Honestly, I don't get the hype for this one at all. It's just there. The lyrics aren't really special and get repetitive fast, it doesn't have a super catchy melody, and it's not a phenomenal vocal. It's just watered down top 40/r&b. ICYDK was far better.

I love "Memory Won't Let Me" and this song but the label had to release this one. It is by far the most streamed non-single on the album (over 3.0 million more than the next closest, "You Ain't Here To Kiss Me") and 7.0 million more than "Memory Won't Let Me"...all three of which has gotten the benefit of Sirius/XM exposure, over the last year. This song has definitely gotten the biggest reaction outside of the terrestrial radio singles so far. I just don't think the label could have justified passing this one up before moving on and even though it's a great album, I never predict any debut will release more than four singles on it.
"Mercy" is slower than most radio singles these days and might burn on listeners when it gets close to peaking but this should be one of the biggest hits of 2018 -- it seems to be resonating, similar to "In Case You Didn't Know." Brett Young isn't a vocalist for everyone but he gets the approval for delivering this song in my book and I think the lyrics and melody are great.

While I fully recognize that "Mercy" is a powerful song and might go to #1, it brings back painful memories of breakups and heartaches I have caused, and I choose not to re-live that pain by listening to this song.
Breakup songs work best for me when there are overriding images of good times/something positive.
"Mercy" is powerful but too painful.

Yes, yes, YES! I loooove this song. Incredible. So glad that they switched up the singles and picked this one because I think this is gonna be huge. Hopefully as big or bigger than "In Case You Didn't Know." He's coming for all the award nominations that he got snubbed for with that one, too.

This was the right choice. I was afraid with the release of “Memory Won’t Let Me” that “Mercy” may never see the light of day. I’m so glad the label decided against MWLM. Yay!

I just heard the 2 songs a week ago. I like both songs, but I am glad Mercy is gonna be the single after all. I need to check this guy's album.

Argh! I love Mercy, it's a highlight on the album. BUT, I really will cry if Memory Won't Let Me isn't released at some point. :(

I dont get the reason "Mercy" is so loved because I havent found anything so special on this one but I´ve always noticed it as a fan favorite tough.I would prefer "You Aint Here to Kiss Me" but I knew it wouldnt be a single anyway.

This is definitely his best single so far. Still not a big fan of his voice, and I think it'd sound a lot better if somebody like Keith Urban sang this, but it's a quality song. He does do a great job of showing emotion in his voice, which makes the song more powerful. I expect this to be a giant hit, probably "Heaven" and "Marry Me" big.

One of the best songs on the album, so I'm happy this is seeing single treatment! I would've been perfectly fine with "Memory Won't Let Me", but I wanted to see "Mercy" as a single down the road, so I'm glad that's happening.

This article makes it sound likely that Mercy will be the last single off of his debut album, and his next single and sophomore album could be out this summer. BTW, heard this song on a local radio station for the first time today. Such a needed change of pace.

This song sounds like a pretty massive hit to me, and I'd be pretty surprised if it missed the #1 spot. I guess we'll just have to see which of us is right! I think this will be a big seller and will stream well too. It's already seen good numbers largely based off SiriusXM airplay alone. I think it'll get a lot of airplay at terrestrial radio which will in turn make it a hit in all aspects -- airplay, sales, and streams. |
