What type of dance music isn't EDM? Any dance music made without using electronic instruments. Part of the confusion is that "EDM" as a term didn't really come around until more recently. So, some "dance" songs that might now fall under "EDM" weren't called that, say, 20 years ago. So for people who have been following music for a few decades now, EDM is really more of a new term and also something that fits newer dance music. To younger people who have known EDM since they began following music, it's just a normal term for dance music. Is there current dance music that wouldn't fall under EDM? Is every song you can dance to classified as "dance music"? Say, Single Ladies or Thinking out Loud? I remember there being a discussion here about 2 weeks ago whether Cheap Thrills classified as dance music or not.

For my money music has become way too genre-fied, and the questions you are asking are a prime example. Very few songs are strictly one type of music, for one, and more so there are so many different genres now. I do think "dance" music generally refers more to 'club' type dancing than the type of dancing you'd do to "Thinking Out Loud," though.

I should be able to post the AI update in a few hours (like 1 or 2 PM EST)

Predictions: Rank | Song | Sales | Airplay | Streams | Points | 1 | Cheap Thrills | 60 | 155 | 13.5 | 33,400 | 2 | Cold Water | 70 | 65 | 20.0 | 31,000 | 3 | This is What You Came For | 35 | 135 | 15.0 | 29,900 | 4 | One Dance | 35 | 130 | 15.0 | 29,400 | 5 | Heathens | 100 | 20 | 18.0 | 28,100 | 6 | Ride | 45 | 125 | 12.0 | 27,500 | 7/8 | Can't Stop The Feeling | 60 | 125 | 9.5 | 27,000 | 7/8 | Closer | 85 | 30 | 17.5 | 27,000 | 9 | Don't Let Me Down | 35 | 105 | 14.0 | 26,000 | 10 | Needed Me | 30 | 85 | 15.5 | 24,800 | 11 | Send My Love | 40 | 110 | 9.0 | 23,000 | 12/13 | Let Me Love You | 115 | 5 | 8.0 | 20,000 | 12/13 | Into You | 55 | 55 | 10.0 | 20,000 |
* Cheap Thrills should comfortably remain #1. * Cold Water should climb back to #2 while Heathens is also looking to crack Top-5. * Let Me Love You will debut at #12 or #13. This would mean 3 artists double up in the top 10 at once (Rihanna, twenty one pilots, The Chainsmokers)...not that common, is it?

^ I think Cold Water is gonna be #1 on the 9/3 or 9/10 chart, stay there for a couple weeks, then get passed by Closer I think we could see a 3-way fight for #1 next week! Cheap Thrills - 55-155-12.5 = 32,000 Cold Water - 65-75-20.5 = 31,800 Closer - 100-40-20.0 = 31,800 Interesting!!! If this is indeed next week's top 3 (in any order) it would be my personal strongest top 3 in quite some time. I feel like we've had a bunch of good late summer songs show up.

This tracking week started with the Friday the movie came out, so it makes sense that the song would do considerably better this week over last week.

There are cultural associations with terms like "techno" and "dance" music that makes them unmarketable in a pop setting. Calling a dance song "EDM" makes it more marketable.

If Send My Love re-enters the top ten and peaks at #8 it'll join the Chandelier/Boom Clap/Cake By The Ocean 12-8 club (songs that bounced around in that range for months).

I'm kinda hoping but cringing that Thomas Rhett's Vacation made the cut this week.
It was bubbling under right next to You Look Like I Need a Drink.

Nice to see Heathens rise so high. If the reaction to SS hadn't die off after the first week, I think if could've had a shot @ #1. Either way peaking inside the top 5 is great, and well deserved.
Happy to see Sia remain #1 for a month straight. If this is to be her last week at #1 she can be very proud of what her single achieved.

Could Into You sneak in to the top 10 eventually? Rooting for Closer as well It's definitely looking like it could, as it's making consistent gains each week in all metrics. It would deserve it too, as I think it's probably her best single yet. As songs are still staying at number one for a very long time, I have a feeling that neither Cold Water or Closer will take over, and that it will be something else a little further down the line, but I hope I'm wrong, because it would be nice for things to keep shaking up. Really surprised to learn that rock and alternative acts are so rarely in the top ten with 2 songs. I wonder if Maroon 5 were to be classified as rock, if they've ever achieved the feat?
