I'm not gonna quote anyone or point any fingers specifically, but please, PLEASE let's not turn into any run-of-the-mill negative comment thread on either Facebook, YouTube or Twitter, about whatever particular artist, album or song. We've established that it's more than natural for us to voice our discontentment with certain songs becoming hits if we personally think they're not great (always a subjective thing, but we're human, we can't always be objective, certainly not with musical taste), but let's not start calling this or that person/project a flop, left and right - it's petty, unnecessary and oftentimes misguided. Nothing bothers me more than someone who actively hates an artist. Why even pay them that much attention? You can build up your favorites without tearing down others. Heck, I even regreted saying Drake is mediocre, or generalizing his catalog.

Welp... I'm convinced. Converted even. That video was amazing, mad props for Drake. The song is still faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar from being a favorite of mine, but I'm no longer remiss about it being #1. Still faaaaaaaar from Hold On, We're Going Home.

This isn't really meant for this thread but I'm not sure where else to post it - but where is the Jennifer Lopez thread? I don't see an Artist Discussion thread or a thread for her new single in any of the formats. I did a search and I'm not seeing any posts since January 5th and don't see any that were in her threads.
Probably just missing something, but I'm at a loss.

There's also no guarantee that just because something does well in streaming or sales that radio listeners want to listen to it. You're talking about three different demographics with not that large of an overlap.
Just think about how many people stream but don't listen to the radio and how many people only consume music through the radio. They have different tastes.

If Pop Radio ate up Hotline Bling and One Dance, they'll eat this one up as well. I agree with fhas though in a way, Radio, especially Pop Radio carry tracks for too long. I am so sick of Perfect and Havana and I can't believe the GP is still vibing with these old ass songs, but Shape Of You is still gaining spins after a year of being out so it's not shocking.

The difference is that tracks were enough popier to top the pop chart. God Plans has nothing pop, it probably will have a run as a rockstar had. Top 5 on Pop at best.

It also takes a bit for songs to rise at radio. Songs can be instant hits in sales and streaming, but radio takes weeks and more so months.

That's my point: radio should be playing new songs way more often than they're doing. Perfect and Havana are kinda old. I saw a graphic (ATRL if I'm not mistaken) that shows how slow (in terms of playing new songs) US radio is compared to UK radio.

I bet listening habits in the UK are different too. Looking at Spotify's data, I would guess that at least in regard of streaming, the entire world is just about as slow as the US in term of turnover.

Glad "Shape of You" is overcoming finding continued success by following Billboard's sick and twisted games fair and smart rules that truly embody the concept of the Hot 100 being “hot.” Fixed it for you.

Some songs just really takes time to grow into it and I think that reflects a lot on radio. Heck even streaming shows people don't get easily sick of a song And now that I'm transitioning to the adult contemporary radio target market lol I tend to stick to 'old' songs longer than I used to when I was younger

Wait, does sales actually mean song listens on iTunes? Or just actual sales? What if someone buys a song but never listens to it? Does that count?

Wait, does sales actually mean song listens on iTunes? Or just actual sales? What if someone buys a song but never listens to it? Does that count? Sales are just that. Sales. People using money in exchange for a file of a song. How a person chooses to use that file is not taken into account. A person could download God's Plan from iTunes and never listen it while another person downloads it and listens to it 100 times and they're both counted the same: 1 sale during the week of whenever they purchased the song. Listening data isn't tracked by iTunes or any other digital retailer.

Looking at Spotify's data, I would guess that at least in regard of streaming, the entire world is just about as slow as the US in term of turnover. And the only reason the UK charts have faster turnover at the moment is because of the ACR rules applied last year (where the streaming ratio is doubled after 10 weeks on the chart and 3 consecutive weeks of decline).

If Last.fm were to be added to the Hot 100, it would be under streaming, not sales, and even then, it would have to only be plays directly from the website because plays from Spotify can get scrobbled to Last.fm therefore causing double points for the same stream. Also, not everyone that has iTunes uses Last.fm.

I can understand streaming being important and factored in, the truth is we gotta get with the times, but isn't it true that if you start a song and immediately skip to the next one with only one second played, then it still counts as a stream and adds to the numbers?

Well, at least on Spotify, you have to play at least 30 seconds of a song for it to be counted as a stream. I believe Apple Music is also around the same too.
