I know we've had threads about this before, but I couldn't find any that weren't ancient and I thought it would be fun to talk about.
What were some single choices, specifically lead singles, that killed or severely hurt the careers of big stars?
The first one that I can think of is 5SOS and She's Kinda Hot -- it became their highest peaking single on the hot #100 just by virtue of its debut and they were looking like they would be the next big thing. However SKH was a terrible single choice that received quite a bit of backlash, pop radio paid them dust for the remainder of the era, and now no one remembers them.

These examples seem more to infer that that the second/fellow up singles "killed" the careers more than anything else?

These examples seem more to infer that that the second/fellow up singles "killed" the careers more than anything else? Not necessarily. Anticipated or hyped singles still do well almost by default, but they don't have long chart lives and subsequent singles fail to have any impact because suddenly people stop caring.

True, I just meant the Katy, 5Seconds, and Mariah examples. After Chained and Obsessed, all the singles were so iffy. If they had released catchy material I think things probably would have turned out very differently, especially in Katy's case and Mariah definitely had better options that HATEU, by far one of the least commercial tracks on that album. The teen-pop/rock band thing of 5Seconds never really took off in the US and was only hot for like one summer. Madonna was already past her prime generally, so she doesn't even count LOL.

Don't Wanna Know - Maroon 5 (If this is really a lead single) Chained To The Rhythm (This song is good, but not good for a lead single) Perfect Illusion (Flop, Million Reasons is million times better)

My love is for real (Paula Abdul) Sleeping in my car (Roxette) I like both songs so I don't understand why. I do remember reading that Roxette's rocker image seemed too fake and put the nail on the coffin With Paula, I guess the whole middle eastern vibe was too much for a comeback...

I love Paula but there was no obvious lead single on the album Maybe It's all about feeling good But not sure As for Sleeping ... That song was huge in Europe, so don't think it actually killed their carear They wanted to split and there were some health issues I think

#Beautiful was Mariah's last top 40 hit for her. Sure, Obsessed pretty much killed her career as well, but #Beautiful could also share some of the blame for effectively killing her career, since she has been unable to get another top 40 hit since then as well.

In the US SIMC was a huge disappointment after their successful eras and was their last hot 100 song, without even reaching top 40. I love them, and they entered my personal chart several times after Sleeping, and I downloaded songs from their efforts this decade too. Was ecstatic to see Marie recovering from her cancer and singing again. Wanted to see them live but they had to cancel their tour due to recurring cancer :'(

I wouldn't say that either of these singles were responsible for 'killing' her career though. They just happen to be her last two successful singles (in the US). I'd say other circumstances led to her losing commercial appeal over these singles themselves.

That was 5 years after Obsessed though, and despite being a top 15 hit, it fell pretty quickly after peaking and isn't remember very well today. There's also a lot of backlash against Obsessed, whereas I haven't heard any against Beautiful.

"Look What You Made Me Do" (hopefully) It's kinda done the polar opposite already though Breaking several records and such, and it's likely #1 debut on the Hot 100

LWYMMD is undoubtably gonna be huge, at least at first, but it wouldn't surprise me if it falls fairly quickly and helps feed the public backlash towards Taylor Swift in the same way that No did for Meghan Trainor.
Also I don't know how I forgot about this one, but Accidental Racist by Brad Paisley. I never hear that one mentioned anymore, but there was a ton of controversy about it at the time due to some verrrrrry loaded lyrics and questionable messages and I don't think Paisey has had any very big songs since, even on country radio.

Chained To The Rhythm was not a 'Career Killing' lead single -.- In my opinion, it was amazing lead single that was followed by horrific singles and a (I'm sorry Katy) kind of terrible album.
It was the last great thing she did. Besides Feels.

- Chained to the Rhythm is great.
- Not Myself Tonight, definitely, sadly
- Perfect Illusion, jesus.
- I'm so happy someone brought up that 5SOS song! They did have that song that did well for a hot minute and then totally vanished off the face of the planet! They were like about the blow up, too!

I loved both as well. I fell in love with Paula's song the first time I heard it. I first heard it when the video for it aired on The Box. It was getting a lot of requests around that time. I loved the R&B vibe of it and then of course Ofra Haza's soaring intro and backing vocals. Paula looked hot. I think the song was too ahead of its time. Middle Eastern and Indian influences would start to become a regular thing in Pop, R&B, and Hip Hop music in the early 2000s. I was shocked to discover it didn't do well. I think "Crazy Cool" could have been a better lead single and then MLIFR could have been the followup because CC was somewhat in line with material she had released before. On the subject or Roxette, I thought they did the Pop/Rock music convincingly. I used to see SIMC on MTV Internacional a lot when it was a single. I thought it was catchy enough, but I guess it didn't connect. It's a crime that the followup "Crash! Boom! Bang!" didn't chart in the U.S. Based on how much I saw the video in those days, I never would have guessed it did so poorly.

Rixton-Me and My Broken Heart [Kinda copied Rob Thomas' song "Lonely No More] it was big for awhile and they vanished like 5 Seconds Of Summer the year before.
