There's plenty of rankdown winners that had no #1 placements. I remember Paramore had "Hard Times", which won without any #1 ranks, and the '97 Country RD that happened roughly a year ago (before I heard of and participated in rankdowns) had a George Strait song win ("Carrying Your Love With Me") without any #1 ranks also. It'll be real interesting if I were to host a rankdown that didn't have any #1 placements for the winner; actually had a close call with the one I'm currently doing reveals for now.

#4 for Raspberry?? I guess itβs just because itβs Prince 's best song and a total masterpiece Fixed 2/2 80s Year-End rankdowns my #3 has won. Should I just start placing my favorite song at #3 instead? And third highest ranker; nice.

By the way, somebody mentioned "Perfect Way" earlier, and that song would have challenged "Don't Lose My Number" for my #1 if it was eligible. Great song! I love the more complex song structure, the piano ditty during the bridge, and everything about the pre-chorus.
I also like "Election Day." It has kind of a brooding, ominous sound to it, and I also have some fond memories associated with the song.

First off; a great #1. The whole top 10 had a little something different in musical vibes. I like that. Second; No one even put The Tears For Fears song at #1, and it becomes the #1 song. I'll never understand how these rankdowns get tallied up, that's why I don't even try doing one. It would be a disaster.

#10. Shout - Tears For Fears (DOC #8) (#70 1985) I like Tears For Fears. They fell right in between Alternative Rock and New Wave. "Songs From The Big Chair" was massive. The four singles wee all big hits on my chart.
#9. Everything She Wants - Wham! (DOC #3) (#22 1985) I love Wham! There songs were always about having a great time. This was a perfect pop song for the 80's. One of my favorite aspects about this song , was it's percussion.
#8. Out Of Touch - Hall & Oates (DOC #3) I'm surprised, but happy at the same time that Hall & Oates came in this high. I managed to squeeze this song onto my 1984 year end chart, bit it was one of those songs I enjoyed throughout the 80's.
#7. Don't You (Forget About Me) - Simple Minds (DOC #1) (#6 1985) This one brings back so many great memories. Particularly "The Breakfast Club" memories. This year the band have released a new album with all new songs. It's called "Walk Between Worlds". One of the singles from that album cracks my top 10 songs of the week.
#6. The Boys Of Summer - Don Henley (DOC #60 (#52 1985) I bet you all would never put the Ataries cover of this song in a top 10? This song is great above all for the lyrics. The Dead head sticker on a cadillac line is priceless.
#5. Smooth Operator - Sade I like this song. It might have been a tad too smooth for kid my age back then, but I do really appreciate it's sultry smoothness these days.
#4. Raspberry Beret - Prince and The Revolution (DOC #2) (#22 1985) 80's lyrics will always be the best. This one was all about the girl with the Raspberry Beret. One of the things I loved about Prince's videos, was his band's image. Real band playing real instruments. Prince on guitar was always the highlight. The guy with the scrubs outfit has been around since "1999".
#3. Careless Whisper - Wham! (DOC #1) (#1 1985) I think George Michael was robbed here. Easily my #1 song for this rankdown, as well, as my own personal top 100 of 1985. This song for me is the best Pop Ballad ever. The lyrics, the vocals, the melody, and that sax. You can't even imagine how many times I have dedicated this song to the honeys of my past.
#2. Take On Me - a-ha (DOC #1) (#10 1985) Superb Synthpop song. This one kicks off my top 10 songs of the year. This song was the first time a Norwegian band hit #1 on Billboard. The keyboards on this song were full fierce Hi-Energy.
#1. Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears For Fears (DOC #2) (#24 1985) I have to say I'm surprised for the love of this band. This is indeed my favorite song by this band. The guitar fade out is awesome. Not many take into consideration that this one was also sung by Curt Smith. Everytime I ask someone; they think it was Roland. Roland's vocals are surely more powerful, and they sort of drown our Curt in the chorus, but Curt sings the verses. Two other great songs from Curt were, "Change" and "Pale Shelter"
So the last three songs I can reveal for you are all in my top 10.
9. Unexpected Lovers - Lime (DOC #1) Lime were a; Husband and Wife, Canadian Hi-Energy disco band, who had many club hits during the 80's. From 1985-1988 Hi-Energy had a strong showing among the Latin crowd. Especially in the dance clubs. This were known as the extended 12's inch single years. This is one of my favorite songs from that era.
4. You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) - Dead Or Alive (BB #11) (DOC #1) (#4 1985) The Hi-Energy vibe continues on my year end chart, with one of the most famous bands from that genre. lead by the flambouyant ,Pete Burns, Dead Or Alive had countless of hits in the club scene. This was their biggest charting single on Billboard. It just came short of Top 10 action at #11. I would have loved to have be able to rank this one in this rankdown. This was my #4 song for the year.
3. Go West - We Close Our Eyes (BB #41) (DOC #1) (#3 1985) And at #3 is a band we ran into earlier with "Call Me". This was a top 5 hit in The U.k. and a huge #1 on my charts. The music video for "We Close Our Eyes" is something of a classic among 80's die hard fans. This song just missed the top 40 on Biilboard Hot 100. I guess they were saving the band, for the 90's, when they hit big with hits; "King Of Wishful Thinking" and "Faithful".

10. Shout (14): A personal and country chart-topper, with good longevity. I really liked the less mainstream instrumentation and structure of this song, and its overall epic feeling. 9. Everything She Wants (15): This was Wham's third personal chart-topper in a row and another top 5 back home (and my second favorite song sung by George). I loved the music throughout the song, but especially the last couple of minutes, the sort of 2 bridges that happen with the big OOhhhh and synth sounds. A mix of funky vibe with strong emotional vocal performance. To be honest, these songs in 11-20 slot could all have been in my top 10. VERY hard to choose. 8. Out Of Touch (9): YAY!!! I really thought this wasn't gonna make the top 10. This and Maneater have always been my favorites from H&O, and they alternate at #1 :) A personal and country chart-topper, with a great 12" version as well. 7. Don't You (Forget About Me) (17): Another big hit of the year back home and in my personal chart, with great longevity as well. 6. The Boys Of Summer (7): I've always LOVED this song. It has a moody, nostalgic vibe that caught to me from the beginning. Have great memories of beach days with parents and brother and road trips in the 1980s and even later in the 2000s and 2010s. The fact that this has been more or less successfully covered in both rock and dance charts attests to its strengths. Another uniquely sounding pop-rock from 1985, a personal chart-topper and country top 5. 5. Smooth Operator (11): This was 'just' a top 10 back home and in my personal chart, as it had a more adult vibe. However, with time I progressively increased my appreciation of the track (especially the version with the unedited first full verse), its musical complexities, the subdued but sexy vocals and that musical crescendo leading to the unforgettable sax bridge. Great to see this in the top 5 actually! 4. Raspberry Beret (37): This was a country top 5 and personal chart-topper. So I like this song, don't get me wrong :) but I've always considered it a good, just not excellent song as several others in this RD. Its strength to me relies on the chorus, whereas the verses were and still are a bit meh to me. The music and chorus are great, though. 3. Careless Whisper (1): Oh well, another disappointment here. It's as if When Doves Cry had ended up at #3 in the 1984 RD. This is THE quintessential 1980s ballad in my opinion, and the clear winner of this RD. A HUGE hit back home, and among the top 10 of the multiple 1900s rankings that happened around Y2K back home. Personally, my favorite GM song and personal song of the year. The original version that starts with slow instrumentation and almost a-capella chorus, then followed by that unique sax is A+, as is the strong bridge. Superb vocals, and music with some resemblance to Latin ballads make this one of the best songs I've ever heard. 2. Take On Me (4): I bought this 45 RPM as everyone back home loved this song :) A country and personal chart-topper that has remained a favorite for years as well. A-ha would end up having 3 other chart-toppers and a few other top 10s in my personal chart. TOM however is one of those songs that scream 1980s. Good to see them this high up in the RD. 1. Everybody Wants To Rule The World (19): Another strong top 20 song for me that started my love for TFF. A country and personal chart-topper, which was followed by Shout, Head Over Heels, Change and Pale Shelter --the latter, a song that was only top 15 but gained longevity and became one of my favorite TFF songs in the end. This is a pretty good song, but a bit surprised this ended up winning the RD. Not too bad of a surprised, but am still bummed about some other songs in my top 10.

I didn't participate in this one but I am pleased with the number one song. I prefer "Shout" but I also love "Everybody...". The 12" version is sick! I play it all the time.

YES, my #1 won. This song is just amazing. I love those opening notes and just the production, along with the main singers voice. It's the reason why it's perhaps my favorite song ever, besides Clocks and Mr. Brightside.
