Don't expect Ed's smash hits to continue after Perfect, at least for a while. His next and probably last single from this album is either "Happier" or "Galway Girl". The first one doesn't scream smash hit, and the second one was already a single everywhere else but the US so a lot of people already know it and are burned on it. After that, he claims that his next album isn't going to be mainstream. tldr; enjoy "Perfect" while it lasts. How does an artist decide whether or not their album will be mainstream? Is it really up to them? He can decide to work with other genres that are customarily less radio-friendly but still put out a hit album simply because the fans are eagerly awaiting it, no? But maybe that does matter. Beyoncé has a huge following and impact still, but Lemonade, despite its success and reception, wasn't what you'd call mainstream. Its sole top 10 hit was a debut at #10. I guess the genre and the lack of promotion do matter, maybe that's what he means when he says the next one won't be "mainstream". "The next record that I’m making is not a pop album. The reason it’s not a pop album is people expect you to come and the next album they’re going to be like 'it has to be bigger than 'Shape of You' and it has to sell more than this,' but if I control it and go 'here’s a lo-fi record that I really f***ing love,' my fans are gonna be like 'Yay!', and the pop world are gonna be like 'oh well, maybe the next one.'
"If the next album does, like, 2 or 1 [million], or 500,000, it’s not a failure because I’ve made an album where I’m not trying to get there, so it’s not a failure. No one’s going to be like, 'that’s a flop.' They’re going to be like, 'that’s what he wants to do.'"Basically already doing damage control in case the thing flops. I'm not saying he's gonna fade into oblivion but don't expect record breaking hits soon-ish.

Despite those comments, Ed Sheeran's next album won't be some sort of MGMT-level departure that removes him from the mainstream. I can't guarantee the quality but expect him to post huge numbers, regardless of whatever artistic journey he thinks he's going on. jayhawk1117, when you said Ed is cementing himself as the decade's 2nd biggest male artist - is #1 Drake, Bruno Mars, or Justin Bieber? I'd think those 3 would still be on top.

I don't think Ed's debut album was mainstream either, and it was massive..he is definitely the biggest male artist WW. His first mainstream song was "Sing".

The Middle becomes Zedd's highest peaking song on the Hot 100, as it moves 8-6 and surpasses the #7 peaking Stay.
Edit: I forgot about Break Free, but it becomes his highest peaking song as the lead artist

Edit: I forgot about Break Free, but it becomes his highest peaking song as the lead artist Stay only peaked at #7 but reached 33k points and was a 6-week #1 on Pop Songs + 1-week #1 on HDS. One of the unluckiest songs in recent years.

Here's my weekly compendium of all the news we got, spanning the reveal to the article to the Chart History; some stuff that Melinda didn't get to, namely a litany of debuts from Yachty and Logic. Also, I checked all the songs from 35-50 that were at risk of recurrency, and surprisingly most of them survived, including Sorry Not Sorry despite its precarious position.

It's like comparing Usher and Eminem in the 2000s, I'll choose the guy with the biggest hits, but if both release a song in the same week, with the same promo, video, etc. I think the rapper (2010s Drake, 2000s Eminem) would win easily.

Is it possible that Apple will eventually stop iTunes so all users will just do Apple Music? Obviously not anytime soon but I wonder if they are thinking that on the horizon especially for music. Podcasts and purchase of TV shows and movies via iTunes I guess could stay.
Anyway, God's Plan reign is just unstoppable. Perfect's hold at #2 is very impressive. It never did that well on Spotify right? So I think having the duet and symphony version probably still helping to remain strong all this time

The sooner Perfect dies the sooner I can listen to the radio again....
Also, I may have expressed this before but I don't get God's Plan. Of all of Drake's major hits, this one is the most confusing.

God's Plan and rockstar before that were the songs that I never thought would be long running #1 hits. I also don't get the appeal but maybe it's because I'm now 30 and out of touch what the young millennials and next generation of music fans are connecting to

Drake's about twice as prominent as any solo male artist on the Hot 100 this decade. Bruno is nowhere near him in terms of combined weeks on the charts, or number of hits. And that's without counting either of their feature spots. Although the hits he does have are quite big. Maybe Bruno Mars if we're only talking time in the Top 10. And yeah, Bruno Mars just isn't an artist like Drake, Kendrick, Weeknd, Beyonce, J. Cole, Bieber, etc, who has huge hype at the beginning of their release. Here's a breakdown I did for each of the artist's careers: genius.com/discussions/306576-Career-analysis-drakegenius.com/discussions/314628-Career-analysis-bruno-mars

Even two or three years ago my listening reasonably aligned with the charts. I am not really enjoying most of what is popular currently. (Not even most of the pop!)

I can totally see why God's Plan is a big hit: the post chorus is exceptionally well done and the start of second verse is one of his best: "She said, "Do you love me?" I tell her, "Only partly" I only love my bed and my momma, I'm sorry"
Love it!
