Congrats to Gaga on her win! She did not deserve to win for best actress (sorry! She was good, but not great), but I have a feeling this will help her get plenty more roles and nominations in the future.
I'm more excited for new Gaga music in 2019 -- bring us that new sound, Gags!

The first thing that pops out to me is she’s had a lot of plastic surgery already for someone who’s only 31.

SAG will be more indicative of where the Actress race lies. I would say Gaga could sneak in there if Glen and Colman split the vote enough, but I think Glenn is definitely the most likely to take it as she gave a terrific performance this year and she has lost a number of times before this year. Song is where Gaga will get the gold. I think voters will probably even look at it as that is where Gaga gets her Oscar and Glen will get her’s for Actress.

That's neither here nor there but just thought I'd update you on that. But uhh..."a lot of plastic surgery" is aggressive? She's clearly had her nose bump removed but to say that she's had a lot of work is quite a stretch.

Why this guy has to touch EVERY subject hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=314728&title=GREIN-ON-GLOBES%3A-HOW-NERVOUS-SHOULD-GAGA-BE%3FEverybody thought Lady Gaga was all but assured of winning the Oscar for her performance in A Star Is Born, but last night (1/6) she lost the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture—Drama to Glenn Close for The Wife. How nervous should she be about her Oscar chances? Pretty nervous. And what do Cher, Mary J. Blige and Judy Garland have to do with this? Ah, let me tell you. Close has amassed six Oscar nominations. She has yet to win. No other living actor has amassed so many noms without winning. For her most iconic role, Alex Forrest in 1987's Fatal Attraction, Close lost to another megastar singer/entertainer and tabloid magnet who proved to be a surprisingly skilled actress, Cher in Moonstruck. There will be some sentiment that Close should be honored before another pop star swoops in and takes the award. When the Oscar nominations are announced on 1/22, Gaga is certain to be nominated for both Best Actress and Best Original Song. She would be only the second person to be nominated for acting and songwriting in the same year, following Blige last year for Mudbound and its song, "Mighty River." (Blige was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, not lead, as Gaga will be, but it still counts.) If Gaga wins the Oscar for Best Actress, she'll do what Garland didn't—win an Oscar for A Star Is Born. For the 1954 version, Garland lost to Grace Kelly for the The Country Girl. If Gaga loses the Oscar, she'll become the second superstar singer/entertainer to lose the Oscar for playing the star on the rise in this classic film property. (Barbra Streisand, who played the role in between Garland and Gaga, wasn't even nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress.) I think the main reason A Star Is Born performed poorly at the Golden Globes is that their voters resented the way Bradley Cooper and the Star team insisted on competing in the drama categories, rather than musical or comedy. (The 1976 version competed in musical or comedy and won five awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Actor for Kris Kristofferson.) In part, this may have been the Globes' way of saying "You can come in and push your weight around, but we kind of like the way we do things." If this Star had competed in the musical or comedy lane, Gaga might very well have won Best Actress, defeating Olivia Colman in The Favourite. But then we wouldn’t have realized that we have a nail-biter in the Oscar race, where we thought we were headed for a coronation.

If she was nominated for Best Actress in the Musical/Comedy field, I think she would have defeated Colman and won. It was stupid for them to put this film up in the drama category.

It doesn’t not make sense for this to be drama though.

Considering the subject matter, it belonged in the musical comedy category. It was stupid of them.

I think it's kind of "melodrama"?
Anyways, amazing climb for Shallow on Spotify, #12 globally, it's biggest day in weeks.

Well, this clearly wasn't a Comedy. And didn't we already have the "why this isn't a Musical" discussion? Or was that in the ASIB thread itself?

I like to think she wouldn't have beat Colman either. Colman was incredible and has won numerous awards already.

See, I could have sworn we had that discussion in this thread too. I thought it was just my imagining that. Jeff Bridges won the Best Actor in a Drama for "Crazy Heart" back in 2009. That was a drama with musical performances grounded in reality throughout in the same manner as "Star". Why Fox submitted Rami in the Drama category instead of Musical / Comedy, where Joaquin Phoenix won for "Walk The Line" in 2006 remains a mystery. I feel like Bradley's chances of winning could have increased had Rami been in the other category. If Glenn truly deserved the Best Actress in a Drama award for "The Wife", cool. Maybe I'll check it out sometime. However, an award meant for a singular role should never go to an actor / actress who's been nominated numerous times but never won "just because they've earned it by their overall body of work". That's what all those lifetime achievement awards like the Cecil B. DeMille Award for the Globes and the Honorary Award for the Oscars are for.

No one knows if that's why Glenn Close won and it's wrong for you to imply that it was. She is an extremely talented and supreme actress.

I don't think Gaga has a chance for a BAFTA.

Viola came out of nowhere for this one. They are totally snubbing Toni Collette.
Even if Gaga does not win the Oscar for best actress (which is probable), being nominated is awesome. She's surrounded by hugely talented and experienced actresses. That's quite an accomplishment.

Widows generally was super overrated by critics and Viola gave a rather uninspired if technically good performance.

I'd be over the moon if she is nominated.. her chances of winning are super slim. The fact that she's even considered is a victory.
