#Beautiful was Mariah's last top 40 hit for her. Sure, Obsessed pretty much killed her career as well, but #Beautiful could also share some of the blame for effectively killing her career, since she has been unable to get another top 40 hit since then as well. Honey #Beautiful is a song that defines careers, not kills them. Her pop radio career was essentially over long before that iconic bop was released.

Billy Squier - Rock Me Tonite Michael Bolton - Can I Touch You... There? Avril Lavigne - Hello Kitty Hello Kitty wasn't the lead single for her self titled album, Here's To Never Growing Up Was.

Either way, she lost even more relevancy at that point, as many of her other songs have flopped since then.

Some alternative/rock examples:
The Cure - "The 13th" Cracker - "I Hate My Generation" Presidents of the USA - "Mach 5" Sugar Ray - "Mr. Bartender" Everlast - "Black Jesus" Lit - "Lipstick and Bruises" Gorillaz - "Stylo" (too bad, I liked this one) U2 - "Get On Your Boots" Phoenix - "Entertainment" MGMT - "Flash Delirium" Nickelback - "When We Stand Together" (at least outside of Active Rock) Alanis Morrissette - "Thank U" The Cranberries - "Salvation" Third Eye Blind - "Blinded" Everclear - "Volvo Driving Soccer Mom" Limp Bizkit - "Eat You Alive" Evanescence - "What You Want" Incubus - "Adolescents" The Strokes - "Under Cover of Darkness" Foster The People - "Coming of Age" (another one I liked)
And here's a few where it's too early to tell for sure, but they'll have an uphill battle from here:
The Neighbourhood - "R.I.P. 2 My Youth" The Black Keys - "Fever" Of Monsters and Men - "Crystals" Lorde - "Green Light" Bleachers - "Don't Take The Money" Muse - "Dig Down"

I don't think you can chalk Mariah's example to one single song killing her career. After over 20 years of hitting the charts, and her ups and downs, her chart appearances were going to diminish anyway. Beautiful in no way "killed" her career. I wouldn't even say Obsessed did either. Radio simply moved on. If anything, Beautiful proved that she is still capable of radio interest with the right song. She's just not going to have the luxury of easy hits.

More broadly, there seem to be several artists cited here for whom it's too early to say if a lead single even killed a particular era, let alone a career.

She's just not going to have the luxury of easy hits. I feel like the only reason #Beautiful did as well as it did was because she was coming off her appearance on Idol that same year, which got her back on the spotlight again (and she premiered the video in the season finale), not to mention her constant squabbing with Nicki Minaj. Also, Miguel was an up and coming artist that was getting some buzz at that point. That was a "right place, right time" type of thing. Not sure if it would've been a hit without any of that. I think the general audience in general was starting to lose interest in her, and the quality of her music was going downhill in comparison to where she was in the 90's and the Mimi era. That, and I think the "comeback story" during the Emancipation Of Mimi" era finally ran out of steam. While the next era in 2008 did capitalize on that, that was pretty much it after that. And, of course, the whole age thing got in the way as well. With all the pop girls that came in the late 2000's and music going in a different direction, there was really no more room for Mariah. I believe is a whole combination of all of those components contribute to why she isn't relevant anymore.

More broadly, there seem to be several artists cited here for whom it's too early to say if a lead single even killed a particular era, let alone a career. Yeah, Loverboy would definitely be a 'final nail in the coffin' type song had Mariah not made a miraculous comeback a few years later. Same with Never Again by Kelly Clarkson. I feel like most of the examples here are just songs from albums that happened to be first singles from albums that were an artist's first flop era. A career-killing single would be the type of song that got a negative response from the get-go and ended what should have been a continuation of success, or something completely left-turn or out of the ordinary that just didn't do well that the artist was never able to climb back from. Not a song from an artist whose success was already dwindling for years. I might also suggest that successful major hits could be career killing too. Blurred Lines?

Billy Squier - Rock Me Tonite This is the best example so far given. The video for this song killed his career and he's even gone on record talking about it.

And DTTM was a big hit and more important is still charging right now so I dunno where that one came from haha.

"Don't Tell Me," Avril Lavigne
It didn't kill her career, but slowed her momentum down drastically. She could have been what Taylor Swift is now if the order of singles for Under My Skin was as follows:
01. Daydream 02. My Happy Ending 03. Don't Tell Me 04. Fall To Pieces

I don't see how a lot of these examples killed careers?
Most of those mentioned have continued to have success after said songs - whether it be through hit singles, big tours or successful albums.

Hello Kitty wasn't the lead single for her self titled album, Here's To Never Growing Up Was. Oops I forgot lol But I think it buried her career mainly in that she lost whatever rocker credibility she had left. Her previous single Let Me Go with her husband started the digging however. Surprised nobody's mentioned Bleep I'm Madonna yet. It seems similar in the I'm Desperately Trying to Get Attention from the Hot 100 and I Don't Care If I Throw Away My Career genre.

Yeah, we never really heard from her after that. She moved into country/kid's albums. Shame, the song wasn't half bad.

Ashlee Simpson - "Pieces of Me" That song didn't kill her career, though her SNL performance of it did. Another idea for a thread: Career killing performances.

Billy Squier - Rock Me Tonite Michael Bolton - Can I Touch You... There? Avril Lavigne - Hello Kitty I would argue that as successful as it was, “Girlfriend” was the beginning of the end for Avril Lavigne. Most of her fans jumped ship after that

Her career has been so mismanaged pretty much since UMS. The fact that Daydream was completely omitted from UMS was the dumbest thing her team has ever done. That sounded like a smash.

Yeah, it was "Complicated" but bigger, catchier, and more mature.
I think they were aiming to change her image and go for something more "serious," but it wasn't worth it in the long run.

Does it count if it killed their career before it began?
I genuinely believe Skylar Gray could've had a decently big career, but then she released Cmon Let Me Ride as her lead single. Such a bizzare choice and awful song.

It's kinda done the polar opposite already though Breaking several records and such, and it's likely #1 debut on the Hot 100 You're unfortunately right. One can still hope though I have good news for you, Taylor Swift has made her career flop terribly, LWYMMD is now the second-worst performing multi-week #1, just ahead of Bootylicious. Her followup singles did terrible, look at Ready For It, flopped terribly, End Game, the same thing can be said about it, Gorgeous and Call It What You Want, less weeks on Hot 100 than amount of fingers on a hand.
