Don't underestimate the unity of the rock community. When we find a worthy cover, we spread it around through word of mouth. It's how I learned of it, and it's how many others did.

^I wouldn't go that far in my case. But I do think that Stay was better and that it wasn't necessary to auto-tune Marren Morris' voice, which is the same beef I have with Dua Lipa's voice in New Rules.

No, you're not alone in that, I've heard it a few times already and it has yet to grow on me. It reminds me too much of "Stay", which annoys me. I loved "Stay", but this just makes me feel like there's some credit to all those posts of people claiming there's a formula to producing hit pop songs and we all absent-mindedly buy into it.

I think I probably would've think of "The Middle" as just another generic EDM song were it not for Maren Morris, who sounds pretty great here.

Since Blurred Lines, greedy artists that no one has heard of and or are irrelevant have been coming out of the cemetery to sue every song that may sound a bit similar to their song. It's very ridiculous, especially the number they chose to sue for, 300 million? Really? We Can't Stop hasn't even sold that much. 

It's funny to think about a few decades ago artists would outright steal complete songs from other artists and they didn't get any repercussions, Micheal Jackson admitted to Daryl Hall while recording We Are The World in '85 that he jacked the Hall & Oat's song No Can Do for Billie Jean. Quincy Jones recently stated that Micheal stole that same song from Donna Summer, and let's not forget he burned his friendship with Paul McCartney after purchasing the entire Beatles catalog. Not to blame everything on MJ, but the point I'm trying to make is that back then everyone stole from each other, listen to hits from the 50's to the 80's, there's a lot of songs that sound similar to each other. 

Marvin Gaye's family acts all innocent and shit and tries to blame Pharrell and Robin Thicke for jacking Got To Give It Up, but their father took a lot of music from other artists at the time as well. But that's how music is, everyone takes from everyone. Nothing is original, and that's not a new phenomenon, it's been happening for decades. I still can't believe that Blurred Lines lawsuit was a real thing and Marvin Gaye's family actually won, its pretty ridiculous.

A huge #1 debut most likely. I'm not good at predicting the future but I definitely see GP being huge for a long time and looking at what we have now, none of it (besides maaaybe The Middle) is looking like it could overtake GP.

There is? I mean, sure, people are interested, but enough hype to catapult an Ariana Grande song to #1 on streaming? She's never been #1 on streaming (outside of "Bang Bang"). And let's face it, to have a song debut at #1 these days, you gotta have enormous streaming out of the gate. She can probably easily snag a #1 debut in digital sales (but, like, woop-dee-doo, it'll be like 150k), and good first week airplay (let's estimate something like 25-30 million AI). But I don't see her pulling in enormous streaming out of the gate. Depending on the climate at the time, she might get #1 on Spotify for a day or so like Taylor did with LWYMMD, but she'll ultimately come in second or third in her first week of streaming, and depending on the climate, those numbers will probably only get her a 2-4 debut.

And that's if the song is good. If we get another "Focus" quality lead single, then lower numbers all around.

Some of it is probably that I spend a lot more time around popheads and she's treated like a goddess over there so it probably seems like a bigger single to me than to someone who focuses more on other genres, but it wouldn't surprise me. She's also a sales and radio darling and if it doesn't debut at number one, God's Plan will probably be weak enough that it would be taken over in the weeks following the release, considering it's not even speculated to be released until April.

Let's also not forget about "Psycho." Its streaming is holding very steady, airplay is rapidly increasing, and sales aren't bad. I feel like it's more likely "Psycho" backs into #1 as "God's Plan" falls than for Ariana Grande to debut at #1. Especially considering "Psycho"'s video is still to be released.

I thought the surest horse to bet on right now was another Drake song, from the album he's apparently about to drop. God, I hope a more infectious song of his dethrones "God's Plan", if that's truly our last resource. I could listen to "God's Plan" all the time and still not have it grow on me, what a bore.
