noon, WKTU was re-launched as a Dance-based CHR at 103.5 FM. The station instantly skyrocketed to #1 in the ratings and enjoyed years of great success. But in the decade to follow both ratings and audience numbers began to fluctuate and decline as the marketplace changed. Nowadays, KTU is enjoying some of its best numbers to date under the leadership of Program Director Rob Miller, who arrived in 2006, from Clear Channel sister AC WALK in Long Island. Miller was not seen by many as the ideal choice having come from an Adult radio format but Miller was on a mission to succeed. He accepted the challenge of re-energizing, re-building and re-branding a station that New Yorkers had once so passionately embraced. The KTU call letters have great history and heritage in the Big Apple, from 1975 to 1985, "Disco 92" (WKTU) enjoyed tremendous success going from "worst to first" in the ratings just as it did when the call letters resurfaced more than a decade later in 1996. WKTU is and will always be best defined as New York’s "Feel Good" station but like most things in life, times change, but The Beat goes on! KTU had enjoyed an incredible run in ratings and revenue before the numbers began to decline. What’s your theory on why a station that so many people seemed so passionate about began to struggle for a period of time?KTU really did have a great run in the ratings under Frankie Blue’s leadership through the end of the 90’s and the station became one of the top billers in our cluster. It had such a huge ratings story...shooting to #1 for the first two books in 1996 and many times that kind of success for a new station is hard to sustain once it’s no longer the “shiny new toy.” Plus, there were two major changes in the competitive landscape when two guys named Tom Poleman and Jim Ryan came to the market to program Z100 and WLTW. They both significantly improved the sound of those two stations and made them major players in the market again. Around 2003 was where KTU really started to lose focus and its direction, chasing the younger end listeners that were into current Dance music and were club hoppers. It is such a niche group of people and even though that audience is passionate, there are not enough of them to garner enough ratings to be a market leading station. Plus, the music they like is polarizing to many of the ordinary listeners that aren’t going to the club several nights a week. KTU became too hip for the room and the room started to empty out. www.fmqb.com/article.asp?id=2304811

But wasn't 2003 the year when they were doing more recurrents than new music? If you look at the "WKTU Top 103 of 2003" on the first page here, they were lots of older music from previous years than currents at that time that made the countdown. Something isn't adding up. Its like trying to blame the new cutting edge dance music for the station decline but if you look at the forums and boards around 2003, 2005, etc. KTU listeners complained about KTU not playing enough currents.

Hmm..something's not adding up.. :(

I thought that whole "no repeat workday" thing really began to kill them. The Disco, Freestyle, and Hi Nrg music that they played alongside the current and recurrent Dance/Club music did feel a bit out of place, but in a way, that music was sort of a 'part' of the station and NY history and culture.

Yeah, 2003 is too late. After mid-2003, the dance adds were fewer and fewer. I'd have to go back in this thread and look at the year end lists again to refresh my memory, but I can definitely say that the dance hits that were big started to be the only dance hits they played, eg, "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven," "Never," "I Don't Want U," "Alone"...and they played those a million times a day for MONTHS and MONTHS. There were a few new ones they picked up that late summer and fall...I remember Jason Nevins' "Heaven" Milky's "Just The Way You Are" that were around..but I'm pretty sure that was it.
KTU's end of year countdowns were kind of wacky too. Did they play "All Nite (Don't Stop)" in 2004? Yea. But it being at #44 means they probably played it for a grand total of a month in low rotation.
2002 was probably the last time there was any freshness to the station....anything after that, the big dance songs were big and spun forever and ever. It definitely started to end with the "no-repeat workday" in 2005, but the nail in the coffin came on July 4, 2006, and virtually no new dance was on at all. "Love Generation" was the #1 on the nightly countdown for weeks upon weeks...people loved it... and on the July 4th holiday they played tons of great dance music and mixes all day. The day after that holiday the whole station got a new sound, new DJs, started calling themselves "feel good", etc. It ended.

I still think KTU is sleeping on a great opportunity right now. To think Dance music is popular, their ratings are awful, and they used to break so many Dance songs from the clubs and Europe to mainstream audiences... now they don't even touch Dance songs in the Top 40 at Pop.
They should be leading on songs like Avicii's "Levels" and David Guetta's "Titanium" right now and should have been playing Swedish House Mafia and Afrojack in high rotation all summer. They should take risks and play big international hits like Nero's "Promises" etc and try to break them in the US. If done correctly, an NYC station could definitely pull stuff like this off.
It's so weird, New York is considered the world's leading global city but our radio stations (except the hip hop ones) sound like they could be straight out of small town USA. They're not the fresh radio stations that break new songs to the whole world like other global cities have. It's sad.
