Someone on the TV Tropes forum thread for the Billboard Hot 100 brought up an interesting question that I thought I would share with you guys:
Given that it lasted only 45 seconds, is PPAP the shortest song to have ever hit the Hot 100?
The person who brought up that question decided to do some research on this and found out that the shortest song to ever hit the Hot 100 before PPAP was The Womenfolk's cover of "Little Boxes", which is 1 minute and 3 seconds and peaked at #83 back in 1964. Given this, does that mean the song broke a 52-year record?

Why don't people post the Billboard articles any more? There's lots of info there this week again The Chainsmokers Lead Hot 100, Bruno Mars Debuts at No. 5, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj Hit Top 1010/17/2016 by Gary Trust The Chainsmokers photographed on Aug. 30, 2016 at the Avalon Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. "Closer" reigns for a ninth week, "24K Magic" marks Mars' highest debut and Grande & Minaj's "Side to Side" pedals 12-10. The Chainsmokers continue to top the Billboard Hot 100 (dated Oct. 29), as "Closer," featuring Halsey, leads for a ninth week. Meanwhile, Bruno Mars' "24K Magic" debuts at No. 5 and Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj's "Side to Side" rises 12-10. As we do every Monday when the chart is compiled, let's run down the top 10 of the Hot 100, which blends sales, airplay and streaming data. Highlights of the Hot 100 post on Billboard.com each Monday, with all charts updated each Tuesday. "Closer," released on Disruptor/Columbia Records, and the first Hot 100 No. 1 for both The Chainsmokers (Drew Taggart and Alex Pall) and Halsey, remains the top-selling, most-streamed and most-heard song on radio in the U.S. It leads the Digital Song Sales chart (111,000 downloads sold, down 10 percent in the week ending Oct. 13, according to Nielsen Music) and the Streaming Songs chart (33.2 million U.S. streams, down 6 percent) for a ninth week each. It also tops the audio subscription services-based On-Demand Songs streaming survey for a 10th week (17.5 million on-demand clicks, down 9 percent), and the Radio Songs ranking for a third frame (148 million in airplay audience, up 4 percent, in the week ending Oct. 16). "Closer" commands the Hot 100 and all three of the Hot 100's main component charts (Digital Song Sales, Streaming Songs and Radio Songs), as well as On-Demand Songs, simultaneously for a third week, extending the longest such sweep since Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk!," featuring Mars, led all the rankings at the same time for eight weeks in February-April 2015. Meanwhile, with its ninth week at No. 1 on the Hot 100, "Closer" ties OutKast's "Hey Ya!" (2003-04) for the second-longest reign ever among duos; with 14 weeks on top in 1996, only Los Del Rio's "Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix)" has led longer. (The stat excludes pairings of singers who don't normally record together, such as Brandy and Monica, whose "The Boy Is Mine" ruled for 13 weeks in 1998, or Diana Ross and Lionel Richie, who spent nine weeks at No. 1 in 1981 with "Endless Love.") "Closer" additionally tops Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart for a ninth week. The Weeknd's "Starboy," featuring Daft Punk, holds at its No. 2 high on the Hot 100. It keeps at No. 2 on Streaming Songs (25.6 million, down 5 percent), dips 2-3 on Digital Song Sales (86,000, down 7 percent) and pushes 8-7 on Radio Songs (101 million, up 17 percent). "Starboy" additionally tops the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for a third week. The song is the lead single from The Weeknd's album of the same name due Nov. 25. Twenty One Pilots' "Heathens" is steady at No. 3 on the Hot 100 after logging four weeks at its No. 2 peak. It holds at No. 2 on Radio Songs (127 million, up 6 percent) and retreats 3-4 on Digital Song Sales (although up 8 percent to 79,000) and 4-5 on Streaming Songs (16.5 million, down 13 percent). It tallies a 10th week at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Rock Songs chart. DJ Snake's "Let Me Love You," featuring Justin Bieber, rebounds from No. 5 to its No. 4 Hot 100 high. The collab reaches the Radio Songs top five (7-5; 106 million, up 13 percent), slips 6-7 on Streaming Songs (14.3 million, down 2 percent) and jumps 9-5 on Digital Song Sales (62,000; up 49 percent). Mars' "24K Magic" launches at No. 5 on the Hot 100, as it begins at No. 2 on Digital Song Sales (101,000 first-week downloads sold) and No. 9 on Streaming Songs (12.8 million) and vaults 36-15 on Radio Songs (65 million) following its first full week of airplay tracking. (It should benefit on next week's charts following Mars' performance of it on NBC's Saturday Night Live Oct. 15.) "Magic," Mars' 13th Hot 100 Top 10, was released Oct. 7 on digital and streaming services, and is the title track from the pop star's third full-length, due Nov. 18. Notably, the lead singles from Mars' first two studio sets both hit No. 1 on the Hot 100: "Just the Way You Are," from Doo-Wops & Hooligans, for four weeks in 2010, and "Locked Out of Heaven," from Unorthodox Jukebox, for six weeks in 2012-13. (The songs debuted at Nos. 43 and 34, respectively.) "Magic" additionally marks Mars' highest Hot 100 debut. Of his 19 entries so far (dating to his 2010 arrival), he had previously bowed as high as No. 10, as a featured act on Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa's "Young, Wild & Free" (Oct. 29, 2011). As a lead artist, he had debuted at a No. 28 high with "It Will Rain" (Oct. 15, 2011). "Magic" is the fourth song to blast onto the Hot 100 in the top five in 2016, following No. 1 entrances for Zayn's "Pillowtalk" (Feb. 20) and Justin Timberlake's "Can't Stop the Feeling!" (May 28); Major Lazer's "Cold Water," featuring Bieber and MO, opened at No. 2 (Aug. 13). Below the Hot 100's top five, D.R.A.M.'s first top 10, "Broccoli," featuring Lil Yachty, keeps at its No. 6 peak, while topping Hot Rap Songs for a sixth week; "Cold Water" falls 4-7 after reaching No. 2; Shawn Mendes' "Treat You Better" slides 7-8 after hitting No. 6; and Sia's former four-week Hot 100 No. 1 "Cheap Thrills," featuring Sean Paul, drops 8-9. Rounding out the Hot 100's top 10, Grande's "Side to Side," featuring Minaj, rises 12-10. It backtracks 7-8 on Streaming Songs, but gains by 6 percent to 14 million, surges 17-10 on Digital Song Sales (37,000, up 29 percent) and lifts 37-31 on Radio Songs (43 million, up 24 percent). (Adding to the song's exposure: its synch in a new T-Mobile ad.) Grande earns her eighth Hot 100 top 10, and second from her album Dangerous Woman, following the No. 8-peaking title track lead single. (In between the two songs, the set's second single, "Into You," reached No. 13.) Minaj scores her 13th Hot 100 top 10, extending her record for the most top 10s among female rappers; Missy Elliott ranks second with nine. "Side to Side" also marks Grande and Minaj's second top 10 side-by-side: they previously teamed for the No. 3-peaking "Bang Bang," with Jessie J, in 2014. Beyond the Hot 100's top 10, in addition to Mars' "Magic," other Hot 100 debuts on the chart include John Legend's "Love Me Now" (No. 55), Maroon 5's "Don't Wanna Know," featuring Kendrick Lamar (No. 56), and Lady Gaga's "Million Reasons" (No. 76). Find out more Hot 100 news in the weekly "Hot 100 Chart Moves" column later this week, and visit Billboard.com tomorrow (Oct. 18), when all rankings, including the Hot 100 in its entirety, will refresh. The Hot 100 and other charts will also appear in the next issue of Billboard magazine, on sale Friday (Oct. 21). www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/7542130/the-chainsmokers-hot-100-closer-bruno-mars

False Alarm is gone from Hot 100 this week... Probably wasn't a good idea to push it as a single at the same time as Starboy. Too bad, I liked False Alarm more. Maybe it will return next week thanks to video.

The shortest #1 ever was Stay by Maurice Williams and that was around 1:50 or so.

Wasn't Harlem Shake like 30 seconds only? Or at least the 30-second version accounted for like 99% of its points so as far as I'm concerned that was the shortest.

The Harlem Shake single was longer the original version, maybe, but not the version that got it to #1 and accounted for 99% of its points.

Well, not sure about the 99% thing but the version that created the chart entry was the one longer than 30 seconds. Where it charted and why it charted where it did is a completely separate question.

Chart Watch: Bruno Works a Little ‘24K Magic’ to Debut in the Top 5
Paul Grein Writer October 18, 2016
Bruno Mars’s “24K Magic” blasts onto the Hot 100 at #5. It’s the highest-debuting hit of Mars’s hit-studded career. Only three other singles have debuted in the top five so far this year. Zayn’s “Pillowtalk” and Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” both opened at #1. Major Lazer’s “Cold Water” (featuring Justin Bieber and MØ) bowed at #2.
“24K Magic” (pronounced “24-karat magic”) sold 101K copies in its first week, which enables it to enter Top Digital Songs at #2, just 10K behind the Chainsmokers’ monster hit “Closer” (featuring Halsey). “24K Magic” is the title track from Mars’s upcoming third studio album, which is due Nov. 18. Stevie Nicks had a song with a similar title, “24 Karat Gold,” from her 2014 album 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault. “24K Magic” is Mars’s 13th top 10 hit; his eighth as a lead artist.
Deep trivia: B.o.B, with whom Mars first cracked the Hot 100 with the chart-topping “Nothin’ on You,” also reached the top 10 with a “Magic” song. His “Magic,” which featured Rivers Cuomo, reached #10 in 2010.
Top Songs The Chainsmokers’ “Closer” (featuring Halsey) tops the Hot 100 for the ninth straight week. That’s the longest run at #1 by a duo since Outkast’s “Hey Ya!” spent nine weeks on top in 2003-’04. “Closer” also heads
Top Digital Songs for the 10th week (with sales of 111K this week). That puts it in a tie with Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” for most weeks at #1 on the digital sales chart so far this year.
The Weeknd’s “Starboy” (featuring Daft Punk) holds at #2 in its fourth week. The song holds at #1 on Billboard‘s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for the third week. As with Mars’s song, this is a title track — a sign of the confidence that the artists had that these songs would be big hits. The Weeknd’s Starboy album is due Nov. 25. twenty one pilots’ “Heathens” holds at #3 in its 17th week.
DJ Snake’s “Let Me Love You” (featuring Justin Bieber) inches up from #5 to #4 in its 10th week. DJ Snake has reached #4 with three hits, but has yet to climb higher. Will he do so in weeks to come? Stay tuned.
D.R.A.M.’s “Broccoli” (featuring Lil Yachty) holds at #6 in its 18th week.
Major Lazer’s “Cold Water” (which featuring Justin Bieber and MØ) drops from #4 to #7 its 12th week.
Shawn Mendes’s “Treat You Better” dips from #7 to #8 in its 19th week.
Sia’s “Cheap Thrills” (featuring Sean Paul) dips from #8 to #9 in its 35th week.
Ariana Grande’s “Side to Side” (featuring Nicki Minaj) jumps from #12 to #10 in its seventh week. It’s Grande’s eighth top 10 hit; Minaj’s 13th. It’s the second top 10 hit on which the two stars have collaborated, following “Bang Bang” (which also credited Jessie J). That smash reached #3 two years ago.
Grande and Minaj are the third pair of female solo stars who have collaborated on two top 10 hits. The first two pairs were Gwen Stefani and Eve (“Let Me Blow Ya Mind” in 2001 and “Rich Girl” in 2005) and Ciara and Missy Elliott (“1,2 Step” and “Lose Control,” both in 2005). You’ll note all three of these pairs include a hip-hop artist. That’s not surprising, since many pop records these days feature a hip-hopper to give them extra edge and urban appeal.
“Side to Side” is the second top 10 hit from Grande’s third album, Dangerous Woman. Her sophomore album, My Everything, spawned three top 10 hits. (The deluxe edition of My Everything contained a fourth, “Bang Bang.”)
Two songs drop out of the top 10 this week. The Chainsmokers’ previous hit, “Don’t Let Me Down” (featuring Daya) drops from #9 to #13. Gnash’s “I Hate U I Love U” (featuring Olivia O’Brien) drops from #10 to #12. (I expect it to return to the top 10.)
Kenny Chesney’s “Setting the World on Fire” (featuring P!nk) drops from #34 to #36 in its 11th week. The song peaked at #29. In addition, the song reached #1 on Hot Country Songs last week. It’s unusual, but not unheard of, for pop or rock artists to reach #1 on the country chart via collaborations with top country stars. Kelly Clarkson collaborated with Jason Aldean on “Don’t You Wanna Stay” in 2011. Bon Jovi teamed with Jennifer Nettles (of Sugarland fame) on “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” in 2006. Sheena Easton collaborated with Kenny Rogers on a cover of Bob Seger’s “We’ve Got Tonight” in 1983. Jimmy Buffett and Paul Davis, best known for their late ’70s pop hits “Margaritaville” and “I Go Crazy,” each later collaborated on two #1 country hits.
Country legend Willie Nelson has partnered with non-country artists on three #1 country hits. He teamed with ’70s rock star Leon Russell on a remake of Elvis’ “Heartbreak Hotel” in 1979, Latin heartthrob Julio Iglesias on “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before” in 1984 and pop/R&B legend Ray Charles on “Seven Spanish Angels” in 1985. Trailing the Bruno Mars single as the week’s top new entries are John Legend’s “Love Me Now” at #55, Maroon 5’s “Don’t Wanna Know” (featuring Kendrick Lamar) at #56, and Lady Gaga’s “Million Reasons” at #76. “Don’t Wanna Know” an important single for Maroon 5. The group’s last single, ‘This Summer’s Gonna Hurt…,” peaked at #23, breaking a string of eight consecutive top 10 hits.
Top Albums
Green Day land their third #1 album as Revolution Radio enters the Billboard 200 in the top spot. The band previously topped the chart with back-to-back studio albums — 2004’s American Idiot and 2009’s 21st Century Breakdown.
Revolution Radio also enters the Official U.K. Albums Chart at #1. American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown also topped the U.K. chart. Green Day is one of only three American bands to land three transatlantic #1 albums. They follow Metallica and Linkin Park.
Trivia note: Revolution Radio is the third #1 album with the word “radio” in its title. It follows Donna Summer’s On the Radio – Greatest Hits – Volumes I & II (1980) and Kenny Chesney’s The Road and the Radio (2005).
This is Green Day’s 10th top 10 album. The trio first cracked the top 10 in August 1994 with Dookie.
Norah Jones’s Day Breaks debuts at #2. It’s her sixth consecutive top five album.
OneRepublic land their highest-charting album to date as Oh My My debuts at #3. The group’s previous album, Native, reached #4 in 2013. (Ringo Starr had a top five single in 1974 with a song titled “Oh My My.”)
Drake’s Views dips from #3 to #4 in its 24th week. It’s the first album to spend its first 24 weeks in the top five since Taylor Swift’s 1989 in 2014-15.
The Suicide Squad soundtrack dips from #4 to #5 in its 10th week. It’s #1 on Top Soundtracks for the 10th week.
Solange’s A Seat at the Table drops from #1 to #6 in its second week.
twenty one pilots’ Blurryface inches up from #8 to #7 in its 74th week. The album debuted at #1 in May 2015.
Alter Bridge land their second top 10 album as The Last Hero debuts at #8. This is the first top 10 album for the hard rock band since its debut, One Day Remains, reached #5 in 2004.
Phantogram score teur first top 10 album as their third full-length release, Three, debuts at #9. The male/female duo previously climbed as high as #11 with their sophomore album, Voices, in 2014.
Ariana Grande’s Dangerous Woman drops from #7 to #10 in its 21st week. The album debuted and peaked at #2 in May.
Five albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Bon Iver’s 22, A Million drops from #2 to #23. The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ The Getaway drops from #5 to #20. Shawn Mendes’s Illuminate drops from #6 to #14. Van
Morrison’s Keep Me Singing plummets from #9 to #58. Travis Scott’s Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight dips from #10 to #12.
Look for Kings of Leon’s Walls to debut at #1 next week. Also look for solid debuts by JoJo’s Mad Love, The Game’s 1992, and Kidz Bop 33.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/7549143/piko-taro-ppap-shortest-song-billboard-hot-100Piko-Taro's 'PPAP' Is the Shortest Song Ever on Billboard Hot 100The 45-second-long novelty song rewrites history with its No. 77 entrance on the chart. He has a pen. He has an apple. Now he has a Billboard Hot 100 record too. As Piko-Taro debuts on the Hot 100 (dated Oct. 29) at No. 77 with his novelty viral hit "PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen)," the track makes history as the shortest song -- a mere 45 seconds in length -- ever to reach the chart. According to Paul Haney of Record Research (which has released more than 150 chart reference books by its founder, historian Joel Whitburn), the song bests the mark held for more than 52 years by The Womenfolk's "Little Boxes," which peaked at No. 83 on the Hot 100 in 1964 and is one minute and two seconds long. Justin Bieber arrives at The 58th Grammy Awards at Staples Center on Feb. 15, 2016 in Los Angeles. READ MORE Justin Bieber Shares His 'Favorite Video on the Internet': Piko Taro's Viral 'PPAP' Clip Piko-Taro -- sprung from the imagination of Japanese comedian and DJ Daimaou Kosaka -- makes his record-setting Hot 100 arrival with his viral hit, which starts almost exclusively from 5.7 million U.S. streams (nearly all from YouTube clicks) in the week ending Oct. 13, according to Nielsen Music. It also enters the Streaming Songs chart at No. 46. "PPAP" has already received a major endorsement from Justin Bieber, who, on Sept. 27, tweeted that the track was his "favorite video in the internet" and linked to the clip. The tweet has received 65,000 retweets and 120,000 likes.
