Poor Despacito, it was never a hit we wished it would be.

It actually bothers me quite much how everybody views the records as being Mariah's. The record was never hers, it was shared by her and Boyz 2 Men (who have more 10wk+ number ones than she does) . Now it is shared by luis fonsi, daddy yankee, and justin bieber as well. Stop calling it Mariah's record.

But if you consider that they have more 10wks+ number ones, can we also consider that she has more 8wk+ number ones than they do, or that they got only 4 #1 during the 90's while Mariah got fucking 14 #1 during that same decade? :| IMO she was a more reliable guarantee to get a number 1 than they were - I think it would be more relevant to acknowledge that before discussing the longevity of their number one hits. By the way, wasn't OSD crafted for Mariah's Daydream album? In a way, it makes it more her song than theirs from my pov.

The other #1's are irrelevant.
One Sweet Day is what we are talking about.
Mariah has more #1's overall, more 8+ weeks #1's etc. Irrelevant, so what? We are talking about one song only, not the others.
That does not make One Sweet Day a Mariah song or more of a Mariah song than that other group.
One Sweet Day was co-written by Mariah and Boyz II Men, so they SHARE credit at the writing level too.
However, this is Pulse. Ignore or disregard everything not done by a female pop star - LOL
Mariah NEVER had this record all to herself, HOWEVER, Boyz II Men did.
Boyz II Men held the record until it was broken by Whitney Houston and later tied again by Boyz II Men.
Boyz II Men (w Mariah) breaks the record again

Oh well, they still have to live with the fact that it's sharing the title of longest #1. She's still there and the 1st to do it. That's the point. She and them (Mariah & Boyz II Men).

No one ever heard of Luis Fonsi before because they are not looking in the right spot, he is one the biggest artists on the Latin chart with now 7 #1 hits (In the 2015 Greatest Of All Time lists - he ranked #41, probably much higher now)

"OSD" also didn't get the benefit of chart weeks climbing to #1 because of chart rules at the time. It had top 2 airplay before it ever debuted, so under the late 90s chart rules it would have debuted earlier and added extra weeks to its chart run. Additionally, my understanding is the commercial single was deleted at a certain point, so that also led to its somewhat quick descent. Additionally, its airplay at R&B radio didn't count toward its Hot 100 run; so, again, under current chart rules it would have had even better airplay because of its multi-format success. It might have had more weeks at #1, or at least more weeks on the chart under current rules. In other words, there are a lot of factors. You nailed it. Mariah's record company stopped shipping OSD singles to focus on the 10x platinum album. The song could have been #1 20 weeks probably. All good points - and what also hasn't been mentioned here is that One Sweet Day was release (and was at #1 for multiple weeks) in 1995. So it's chart points were split between two separate chart years, something that none of these other songs has had.

The song could have been #1 20 weeks probably.I wouldn't go that far; it was replaced by "Because You Loved Me," which had strong airplay and sales, too. The point is more that there are always a lot of factors with every song's chart run, and while the speculation can be fun, it's ultimately just that...speculation. At the end of the day, both "One Sweet Day" and "Despacito" were #1 for 16 weeks, and they share the record. I will note that the week "OSD" hit 16 weeks at #1, the Hot 100 column noted its lack of challengers and essentially predicted a 17th week at #1. It then fell to #5 the next week. I'd imagine (so again, speculation) that was due to Sony stopping making the commercial single, and thus sales fell harder than predicted.

^Yeah, so my prediction that Attention would reach #1 in radio audience came true. If Look What You Made Me Do doesn't get much of a correction from today's airplay in tomm, it could end up as high as #5 in Radio Songs next week.

Yes, the dreaded deleted singles - Columbia did that with CLG, which kept it from #1, and then deleted IBT, so that people would have to buy Unplugged. Ironically, all of these deleted singles, airplay only track, etc. to force people to buy albums resulted in Napster, etc. so there's justice in that.

It was an understandable tactic at the time, but in the long run I think all the album filler you had to purchase to get a single song helped kill sales as well.

Mariah has a whole history of deleted and/or limited singles. You can add "Fantasy," "Heartbreaker" and "Thank God I Found You" to the ones we've already named. I wonder how many more weeks at #1 she would have otherwise (but then her album sales may not have been as strong).

"One Sweet Day", which by the way is a really dragging record, was released as the second single from Mariah Carey´s fifth album and it was not on Boyz 2 Men´s album, so that´s why it´s considered more as Mariah´s song than Boyz 2 Men´s one. But I really skip this song on radio or album as I do "Despacito".

It honestly doesn't matter. It's Mariah's record. It's Boyz II Men's record. It's Luis Fonsi's record. Daddy Yankee's record. Justin Bieber's record. Or both belongs to them collectively and individually.

Also sorry for the double post but I still think not enough attention is being given to the fact that we have ANOTHER record IN PROGRESS right now. And not a tied record either, Shape Of You just got the 33rd week in the top 10 and nobody's been talking at all about whether or not it's gonna stay in the top 10 or what. All you peeps complaining about a tied record really should be focusing more on this because it just broke the tied record between Closer and How Do I Live. I know it's being knocked down by one spot by Taylor but beyond that is Strip That Down, Rake It Up, or Bank Account a challenger?

I know it's being knocked down by one spot by Taylor but beyond that is Strip That Down, Rake It Up, or Bank Account a challenger? It's being overshadowed because the top 10 record has been flirted with more often and more recently; within the past two years "Uptown Funk" was 1 week shy of tying the record, within the past year "Closer" did tie the record, and now "Shape of You" set a new record. At the same time, nothing has been within a week of the record for weeks at #1 (much less tied it) in the past 21 years. So, that alone makes the #1s record more notable. Plus, in general people/media are more hyped about #1s than weeks in the top 10. That is only to give an explanation. It's obviously truly impressive that "Shape of You" has been able to stay in the top 10 for 8 months now.

For example, I would think that Stay is more Zedd's single than Alessia's, and they seem to be both equaly credited, she's a female and the only vocalist. Right? So let's not jump right on these generalisations, that's dumb After all, we all have subjective pov when it comes to what criterion are relevant when it comes to give credit - even you! If being credited on a song determines the fact that you deserve credit for its achievements, then how about songs like Hey Mama or Right Round which do not credit either Bebe Rexha or Ke$ha?

I would think that Stay is more Zedd's single than Alessia's Then you would be wrong, because they get equal billing. If acts get equal billing, then they split equally. It's not a difficult concept to understand. Everything else people have been going on about (who had more hits, what was on who's album, etc.) is worthless stan semantics.

My post was sarcasm, in reaction to numerous attempts to correct people that One Sweet Day was NOT a Mariah solo record just because Boyz II Men has fewer overall #1 hits or "the average listener thinks" or whatever The whole discussion about whose song 'One Sweet Day' really is, hurts my brain. To me, the answer is obvious.
