The year was 1987. Keith Sweat released his triple-platinum debut, Bobby Brown was on the verge of a major solo breakthrough, A Different World premiered on NBC, Spike Lee was gearing up to release the classic School Daze, and Guy was about to introduce us to a guy known as Teddy Riley. The soul music of the 70's was about to produce a love child with the hip-hop sounds that became increasingly prevalent in the 80's. We call it New Jack Swing, the merging of genres that gave way to the urban music younger generations are familiar with today. Join me as I count down Jazzy's Top 100 New Jack Tracks. While some songs are undeniably New Jack, you may ask yourself "Is this slow jam really New Jack? Can it be New Jack if it came out after 1993?" Jazzy's definition and selections by no means have to be yours (this list is based on my most played tracks on last.fm that are on my New Jack playlist), but I hope you'll join me while we relive this revolutionary era.

#100. Bobby Brown - "Rock Wit'cha"
Leading this off with a track from one of the premiere, quintessential new jack swing albums, Don't Be Cruel. This is one of those songs that may be on the slower side compared to what people think about when they hear the term "new jack swing," but Don't Be Cruel epitomizes the genre, making every track on it worthy of the tag. Produced by Babyface, who will appear numerous times on this last (both as a lead act and producer).
#3 Billboard R&B in 1989
...and the superior album version:

#99. Karyn White - "Secret Rendezvous"
Another Babyface produced tune. This one, from Karyn White's self-titled debut, was produced alongside frequent collaborator L.A. Reid and Daryl Simmons.

#98. The Boys - "Dial My Heart"
"The next Jackson 5"? Maybe not, but they did top the R&B chart with this one (their first of 3 R&B chart-toppers). This one was also produced by Babyface, L.A. Reid, and Daryl Simmons.

#97. Mary J. Blige - "You Don't Have To Worry"
The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul.. maybe just another name for New Jack Swing. This was produced by Kenny Greene, of the 90's R&B group Intro, who would become a popular R&B producer in the mid-90's.
#11 R&B in early 1994, as the New Jack Swing era was winding down

#96. Guy featuring Heavy D - "Do Me Right"
From Guy's sophomore album. Produced by, of course, group member Teddy Riley (the reigning KING of the genre).

#95. Jodeci - "Gotta Love"
The single that started it all for Jodeci, from their multi-platinum classic Forever My Lady. This one didn't do much on the charts, but it launched the career of one of the top acts of the genre.
#79 R&B in 1991
...and the album version, which I much prefer:

#94. The Mac Band - "Roses Are Red"
This was the one significant hit produced by this group (their only Top 20 R&B hit). Produced by Babyface and L.A. Reid.

#93. Surface - "I Missed"

#91. Johnny Gill - "Fairweather Friend"
This was part of a streak of 4 hits from Johnny Gill's self-titled 1990 album and the only one to miss the top of the R&B chart. Another Babyface, L.A. Reid, and Daryl Simmons production.

#90. The O'Jays - "Don't Let Me Down"
This became one of the The O'Jays' final hit singles, from their Emotionally Yours album which spawned multiple Top 5 R&B hits. This was the biggest of the hits from that album and demonstrated The O'Jays' had what it took to hang with the younger groups.

#89. Chanté Moore - "Who Do I Turn To"
This single from Chanté Moore's debut album didn't do much upon its original release but showed she could handle an uptempo just as well as a slow jam. Despite not originally being a hit, it's apparently become a college marching band favorite in the South..

#84. Jane Child - "Don't Wanna Fall In Love (7" Remix Version)"
Jane Child topped the pop charts with the original version of this track in the spring of 1990, but it was a remix by Teddy Riley that would turn it into a Top 10 R&B hit a couple months later. This would be Jane's only entry on the R&B chart.
