I want Papa Don't Preach vocals back! That album era was great in terms of the timbre of her voice. That's why I love "True Blue" so much.

I know some people don't want Madonna chasing #1 songs or trying to have a hit, but to be honest, I would rather her do that, then write songs about Trump and Timesup, etc.

Sorry, Patti LuPone: Madonna Is Also Evita Patti and others consistently try and rewrite Madonna's success as 'Evita.' February 3, 2018 Daryl Deino www.inquisitr.com/opinion/4769381/madonna-patti-lupone-also-evita/There is no denying the fact that technically, Patti LuPone can sing circles (as well as any other shapes) around Madonna. After LuPone’s Grammy performance of “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” Sunday evening, news media outlets, such as the Los Angeles Times, have pitted the two women against each other in the past week for absolute clickbait. Madonna — as usual — is the one criticized, even though she wasn’t even at the Grammy Awards. Most praised LuPone’s performance. And technically, LuPone proved that age doesn’t hinder singing ability. But LuPone’s vocals were also all over the place, and unlike Madonna’s somewhat restrained performance of the same song in 1996, Lupone’s vocals made absolutely no connection with the song she was singing. Were all of those who praised LuPone’s performance listening to the same one this author was? It was as if LuPone was trying to remind the world that she is the one and only Evita. But the fact that people, even if negatively, brought Madonna’s name up when discussing the performance proves LuPone didn’t succeed. Let’s go back in time a little bit. In 1996, Madonna shocked the world with her fantastic portrayal in the hit movie Evita. The film certainly was overhyped and didn’t become the blockbuster that Disney had expected. But the film, even in limited release, made over $50 million in the United States (Box Office Mojo figures). Evita made $141 internationally. Sorry, naysayers — that makes the film a success, especially by 1996 and 1997 standards. Overall, Madonna received positive notices from critics. There were those, blinded by their hatred of the star, that criticized Madonna. However, they only represented a small minority. Madonna won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in Evita. And she was considered a front-runner for the Oscars in 1997. When she didn’t even get a nomination, people, some who could care less about Madonna, were shocked. Some thought that Madonna was being punished for her “lack of morals,” which, in hindsight, is hilarious given the future revealings of Woody Allen, Harvey Weinstein, and others. In general, Madonna isn’t a great actress. But that didn’t matter for her role in Evita. She didn’t act; she actually became Evita. And for a pop singer, Madonna really outdid herself. It’s as if she became another singer, giving emotional performances in songs such as “You Must Love Me” and “Another Suitcase In Another Hall” that nobody thought she’d ever be capable of. The soundtrack for Evita was an international hit, and the only ones who criticized it were those who compared Madonna’s singing to Patti LuPone’s. However, there was never a time in pop music history that an artist, not known for singing abilities, shocked so many people. The movie and soundtrack helped Madonna breathe new life into a career that most thought was dead by the mid-1990s. The idea that Madonna “was awful” in Evita has only developed within the past 10 years. As an independent female who plays by her own rules rather than the ones a patriarchal society sets for women, Madonna has become a huge threat. She was already a threat in the 1990s, but acting “proper” and getting married helped gain her accolades — all which have been erased since she divorced and continues to not “act her age.” This isn’t to say that Madonna, who has produced many WTF moments in the past ten years, isn’t also to blame for hurting her legacy. But to understand the effects of misogyny in the entertainment industry and society on the whole, one must listen to Madonna’s famous speech at the Billboard Women In Music event that took place at the end of 2016. It’s eye-opening and explains a lot. That’s why it was absolutely disgusting that some cheered when, as reported by E! Online, LuPone, who admits to only seeing one scene in Evita, disgustingly slammed Madonna’s performance in the film. It was pretty obvious that Patti was still bitter for being turned down for the film role. And it was quite ironic that many who praised Madonna’s performance back in 1996 were suddenly on LuPone’s side. They also went for Andy Cohen’s usual bait of pitting two strong women against each other. Patti LuPone, her PR team, and her fawners in the media may think they are erasing one of Madonna’s biggest career victories. But if LuPone’s Broadway performance as Evita was as spectacular as they say, there wouldn’t be any need to mention Madonna’s name every time LuPone’s is mentioned. Patty LuPone is Evita. But, so is Madonna. Deal with it, haters.

www.npr.org/2017/07/20/538317263/turning-the-tables-150-greatest-albums-made-by-women-page-14Turning The Tables: The 150 Greatest Albums Made By Women13. Madonna, Like a Prayer (Sire, 1989) In 1989, AIDS was ravaging cities everywhere, particularly New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The Supreme Court had begun to chip away at abortion rights. Activists were handing out condoms in the streets and fighting the indifference of the Reagan Administration, which instead supported the abstinence-only policies of fundamentalist Christians and the Catholic Church. Madonna's album Like A Prayer, released that same year, daringly takes on the struggles of a generation that refused to accept spirituality without sensuality. Through interweaving gospel, funk, soul and pop, the album's songs raise questions about religion, sexuality, gender equality and interdependence. For one thing, the title song opens with a few seconds of a hard rock guitar that stop abruptly and make way for a gospel choir and an organ. The lyrics suggest a girl who might experience God as a lover — or is it a girl who loves a man as if he is God? While "Oh Father" was in many ways about Madonna's own father, it goes beyond her relationship with him and instead alludes to someone who abuses power. And when all those activists weren't agitating in the streets they were dancing to "Keep It Together," Madonna's tribute to her family. While most critics saw this as the album where Madonna went from bubblegum pop to true artistry, that wasn't the only thing she did with Like a Prayer. With this album she also led the way for a new generation top female pop stars to express themselves. —Laura Sydell (NPR Staff) www.npr.org/2017/07/24/538354622/turning-the-tables-150-greatest-albums-made-by-women-page-963. Madonna, Like a Virgin (Sire, 1984) Her self-titled debut, in 1983, had been Madonna Louise Ciccone's declaration, of sorts. She would one day be a household name — and just one name, thank you, would be plenty. But it was the follow-up album Madonna released, Like a Virgin, that made that a reality. Co-produced with Nile Rodgers, its buoyant, confectionery dance-pop glossed with a modern, new wave sheen helped usher in the golden age of MTV, an era that still feels defined by her ecstatic writhing, wrapped in acres of bridal tulle, dangling crucifixes, and rubber bracelets, on the stage of the first VMAs two months before the full album's release. She went on to show savvy, intuitive mastery of the new form (and marketing platform) to build a dazzling, ever-shapeshifting 360-degree persona — sound, image, art, text — which she manipulated with an iron fist clad in a fingerless lace glove. Like a Virgin, and all that came with it, made it clear that there would never be a pop music landscape without the impact and influence of Madonna again — and it made it hard to imagine how there had even been one without her in the first place. —Alison Fensterstock (Contributor)

Love to tell? Fascinating video nonetheless. How Love To Tell from Patrick Leonard ended up with Madonna | Top 2000: The Untold Stories - YouTube www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DMESfrMcw4The lyrics are spellbinding. Need lyrics like these on her new album. I have a tale to tell Sometimes it gets so hard to hide it well I was not ready for the fall Too blind to see the writing on the wall A man can tell a thousand lies I've learned my lesson well Hope I live to tell The secret I have learned, 'till then It will burn inside of me I know where beauty lives I've seen it once, I know the warm she gives The light that you could never see It shines inside, you can't take that from me The truth is never far behind You kept it hidden well If I live to tell The secret I knew then Will I ever have the chance again If I ran away, I'd never have the strength To go very far How would they hear the beating of my heart Will it grow cold The secret that I hide, will I grow old How will they hear When will they learn How will they know

Can't wait for new music from Her Madgesty, but, in the meantime, her social media posts are head-scratching. The one photo, holding the purse, was one of the least flattering images I'ev ever seen of her - why she'd post that one, not sure. The fork facial, or whatever it is, was... interesting. But, hey, as long as she keeps the music under wraps from hackers, let her post away with all this other stuff.

She really needs to lay off the fillers. She also is a fan of taking these overhead shots or under chin shots, which do nothing for her. At any rate, I am always there for the music, which is what it always is about for me. I want an old fashioned rollout where you have no idea what anything sounds like until she wants you to

I hope she focuses on HAC and AC this time around. HAC has been breaking away from Pop more and more and supporting songs that barely scrape the Pop Top 30.
Heck, Shania Twain and Pat Benatar did quite well last year on AC after not releasing music in years. She can still chase Pop if she likes, but I think focusing efforts on multiple formats would help her have a longer, sustained album campaign.
My greater hope is that HAC becomes like Urban AC where acts who don't get much play on Pop and Urban anymore can find a solid audience there - I think we've been seeing that with the likes of Toni, Janet, P!nk, and Kelly C.

bat, Pat B.'s airplay at AC was very limited in terms of spins and audience. Shania Twain's did a bit better, though even that didn't do much on the whole.
Madonna isn't the kind to do what people say she should do. So, expect more "pop chasing." She will do whatever she thinks will help her get some notice/play at Mainstream Top 40 (the RH album was a mess in terms of rollout, so LFL isn't part of the discussion). She's not going to attain it on her own, hence likely collaborations. Even if the pop audience/youth aren't much interested in new Madonna music, she'll do what she has to do to get them to notice her. She's done if before- difference now is, that she's just about to turn 60, so not sure how much even a collabo with one of the hottest new acts can do in terms of chart success.

It just has to be undeniably good. GMAYL and LFL are not good lead singles. Like at all. “Girl Gone Wild” and “Ghosttown” are much better choices. But you don’t get a second shot at that age.
Hung Up was undeniable. Music was. Frozen definitely was.

Flipping through the new Entertainment Weekly, I was pleasantly surprised to see, in the Music section, the main article, "Ray of Light Turns 20." It has a still of M from the ROL video, blue background (plus a small pic of the album cover). Underneath, before the start of the article, it says: "How the superstar's mid-career swerve toward techno and spirituality yielded an album that still sounds like the future two decades on."

20 years ago ray of light enlightened us with mystical frozen Billboard Madonna's 'Frozen' Hits the Ice for Belgian Figure Skater's Olympics Routine In the 2018 Winter Olympics, we’ve seen an eclectic assortment of tunes soundtrack ice skating routines, with Olympians competing to music from Beyonce, Ed Sheeran, Cabaret, Moulin Rouge! and more. During Tuesday (Feb. 20) night’s broadcast of the ladies’ short program, Belgian skater Loena Hendrickx turned to the Queen of Pop for her routine, skating to Madonna’s Billboard Hot 100 No. 2 hit “Frozen.” Why? Because, you know, ice skating… ice...frozen. Get it?! And also, it’s just an incredible electronic ballad with a gorgeous, dramatic build. Unfortunately for Hendrickx, she missed one of her intended jumps, but on the upside, the artistry was top notch, with her nimble spin at the end of the song a highlight of her routine and the evening. Madonna’s “Frozen” has a special significance in Belgium. In 2005, Belgian songwriter Salvatore Acquaviva won a plagiarism case against the song, which resulted in “Frozen" getting iced out -- you couldn’t sell or broadcast the Madonna hit in Belgium until 2014, when the ruling was overturned. This Thursday (Feb. 22), the Ray of Light album that hosted “Frozen” will turn 20. Fun fact: Hendrickx, who is just 18, wasn’t even born when that classic LP dropped. www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop/8212683/madonna-frozen-winter-olympics-loena-hendrickx

If they collaborate, I will reserve judgment for the final product. It would be a way to grab some attention from the youth/top 40 audience, but I hope for something more overall-appealing/listener-friendly than, say, BIM.

I wish she would veer more towards her more "lush" sounding pop arrangements. Songs like Power of Goodbye, Joan of Arc, You'll See, Ghosttown, Take a Bow, Rain, Oh Father, etc. are the inspiration I am talking about. There are beautiful crescendos, good use of strings, powerful vocal, etc. She could always remix the crap out of them for the clubs and they could retain their pop sensibilities for radio. Her voice sounds great on these type of arrangements, they feel more appropriate for her, and don't sound like she is trying to chase stuff that is far too young for her. She doesn't need to regress and recreate these exact songs, but use it as a jumping off point.

I actually like the last few pics of her. She’s serving Bette Davis or Lucille Ball. She’s clearly tucked and pulled, but looks good to me.
