Big Hoops(the bigger the better) - Nelly Furtado. The break is basically what killled her career but releasing Big Hoops was basically the final nail in the coffin.

Cake by Flo Rida. He was on a roll before it and that song flopped and so did everything else afterwards.

Kylie Minogue - Some Kind of Bliss.
Of course her career actually peaked afterwards, but that song just bombed upon arrival (undeservedly so) and put her career on life support throughout the Impossible Princess era, until Spinning Around smashed and she made a comeback.

He was on a roll before it and that song flopped and so did everything else afterwards. this is. extremely not true ? his career was coming to a natural close and he had had several bombs before that (hello friday, greenlight, zillionaire, hola), cake just happened to be his last gasp of relevance. iirc it actually did slightly better then the few singles that preceded it, not that it was a hit or anything

I thought that song was really refreshing when I heard it for the first time. But the caveat is that I heard it when I was discovering her discography in the 2010s. One can only wonder why it wasn’t interesting in 1997 during a time when that sound was not necessarily foreign. Maybe the sound just wasn’t what people wanted from Kylie. They probably wanted a “Spinning Around” sooner than they got it. But I’m so happy we have Impossible Princess and she didn’t just skip to Light Years.

Die Young - Kesha Trouble - P!nk (almost) Keeps Getting Better // Not Myself Tonight - Christina Aguilera Perfect Illusion - Lady Gaga Celebration // Give Me All Your Lovin - Madonna Green Light - Lorde Got Your Number - Serena Ryder thank u - Alanis (this one hurt because I was obsessed with JLP) Filthy - Justin Timberlake ?
I will not add Work Bitch, cause whoever slept on that bop, missed out.

Most of these careers are still thriving and many others were killed by things other than these singles.

Most of these careers are still thriving and many others were killed by things other than these singles. Are they at the heights with new single releases, like they were prior? That’s how I’m looking at it. Id say out of the ones I listed, I’d say only P!nk and Gaga.

It's interesting how times change. Once considered here as a career killing single, Obsessed has been one of Mariah's top streamed songs for a few years now.

I consider Judas not a career killing single for Gaga, but definitely the beginning of her downward trajectory as a pop star.

Well, "Born This Way" was technically a hit lead single, but it pushed away a lot of the general public that supported her during The Fame. Possibly unpopular opinion, but I would argue "Girlfriend" for Avril Lavigne. Yes it was a big hit, but it sort of ruined her image and what made her popular in the first place, and just made her seem unlikeable. She hasn't had a major hit
