Coming from the perspective of a huge Lorde fan, I was unsure whether she could pull of another hit. It looks like she just might do it. Let's go Lorde! I'm proud of how she came back in a more poppy-vein than Pure Heroine, but still kept her integrity. Something Katy Perry tried to do but failed.

do only the most played/requested songs by any given artist from any given album make it into the annual hot/top 100 billboard singles??? lets say that lady gaga had only like 4 or 5 most played/requested singles for 2008 from that one particular album, would only these songs make it into the billboard hot/top 100 singles for 2008/2009 or not? if lady gaga or for that matter any given artist like madonna, foster the people, taylor swift, rihanna, the foo fighters, greenday, ect..... had only certain songs that were the most played/requested songs played across radio stations in the united states, would only these songs make it into the billboard hot/top 100 or would it be all of their songs from any given album that they released vs. only certain songs? what would be the difference between the billboard hot/top 100 singles for any given year by any given artist from any given album vs. the most played/ requested songs by any given artist from any given album across radio stations in america/united states????? can a billboard/chart lover please tell me. can a chart guru or popular music geek/buff please help me out on this one?????? rsvp. thank you.

The Billboard Hot 100 is a chart based on statistic from three different metrics. The first one is airplay.
Airplay is measured by estimated number of listeners a song obtained in a week. For example, the current number one song in airplay is Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" with 211.404 million AI. This number means "Shape of You" was heard an estimated 211,404,000 times on the radio in the United States. Note that this is not how many people listened to it, but how many times it was heard. The same person can hear the same song multiple times on the radio, and this number accounts for that. Number of requests are not a factor for the Hot 100.
Sales is next. Sales is divided into two metrics: digital and physical. Physical sales are nearly non-existent these days because it's a big waste of money for a label to release physical singles since hardly anyone buys them, but the few that do get a few extra small points that hardly amount to much. Digital sales, however, are much stronger. This is the number of times a song was purchased on digital retailers such as Amazon MP3 and iTunes.
Streaming is the final metric. Streaming is also divided into two metrics: on-demand and passive streaming. On-Demand streaming are sites that let the users pick an audio file to listen to as they wish, such as Spotify, Tidal, and Apple Music. These streams are weighted more than passive streams, meaning one stream from an on-demand service is worth more points than one stream from a passive service. A passive service is a streaming site that lets users listen to either radio stations or lets them watch music videos, such as Pandora and YouTube.
These three metrics combine in a formula to give songs points every week. Any song is eligible no matter if it is a single or not. Any song. It can be receiving airplay or not, it can be on Spotify or not, it can be available on iTunes or not. Any song can make the chart. There are no restrictions.
Every year, Billboard totals up the points for every song from each week and releases a top 100 for the year that is simply just the total number of points a song received while charting on the Hot 100 during the year.

If Closer hung on for another week in the top 10, Chainsmokers will become the first to triple down in the top 10 since Bieber in early 2016 I think.

Love seeing Coldplay in the top 10. For some reason radio doesn't play Coldplay a lot. Adventure of a Lifetime and Hymn for the Weekend were both great songs though didn't catch on at radio.

Tunnel Vision will be the next #1.
Again, a viral streaming song comes out of nowhere, becomes the next #1 and blocks songs that are struggling for a long time to get there. It just keeps happening.
