I'm glad to have helped prevent it from finishing lower then :) It escaped bottom five by one point! And you were the last submission so...yeah, you actually did prevent it from finishing lower lol And bumped SYA into the bottom five. Thank you, Leaf :kii:

A bit surprised that BBP was just as low as my personal ranking. Honestly I thought I was gonna rank it 35 but I guess I gave it bonus points for originality and Fergie :) CITW was my #20 and thought it was gonna be much lower here. It's a good song. The original song already was. And this new version felt just as such an event and a heartfelt performance...

Didja know? - People love trying to snatch Ashanti's sideburns now, but truth be told most of us could only wish for our up-and-coming faves to have a career pop off as big as hers. Foolish was Ashanti's debut single and smashed so hard that her self-titled album opened with over 503k. The week the album was released, Ashanti had three songs in the Hot 100 top 10 (Foolish, What's Luv, and Always on Time), tying a Beatles record. As if that wasn't enough dominance for you, she actually had a FOURTH song in the top 10 at the time, as she co-wrote J. Lo's Ain't It Funny (Murder remix). She didn't have an artist credit on that one, but goodness knows her not-so-background vocals deserved it b/c that is all Ashanti on the hook and the outgoing "is that your girlfriend, I got my boyfriend" riff. - Marketing gangstas: Part of the reason her album opened with such huge numbers is that Murder Inc. offered record stores a $2 rebate for every album sold during the first two weeks of release, so her CD was priced lower than others. The publicity surrounding that success more than made up for the rebates. That, in turn, made the industry as a whole re-examine its pricing model at a time when CD prices were going up, but sales were starting to go down. - Originally, Jay-Z was supposed to rhyme on the bridge. Jay was on his way to the studio when Irv called him and said no, scratch that - Irv decided he didn't want to do the typical singer-featuring-rapper thing and wanted Ashanti to stand on her own two feet. - Writing the bridge to Foolish is still one of Ashanti's best memories from recording that album (maybe the reason why Irv said never mind to Jay-Z?). "First of all, I was surrounded by rappers. I was with Irv and those guys, and no one believed that I wrote my records....They used to make me write in front of them, because they were like, "There's no way." So when I wrote the bridge and Irv came back and he heard it, he was screaming, running around the fifth floor of the [recording studio]. Everybody was like, "Oh my God. This is crazy."

Wow. I would've thought this was a lowkey Pulse fave.

Didja know? - Boyz II Men is the only act to have three songs sit atop the Hot 100 for 10 or more weeks. - According to Babyface, this song almost didn't make the II album. The guys seemed to like it but voted it off, then at the last minute elected to include it in the final tracklist. The president of Motown at the time then chose this song as a single despite the group's protests. - Along with Bended Knee, this set a record for most consecutive weeks (26) in the top 2. - Boyz II Men originally called themselves Unique Attraction, an atrociously corny moniker even by '90s r&b group standards. Thankfully, they got discovered backstage by Michael Bivens at a New Edition concert, and later named themselves after the title of a New Edition song.

I'm shocked that "Foolish" is out. Didn't think we'd see that one for a long while. :o

Wow. I would've thought this was a lowkey Pulse fave. I think the issue is that Ashanti herself is a lowkey fave among some posters at least, but the burn rate on this particular song is SO high. I'll bump Ashanti's debut album relentlessly but to this day I still cannot listen to Foolish all the way through because it got so overplayed during its time. (There's another song I have the same feelings about, but that other song placed very well in the rankdown). Ashanti is right though - that bridge is flawless.

Didja know? - I Swear was originally a John Michael Montgomery song. A success on the country charts, the label considered having Montgomery record a pop version. However, they didn't want to upset country fans, so they decided to have their new r&b vocal group All-4-One record the pop version for their debut album instead. - All-4-One was playing gigs at Disneyland the week this song went #1.

I'm surprised my ranking of Ashanti is in the upper half of the ranks. This is Pulse here, where R&B ladies are ranked above all! Nonetheless, I wasn't huge on Foolish at the time. I think I was over the Murder Inc-related music just as soon as it had taken off and Foolish was in direct competition with A Thousand Miles, a song more up my alley. But as years passed, I've warmed up to it and, at least compared to the rest of this list, it sits near the middle.
I prefer the other three singles from II over I'll Make Love To You. Also surprised I Swear beat it, even if just slightly.

Didja know? - Robin claimed that Paula encouraged him to do the video with the topless girls. - Blurred Lines holds the record for highest number of radio impressions in a single week (219.8 million). - Err'body pay up: Robin and Pharrell infamously got sued by, and lost to, the Marvin Gaye estate for the similarities between Blurred Lines and Got To Give It Up. I still have issues with the way this outcome was reached, but whatevs. - In one of the weirder douchebag moves I've ever seen, Robin thought his best defense in the Gaye lawsuit was to give all the 'credit' for creating the song to Pharrell (thus extricating himself from the possible plagiarism narrative). He first admitted being jealous that Pharrell wrote the whole song, and wanting some of the credit. Then, when asked if he was around when the rhythm track was being created, he said he was high on Vicodin and alcohol when he was in the studio, so his memory was just that he wanted to be more involved on the track than he really was. "I started kind of convincing myself that I was a little more part of it than I was...but the reality is that Pharrell had the beat and he wrote almost every single part of the song...(I was) lucky enough to be in the room." - Really wanted to find some facts that we didn't already know but pretty much the entire narrative around this song is that Robin Thicke is a drug-addled asshat whose own stupidity caused his sudden superstar status to crash and burn as quickly as it had ascended. Not much else to say. Just don't ever tell an r&b fan that this man is a 1-hit wonder because that is inaccurate! That is all.

I felt at the time that Foolish was massively overplayed, and overplay wasn't something that usually bothered me so much back then. Nowadays, I feel like it has more replay value (in large part because of the flawless bridge ;) ) than a lot of big hits, hence my relatively high ranking. I, too, preferred A Thousand Miles at the time, but now, that's the one that seems massively overplayed to me.

so happy Blurred Lines is out, I absolutely hate this song. Have never liked it. While I'm not crazy about other songs on this list this is honestly the only one I outright cannot stand

Didja know? - Low initially set the record for most digital sales for a song in one week; he later smashed his own record with Right Round. - Low was the most downloaded song of the 2000s decade. - Low (and Flo Rida himself) are apparently not interesting enough for anyone to have some decent trivia other than Low's remarkable sales. He is as unremarkable as his spot on this rankdown.

I knew for a fact that my #1 will land in someone's bottom two.
Not because it's hated or even forgettable per se, but because that one particular person is participating here.

Flo Rida. An uninteresting rapper then, an uninteresting rapper now.
That chorus is untouchable though.

I was so sure BL was going to be one of the first ones out. I think it was bottom 10 early on but later rankings pulled it up or pushed other songs down.

I can no longer be friends with anyone who ranked "Blurred Lines" anything but last (just kidding, but your tastes have been questioned...). I could go on a mile-long rant about how atrocious and degrading that song is. I hate it more than "Country Girl (Shake It For Me)" and "Real Men Love Jesus" combined (which is a LOT). It made it WAY too far... Robin Thicke is a pig and I never want to hear that song again
