Ok people. Stop misusing what yearend charts represent. Your continued ignorance of it is frustrating. Learn or stop.

How the subject of year end lists because controversial here is beyond me It's because some people try to use YE charts as a barometer for what is or isn't a hit (to suit whatever narrative they want to spin). The problem is that YE lists lack context in regards to what was actually happening from week-to-week on any given song. That's why there's contention over whether songs like 'Piece By Piece' or 'Gimme More' or 'Stupid Girls' (or any other songs being thrown around in this discussion) are hits or not. Sometimes things are only big for a short time, and don't have the shelf-life to do well on a YE list, but that doesn't make them any less of a hit. The degree to which X, Y or Z is a hit is a separate matter - this is where context is important, and YE lists can't provide that.

To those people who do predictions and work with the chart formula - can someone please calculate what position I Don't Wanna Live Forever would be in if it didn't have Spotify? :) Radio, YouTube, and the Fifty Shades movie/soundtrack would of gotten it to #2 without Spotify.

YE positions at least take longevity into account. There are plenty of songs that have a high peak but didn't feel like hits, and then there are songs with low peaks that hung around awhile and had real impact. At the end of the day, though, charts in and of themselves - weekly, yearly, even decade - aren't perfect measures. I think we all recognize that, so the issue is more than it seems like everything here has to become a dang argument. Few if any people here are morons. We all know the charts are just something fun to watch but aren't perfect. We also all know we're just stating opinions here, not fact. Why people keep feeling a need to act like we don't all know that, I am unsure.

There are a large amount of songs that are huge well known classics that never even made the Hot 100. So year end charts just as any weekly charts don't always represent what was huge hit at anytime of any year. Example : Stairway to heaven by Led Zeppelin. I know this is dating me but it's an example.

and there are some that became classics later that had a low peak initial chart run
There are others that really sound out of place today that were huge hits when released
Definition of "classic" has nothing to do with the initial chart run.
The definition of a "hit" depends on how you want to define it but, on a weekly chart, we should only be talking about what a 'hit' is in a 7 day period.

OK you want a hit song that was huge what about Don't Speak or Iris or other songs not able to chart in the 90s because of billboard rules. You can't disqualify these songs. So Stupid girls only got to 13. I would say that was a big hit. Even her period hit Try made the Hot 100. Many songs released don't so what makes someone a flop? Not every song can go top ten or number one .

Another song could have the exact same chart run in the middle of one year, same stats all around and make #45 for the year. This situation is why YE aren't usually a great reference. Now if we had a rolling YE chart...

I would prefer an all time chart. Like a top 1000 .

I'm just very confused as to the intended purpose and direction of whatever you're trying to say, and am asking for a clarification. the clarification is the original post was how Pinks stupid girls was a flop yet made the year end charts. How is that a flop? Nobody clarified that. So basically if a song doesn't make the year end or weekly chart it must be a flop. This is why I brought up other songs that were big hits. That's my clarification. Comprende

Which just further proves the point that looking at strictly one number, whether is be the year end list or the weekly peak, means nothing in the grand scheme of a song's run.

Will "Green Light" be debuting on the 3/18/17 chart? It came out on Thursday, so it's technically eligble. I'm just curious to know where it will be debuting.

I'll be very happy to see "Down" in the top 20! But it's a shame that It Ain't Me will probably drop out of it.

Coming from the perspective of a huge Lorde fan, I was unsure whether she could pull of another hit. It looks like she just might do it. Let's go Lorde!
