1. When she says she keeps all her music memorabilia in storage, and her house is her house, because her career doesn't offer her validation, I had a surge of empathy. I think that's one of the reasons why she auctioned off so much. I also think it's one of the reasons I've always adored her. She's the most sane and grounded person and the only one of the 80's icons to escape with such dignity. In her imperial phase, she'd go away for literally years between album eras and you wouldn't hear a thing, and she'd live her life privately.

2. This format works better for her because she isn't actually being interviewed, she's just telling her life's stories.

3. I'm so glad to hear her acknowledge her career, impact and accolades with such pride.

This past weekend, Tito Jackson passed away unexpectedly at the age of 70.

Praying that Janet and her family are doing their best to be with each other during this very difficult time.

Organizers from the DSTV Festival in Johannesburg confirmed that Janet will no longer be performing this year. No word yet on the Europe leg scheduled to start in a week, hoping it will move forward somehow.

Anyways, in that same interview from The Guardian, she finally gave commentary on what did happened with the Black Diamond album. Basically, Randy got in her way in releasing new music.

From the outside, the last few years have looked a little muddled. Tours have been promised before and have been left unfulfilled. An album – Black Diamond – was announced and then junked. “I feel so badly about that,” she says, sheepishly. There was this stuff I had to clean up in my own back yard, which got cleaned up,” she motions, deliberately vague. “And I have recorded a lot of music,” she laughs. “A lot of music that’s just sitting on the shelf.” Why isn’t she releasing it? “I went to my brother [Randy] … and I think, I think he’s just waiting for the opportune time.”

I’m surprised that Randy, who is four years older than Janet and the youngest Jackson brother, has so much say over her career. They are partners in Rhythm Nation Records, but is he such a big part of her decision-making process? “I think he’s waiting – yeah, of course he’s a big part.” She playfully rolls her eyes. “He’s got a big head,” she says in a teasing sing-song. “A big muscle head.”
