I think if this wasn't tied to the Madonna legend and phenomenon, it'd just be a random kitschy 80s track.

20. Obsession (45): I thought this was Human League when I firth heard this song It was a popular, top 10 back home and top 5 in my personal chart. I have appreciated it even further with time and become an 80s favorite. My ranking may seem a bit low, but at this point it was tough to rank the middle zone of this RD. By the way, the video that was played in our TV music station was primarily an extract of the movie where Chris Adkins strip dances to Lesley Anne Warren and co, which sort of was one of my first experiences of clear same-sex attraction in my childhood :) 19. Money for Nothing (13): >:( I mean, this was almost a top 10 for me in this RD, and even though it's a top 20 in this RD, it should have been higher taking into account the remaining songs in the list. MFN was HUGE back home, like contender for yearend #1 and decade #1! 18. The Power of Love (31): My favorite HL&TN song for sure. A personal and country chart-topper, that has aged quite well. Happy to see it this high. 17. Dress You Up (21): This got popular back home first thanks to a jeans TV commercial based on the intro. And just like all previous M singles that year, it soared to the upper tier of the chars. It was M's 4th personal chart-topper that year, following LAV, MG and ITG, and it has remained one of my favorites off 1980s Madonna. I love the more rock vibe of this one, the male background vocals throughout the song, the musical and sung bridge. Positively surprised that this got to the top 20 in this RD! 16. Would I Lie To You? (71): I'm an Annie Lennox fan, and a few Eurythmics songs are amongst my favorites of the 1980s... but this one is not really amongst them. It was just a personal and country top 25, and with little longevity. I've appreciated its dynamics, rocker vibe and Annie's voice more with time, but the song as a whole is just not one of my favs. I think there are far better songs in 1985 for this one to be top 40...

1-2-4-6-10-11-17-18-56-68 My bottom 2 remaining don't do a whole lot for me but I can certainly see why they would still be kicking around. Very surprised, but glad, that OOT made it in. I know we have this love-hate thing going on (:sip2:) but you'll love me for where I put 'Out Of Touch' because it's not one of my bottom 2 left.

Biggest surprise, to me, is that "Everything She Wants" made the top ten. A pleasant surprise, to be sure, but a surprise. Also happy with the performances for "The Power of Love" and "Obsession", especially the former, since I thought it would go out a lot earlier.
No complaints about this top ten whatsoever. A really solid group of songs.

Yes, great top 10. Happy about Hall & Oates and Don Henley and pleasantly surprised that Huey Lewis and Animotion made it to the top 20.

AH, BACK IN THE GAME, LADS! Zoned out a little bit, there. It hurts that Chaka Khan got so close only to fall short, and I was hoping Tears For Fears would triple up because "Head Over Heels" is better than "Shout" and just as good as "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", but basically, everything I wanted to happened this set did. Remaining ranks are 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 15, 27. Only my 27 I consider any less than great.

*We are really getting into the core of the 80's here. I can only reveal a few songs without the spoiling the fun. here are some more 1985 extras that made my top 30. 29. Tarzan Boy - Baltimora (BB #13) (DOC #1)Here is a classic Italo hit you guys probably forgot about? It says Billboard peak of #13? I don't recall that, but I do recall this being my favorite song for one week. 28. Change - John Waite (BB #54) (DOC #3)John Waite was one of my favorite rock vocalists. From The Babys ,to his 90's Glam band; Bad English. This song was originally from late 1982, but was rereleased for the "Vision Quest" soundtrack. Both times it failed to crack the Top 40, but it was a big Rock format, radio hit throughout the 80's. I loved this song so much, I also brought it back for top 10 action. This is the original 1983 music video 27. Perfect Way - Scritti Politti (BB #11) (DOC #1)British Sophistipop/Synthpop Band, that many consider a one hit wonder. There highest Hot 100 peak was #11 in 1985. Another great song that missed Billboard's top 100. I took it to #1 for one week. This one also had a swift chart run on my weekly charts. 28-17-15-14-11- 10-9-7-2-1-6-15-22-23-off 26. Tenderness - General Public (BB #39) (DOC #2)Another British New Wave band that had big success on my personal charts way before they changed their name from , English Beat to General Public. The U.S HOT 100 never knew hot to appreciate them ,and let all there great songs slip through their fingers. 25. Call Me - Go West ( BB #54) (DOC #4)..and yet another British band who found a home on my charts. Go West were a sophistipop band, consisting of Pter Cox and Richard Drummie. You could call them the Hall & Oates of England. Peter Cox was the one with the great vocals and Richard Drummie took the ,silent partner ,on guitars position. Anyway, I love this band so much, I am still charting them today. - Tarzan Boy was another Italo disco hit in 1985 back home as well, and a personal chart-topper. I remember buying the 45 PM (cream color, I believe it was EMI's label) that included an instrumental version of it. My mom loved this one, as did I, and still do :) Apparently this song had great longevity and only managed to peak in 1986 in the US, so I guess it has more points for the 1986 yearend chart. - Tenderness was a song that peaked in the top 5 of my personal and our country chart, but in 1984 :) Now I'll take some time to share some songs from classic artists that either had their last visits in the charts or in their breakout solo eras. Some big and minor hits here: - Centerfield (John Fogerty): After CC Revival, John's breakout solo era only came with the Centerfield album. Back home, he had two top 25s with The Old Man Down the Road (high video rotation, too), and Rock and Roll Girls, and a chart-topper with Centerfield. Similar peaks in my personal chart as well. This song passed the test of time, and we can still hear it in our retro radio stations (even though we know none about this sport lol) - Just Another Night (Mick Jagger) - Dancing in the Street (Mick Jagger and David Bowie) Following the success of State of Shock, JAN became a personal top 5 and country top 10. It didn't have much longevity in the 1980s though... I rediscovered it and downloaded it earlier this decade and have kept it in my playlist (good instrumentation IMO). His duet with David Bowie was a BIG hit back home, with much more longevity as well (although with time, I've put it more in my novelty drawer and not use it as often). Just like with Obsession, the video was another little brick in my own same-sex attraction development, as I felt there was a strong sexual tension between singers.... - Never-Ending Story (Limahl) The song was a minor hit in 1985 back home, after the movie was a BIG hit and stayed in the theaters for many months. In the late 1980s there was some sort revival of minor 1980s hits and this one benefitted from stronger airplay and popularity, becoming one of the 1980s staples nowadays in terms of recurrent airplay. Only in the 2000s I learned that Limahl was the vocalist of Kajagoogoo. Interesting fact of this song is that it purposely starts with fade-in and ends with a fade-out, as this is supposed to reflect that it never really ends or starts - Election Day (Arcadia) Although not as successful as the other Duran Duran spin-off project (Power Station), Simon's recognizable lead vocals took this song to the top 10 in my personal chart and top 5 back home - Cannonball (Supertramp) This was Supertramp's final commercial hit, reaching a low top 20 back home and in my personal chart. I've appreciated its sound and rarity more with time though, and I think it still sounds quite fresh nowadays. - I Need You Tonight (Peter Wolfe) Although not as successful as Lights Out, his second song as a solo artist had some medium rotation in our radio stations back home, while becoming a top 5 in my personal chart. Just like with JAN, I rediscovered it and re-loved it now. It's just pure 80s pop. - Concealed Weapons (The J. Geils Band) This song, the first single that the band released without lead single Peter Wolfe, got quite popular back home at the end of 1984/beginning of 1985, in parallel to Peter Wolfe's hits. It was a personal top 15 but with little longevity. I think it's fun and all, but just not too memorable. - Just As I Am (Air Supply) This was AS' last hit back home (although they did have a comeback in the 1990s in an important radio station and in my personal chart with Goodbye), although not as successful as their previous AC smashes. It still has that AS sound, but it was becoming clear that this sound was on its way out and started to sound dated. It hasn't had that good longevity either... - I Was Born To Love You (Freddie Mercury) This was a minor top 25 hit back home, but it flew to the top 5 of my personal chart. I've always had a soft spot for it, as I like the new wave, sort of disco-isa vibe with the layered vocals, synths, space-like/Gloria-like bridge, etc. He'd later have big success with Living on my Own, but I still like this almost as much (plus the video was top notch). - Monster (Fred Schneider) On the other side of the spectrum in terms of complexity, subtlety and video amazingness, it's this solo track from B-52's frontman. A minor top 30 hit back home and in my personal chart, primarily due to curiosity factor and fun. Song had very little longevity and to be honest replay value --but the video is still a good example of campy, shameless fun!! :) - Everything I Need (Men At Work) This was their final top 30 back home, which barely charted in my personal chart as well. Even though it sort of continued MAW's style of other albums, it just felt too samey and hookless for a lead single. An unfortunate farewell song/album... - Let's Talk About Me (Alan Parsons Project) APP has at least 3 great 1980s classics in my eyes: Games People Play, Time and Eye in the Sky. This one was just OK compared to those other master pieces. It was a top 25 back home and in my chart, with little longevity, and was the last song we ever heard of them. I sort of forget this exists, but I felt it was important to give a shoutout to them..

7 10 13 16 19 20 33 60 65 87 I still have plenty of high ranks, but my gut tells me one of my two lowest remaining will take the crown.

Quite the reveal from 15-11!! 15. Head Over Heels (48): This was a medium-sized hit back home, and a personal top 20, but I did grow to like it more with time, especially around the end-90s. I'm surprised that all 3 TFF songs are in the top 15, and happy that this was the first to leave... but I believe this song in particular is far too high in this RD. 14. Like a Virgin (5): WTF??!!!! Huh?! WOW! This is a huge surprise and a disappointment that so many people ranked this one in their bottom half Melodically speaking, this was sort of Billie Jean's cousin. Madonna showcases her sensual personality here more than in any of her 1980s singles, the melody is strong, and the song may be simple but effective. One thing I'd say is that I hated that the Immaculate Collection used a shortened version that removed part of its charm. Back home the extended version (with the prominent ping-pongy sound) was also popular and a personal favorite. LAV was a multi-week personal and country chart-topper, and one of the biggest songs of the decade and the 1900s. Really disappointed at it missing the top 10 here. 13. Crazy for You (33): Very important song for M, as it showcased another side of her, with honest vocals. I was not too much of a fan of this type of ballad back then, although I've grown to appreciate it. Still, not in my top 15 of M songs. 12. We Belong (12): P-P-P-PERFECT RANKING!! I was a fan of Pat for sure, and this one was a big favorite of mine that year. It was a top 5 back home, and a personal chart-topper and among my top 10 of that year as well. Loved the bright white video and how pretty Pat looked :) This has aged very well with me. Super happy that it made it thus far in this RD, as I thought it was going to leave earlier. As an extra FYI, Spanish diva Paloma San Basilio popularized a Spanish version of this song later in 1985 11. I Feel For You (24): A country top 10 and a personal chart-topper. Loved the 'breakdance' vibe of this one plus the harmonica and of course Chaka's vocals. I was a bit torn on where to rank this, as it could've been a top 20. Happy to see it in the top 20 in the end :) So, I have left: 1, 4, 7, 9, 11, 14, 15, 17, 19, 37 Not too bad, but I'm still pissed that neither Madonna nor Bryan Adams are in the top 10 >:( My songs in the top 20 were big top 10 contenders as well, so I'm quite happy at setting them in the top 10. My #37 however... I mean, it may end up a top 5, but I hope it leaves soon. Sorry

Juanca- Centerfield (John Fogerty) I can honestly say; I never really got into this artist. This had that "La Bamba" intro. "Rock' N Roll Girls" was the one song I remeber from old John Fogerty. - Just Another Night (Mick Jagger) I remember this one and, "Lucky In Love" . I gave both top 40 action, but neither really blew me away. - Dancing in the Street (Mick Jagger and David Bowie) As I'm not a fan of covers per say, this didn't excite me. There was great vocals galor, but this song was a bad bad idea. It was slightly worse than Van Halen's cover. - Never-Ending Story (Limahl) Great song, but for me a big top 20 in 1984. - Election Day (Arcadia) Stay tuned for 1986 - Cannonball (Supertramp) I ashamed to say, this was a first time listen for me, but I did not recall ever hearing this one on the radio, or seeing the MV on MTV. Anyway, this one sounded pretty funky and jazzy. Reminded me a bit of Simply Red. A song like "Money's Too Tight (to Mention) "; which I will come back to when we cover 1986. - I Need You Tonight (Peter Wolfe) This one I do remember. I squeezed it into my 1984 weekly charts. Great pop rock tune. - Concealed Weapons (The J. Geils Band) I think this song got the shaft from the industry. The lead singer was Seth Justman; the same band member responsible for the lyrics of "Centerfold". I vaguly recall this one getting airplay, but I would have liked it a lot more. Especially because the sexy lyrics. - Just As I Am (Air Supply) First time listen for me. This band was ok. They seemed a bit too Disney ballad for me, but I did love the epicness of "Sweet Dreams". - I Was Born To Love You (Freddie Mercury) Another one I didn't remember. I really dug this one. Seems only natural the Freddie's music morphed into the Hi NRG style coming out of the U.K. I also got the "Gloria" vibes, but This reminded of one of my favorite pop songs of all time. "Xanadu" by ELO and Olivia Newton-John. - Monster (Fred Schneider) This guy from B-52's. It basically sounded like a B-52's song. This got some MTV airplay. Pretty cool for a Halloween novelty song. The double meaning of Monster was cool. - Everything I Need (Men At Work) I was always surprised how this band's star faded out after only two albums. I think part of the problem is they literally tried to write the same song over and over and forgot how to take chances like they did on songs like, "Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive'. "be Good Johnny" was also an underrated gem. - Let's Talk About Me (Alan Parsons Project) I'll be honest, but aside form "Eye In The Sky", "Games People Play"(My Personal favorite) and maybe "Stereotomy", I don't recall ever hearing from this band again. This song here, sounded pretty good tho. Something that I would have come across on rock radio format station like KLOS.

As for tonight's reveals; well you pretty much check mated my top 10. let's see..., but I can reveal quite a few missing numbers from my personal year end countdown #20. Obsession - Animotion (DOC #5) (#46 1985) I would say a fair slot for this song. I love the New Wave style of this one. Don't ask me why, but when I first heard it, I thought it was a new Human League song. If a song like this came out these days, it would be a huge song on my weekly charts. #19. Money For Nothing - Dire Straights ( DOC #1) (#5 1985)I'm surprised as fuck, someone actually ranked this higher than me? This was a #1 song on my weekly charts for weeks on end. Came in at #5 for my top 100 of 1985. #18. The Power Of Love - Huey Lewis & The News (DOC #2) (#19 1985)Love this one. I guess this is the highest we have ranked This band's song so far? It comes in one slot higher than were I put it on my top 100 of 1985. #17. Dress You Up - Madonna (DOC #3) (#38 1985)Another classic when Madonna sounded her best. This one made my top 40 of the year. I think the MV deserves exposure, because well, she was a knockout. #16 . Would I Lie To You? - EurythmicsAnother big Top 30 hit on my weekly charts. Kind of surprised it came in this high. The guitars and horns made a great combination. #15 . Head Over Heels - Tears For Fears (DOC #4) (#37 1985)This was the biggest year for Tears For Fears. The big hits were also the ones the Roland sang. This song had such huge epic value in the way it was composed. The pianos, the chorus and the ending. This was the 80's in their mature state. #14 . Like A Virgin
- Madonna (DOC #1) (#2 1985) (#11 1984)This I couldn't believe? Those low ranking for Madonna's best song ever. What a Travesty this song missed the top 10.. Hasn't anyone here seen " Resovior Dogs" :kii: I shot it up to #1 in late 1984 and kept it there well into 1985. Monster Pop song. Anyway, as you all know, this only missed being my #1 because of one song still to come. #13 . Crazy For You
- Madonna (DOC #1) (#16 1985)...and this is her best Pop ballad ever. Also missing the top 10. I sense some Madonna envy here? #12 . We Belong
- Pat BenatarAlso surprised this ong made it this high? Not complaining. the love for female vocals and all, but higher than Madonna. Maybe is this song had been "Heartbreaker" or "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", but its not. #11 . I Feel For You - Chaka KhanThis isn't a bad song per say. I like the melody, but I could never get past that awful intro, "Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan...." There are only three songs from my year end Top 20 that I haven't already revealed. You can consider these extras.18. Lovin' Every Minute Of It - Loverboy (BB #17) ( DOC #2)Let's start off with one of my favorite Rock bands of the 80's. From 1981's "Turn Me Lose" straight through a few years ago; they have never left my chart completely. This was them at their big arena rock sound best ever. A few years later; Def Leppard ,finessed this melody with, "Pour Some Sugar On Me", but the Canadians did it first. ;) 17. Love and Pride - King (BB #55) (UK #2) (DOC #2)We go back to The U.K. with the New Wave band ; King. This song was huge in their home country the second time around rising all the way to #2. Its' hard to find the original MV on youtube but this extended version is just as fierce. Up until this year I was till a strong New Wave Freak. It wasn't up until the late 80's were I went full Glam Metal. 13. Burning Up - Madonna (BB N/A) (DOC #1)1985 was the biggest year for Madonna on my charts. "Burning Up" was the last song I charted from her first album, but stayed in my charts for almost two full years before it finally hit #1. This is easily the one Madonna song, I can call the Fiercest. It's also the most New Wave sounding of her songs. The guitar give the song the massive NRG and went perfect with her vocals. They were not as high on this song, but rather had a sexy, sultry tone; which is what the song called for. A perfect song from start to finish.
