^It is an Amazon Original. So it is only available to buy or stream there, although it does have a video on YouTube as well. That explains why most people weren't even aware of the song in the US.

The UK’s Top 40 biggest songs of 2019 have been unveiled, and Lewis Capaldi takes the Number 1 spot with Someone You Loved.
The Scottish singer-songwriter’s big breakout track, which spent seven weeks at Number 1 across March/April, notched up a massive 2.33 million chart sales in 2019, according to Official Charts Company data. Someone You Loved is also the year’s most-streamed song, with 228 million audio streams across the likes of Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer.
The news comes as music trade body the BPI revealed that music consumption in the UK was up for fifth year in a row, with 114 billion music streams logged in 2019 – up 3,000% on 2012.
Three more Lewis Capaldi songs finish inside the year-end Top 40: Top 5 hit Hold Me While You Wait at 14, Bruises at 25 and Grace at 27. View Lewis Capaldi's Official UK Chart history in full.
Another 2019 breakthrough star, US rapper and singer Lil Nas X, takes second place with Old Town Road on 1.75 million chart sales. The hip-hop-meets-country track, which first gained success as a viral hit on Tik Tok, spent two weeks at Number 1 across April/May.
Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber’s I Don’t Care – the lead single from Ed’s No.6 Collaborations Project album – finishes third on 1.43 million chart sales, Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy is fourth (1.34m), and Calvin Harris & Rag’n’Bone Man’s Giant – which spent five weeks at Number 2 in March – is fifth (1.29m).
Eight more Number 1 songs in 2019 feature in the UK’s Official Top 40 songs of the year, four of which place inside the Top 10. Ava Max’s January chart-topper Sweet But Psycho is at 6 (1.25m); Stormzy’s Vossi Bop finishes at 7 (1.14m); Tones & I’s 11-week chart-topper Dance Monkey – the longest-running Number 1 by a female artist ever – is at 8 (1.12m); and Senorita by Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello rounds the Top 10 out at 10 (1.07m).
Other big breakthroughs this year came for Mabel, who ranks ninth with Don’t Call Me Up, and production trio Meduza, who land at 11 with Piece Of Your Heart ft. Goodboys. AJ Tracey’s Ladbroke Grove (18), Dominic Fike’s 3 Nights (24), NSG’s Options ft. Tion Wayne (32), Russ & Tion Wayne’s Keisha & Becky (35), Regard’s Ride It (38) and Young T & Bugsey’s Strike A Pose (39) also rank inside the year-end Top 40.
Elsewhere, other acts with multiple entries in the Top 40 are Ariana Grande, with 7 Rings (16), Thank U Next (30) and Break Up With You’re Girlfriend I’m Bored (33); Ed Sheeran with I Don’t Care (3), Beautiful People ft. Khalid (21), and Take Me Back To London ft. Stormzy (23); while Billie Eilish gains a second Top 40 entry with Bury A Friend at 36.

Albums by Lewis Capaldi, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande and Tom Walker are among 2019's big-hitters.
The UK’s biggest albums of 2019 have been revealed, with Lewis Capaldi taking the Number 1 spot with his debut collection Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent.
The Scottish singer-songwriter’s first record, released in May, sold 641,000 albums across all formats and album equivalents, including over 250,000 copies on CD and vinyl combined, according to Official Charts Company data.
The album debuted at Number 1 and spent a total of six weeks at the top of the Official Albums Chart.
According to music trade body the BPI, the equivalent of 154 million albums were either streamed, purchased on physical formats or downloaded in 2019 – up by 7.5% in volume on the total recorded in 2018. This is the highest amount since 2006, when the figure stood at 161.4m albums.
The overall consumption of music in the UK has grown for a fifth consecutive year, boosted by the continued growth in streaming, which rose 26% year-on-year.
While the number of CD and digital albums bought fell by just over a quarter, the formats continue to play an important role in shaping success on the Official Albums Chart. For 29 of the year’s 52 weeks, physical accounted for over half of chart-eligible sales for the Number 1 album.
Elsewhere on the year-end Official Albums Chart, Ed Sheeran finishes second place with his No.6 Collaborations Project album (568,000), a five-week leader in July/August, and The Greatest Showman album continued to perform well throughout 2019, placing third overall with 524,000 chart sales logged this year. Two more soundtracks, Bohemian Rhapsody (6) and A Star Is Born (10), also rank inside the year-end Top 10.
US singer-songwriter Billie Eilish also found huge success this year: her debut album, When We All Fall Alseep Where Do We Go?, made her the youngest female artist to top the UK’s Official Albums Chart in March, and places fourth overall this year with 370,000 chart sales. Fellow US star Ariana Grande ranks seventh with her chart-topping fifth album Thank U, Next (293,000).
As well as Lewis and Billie, there was another big debut album in 2019 for Tom Walker; his Number 1 record What A Time To Be Alive places eighth on 270,000 chart sales.
Despite being released in November, Rod Stewart’s orchestral album You’re In My Heart makes it into the year-end Top 10 at Number 10. A massive 99% of Rod’s sales were physical or download.

Ed Sheeran has now 9 #1s in the Official Single Charts, including 4 in less than the last 8 months. Mr. Brightside continues to extend its record number of weeks in the chart. I do think Shotgun could reach 100 weeks charted.

Shape Of You at #76 in the year-end chart. Dear Lord. Its a great sing though.
Piece of Your Heart and Ladbroke Grove are legendary songs though. Absolutely fantastic.

One thing is just realized is that 5 songs from the Frozen 2 soundtrack are charting in the singles chart this week.

Also film soundtracks (those labelled "Motion Picture Cast Recording") have been moved from the album chart to the compilations chart (ie. The Greatest Showman, A Star Is Born, etc). Weird decision since album sales are already dire.

What has driven "Mr. Brightside" in recent years?
Also- even though the UK singles chart is 100 positions, does it still regard the top 75 as the main, official chart? I always wondered why it and the albums chart top 75 was touted as the official charts for so long, when they positions went deeper than that.

Weird decision since album sales are already dire. I see that's the same chart that includes the Now compilations. It is probably as bad a decision as when Billboard decided to create the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart. It probably is even worse since I remember reading that some of the Compilations chart #1 could have been #1 in the Official Albums chart.

I always wondered why it and the albums chart top 75 was touted as the official charts for so long, when they positions went deeper than that. Regarding Mr. Brightside, the Official Charts gave this explanation:
Regarding the top 75, yes, it used to became 75 positions at some position at some point and continues to be that in Music Week. You can read more that in Wikipedia, which is where I got most of what I mentioned.

Also film soundtracks (those labelled "Motion Picture Cast Recording") have been moved from the album chart to the compilations chart (ie. The Greatest Showman, A Star Is Born, etc). Weird decision since album sales are already dire. I see that's the same chart that includes the Now compilations. It is probably as bad a decision as when Billboard decided to create the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart. It probably is even worse since I remember reading that some of the Compilations chart #1 could have been #1 in the Official Albums chart. NOW! albums would be #1 about 20-30%? of the time. The OCC made this decision in 1989 because compilations had become TOO dominant Until very recently, NOW! albums debuted with 200-300k (amongst the largest debuts of the year), and gradually trailed off from there (with the November ones selling steady through Christmas). So the NOW! albums would've hogged the top spot for about 3-4 weeks each. And three NOW!'s are released per year (Easter, July and Nov). It might seem strange, but these albums sold in insane quantities in the UK. I use past tense because their sales have fallen dramatically recently. Mix in the other compilations and soundtracks and yeah. Having a #1 album is seen as a big distinction, so I get why labels wouldn't want their artists constantly being blocked. What has driven "Mr. Brightside" in recent years? Also- even though the UK singles chart is 100 positions, does it still regard the top 75 as the main, official chart? I always wondered why it and the albums chart top 75 was touted as the official charts for so long, when they positions went deeper than that. In a sense yes, mostly for consistency. The chart switched from a top 50 to a top 75 in 1978. And then to a top 100 in 1983. But the I believe #76-100 was seen as the "bubbling under" section. The chart reverted to a top 75 in the early 90's, and then became a top 100 once again in 1994 when the UK version of Soundscan (Millward-Brown) was adopted. However, I think the #76-100 wasn't publicly available until the internet age? And the early 2000's had a recurrent rule for the 76-100 section as well. Kind of messy. Then digital sales were added in 2005 and, well the messy period doesn't end there (like how, until 2007, only songs released physically were allowed to chart), but I believe the recurrent rule was ditched at this point? And at some point there was a 101-200 section that wasn't available to the public. But I think that was axed after ACR was adopted in 2017? (I hope I got all that right).

Thanks for the responses. Messy, indeed. I guess top 75 runs is what to look at for singles, at least those that reached that portion of the chart. Any ideas how many weeks "Mr. Brightside" has logged in the top 75, and if that's the longest stretch? Given its top 100 lead, odds aree that it holds that record, too.

^Only 47 weeks which is far away from My Way's record 75 weeks. The Official Charts has this cool feature that allows you to get more information on a song's chart run called "Chart Facts". For Mr. Brightside, it surprisingly shows that it spent only one week in the top 10 and 20, and six in the top 40. Talk about an atypical chart run, it only spent 4 weeks in its original run, the longest one for it has been 35 weeks and has had more than 50 separate chart runs.

So the ACR rule was proven to be even more of a joke this week. Songs (younger than 3 years) are reset to standard ratio if they gain 25% compared to the market. So that means a bunch of songs were reset this week by default (including Someone You Loved which is back in the top 10 lol) because of the Christmas songs dropping out a week ago.

Lewis Capaldi got a #1 album for like a 28th week instead of Selena....Anyways, Queen Elizabeth will die on July 28th and a song will go #1 about her death. Olivia Newton-John will have also have a top ten single.

Next week's singles chart looking very interesting:
26 January 2020 By Jack White
The Official Chart: First Look, on BBC Radio 1 from 6pm – 7pm every Sunday, offers a first glance of the Top 20 ahead of Friday’s Official Singles Chart Top 100. The chart is based on preliminary sales and early streaming reports.
Here's how the week is shaping up so far.
Lewis Capaldi is in pole position to claim his second UK Number 1 single this week. Before You Go rises 5-1 based on chart sales across the weekend, following the release of the song’s official music video.
The Weeknd is on track to reach Number 2 with Blinding Lights, which would match his career peak in the UK achieved by 2016’s Starboy ft. Daft Punk.
Billie Eilish’s Everything I Wanted could return to the Top 10 on Friday at Number 7, spurred on by the release of its official music video.
J Hus has three songs vying for places in the Top 20, taken from his new album Big Conspiracy. They are Play Play ft. Burna Boy (11), the album's title track ft. iceè tgm (14) and Repeat ft. Koffee (19).
