Hint for 42LEAKAGE!!!!! Host OpinionThe club mix of this is epic, while the original is alright but nothing special. If this is the Deborah duet, I agree. Hex Hector, Thunderpuss, Jon Peters and Junior Vasquez went to town with most of her late 90s singles. Attachment Deleted

Bye IT ISNT IT WASNT! Definitely not a fav of mine. But I can see why Aretha was hating on Whitney during the recording session, Nippy’s vocals were pure fire.
I’m guessing the next song is either Same Script Different Cast or Million Dollar Bill?

I liked it but I haven't listened to it in ages.
ILTY has held up better to me.

Normally remixes can save some of her blander material, but even that couldn't save "I Didn't Know My Own Strength." Bye.

Hint for 41
Host Opinion I don't hate this and I enjoy the energy and sass behind it. However, it's not as strong as much of the rest of Whitney's discography.
Whitney Spotlight "After We Make Love" This lovely ballad, produced by Michael Masser, is the penultimate track on the oft overlooked I'm Your Baby Tonight album.

I appreciate I Didn’t Know My Own Strength for the meaning behind it, especially when, at the time, Whitney was addressing her personal issues and claimed to have them behind her. But I was never a big fan of the song overall. Not shocked at its ranking.
I’m guessing #41 is My Name Is Not Susan?

I really hope not but I've been prepared for MNINS to leave early so I won't be shocked. I don't get all the hate for the Aretha duet lol

I think her vocal on “IDKMOS” feels more lived in and earned than the one on “ILTY.”

Ok I get why the Aretha duet and IDKMOS would be out early despite my liking them, but WTF is "Whatchulookinat" doing this low!?!

There are worse songs still in, but I'm not sad to see it go.

I was obsessed with Whatchulookinat when it first leaked, and I was really glad she came back with something upbeat. There was something different about the original leak, I liked it a lot more than what was released.

OH, good to see two more of my bottom 5 out: Someone For Me, which was just generic AC filler and one of the most meh singles in her discography (how come Love That Man ended up lower than this?); and It Isn't.... such a big disappointment for such a big combo of talents!! I mean, at least the beat is Gypsy-Woman-cool and WH has great vocals, but that chorus isn't, wasn't and ain't never gonna be good! I almost ranked Own Strength a bit higher than #44, as I do appreciate the feeling behind the lyrics but I couldn't overcome that 'cru-u-umble' in the chorus and the extremely weak vocals (sorry), which are even more notorious given the intensity of the production in both the ballad and the remix versions... NOW... WTF is this low ranking for Watchulookinat??!! I hadn't listened to it in quite some time and it still sounds good! Like this could've been a hit if sung by any younger artist at that time. I was puzzled at how bad it flopped, coming after the successful My Love Is Your Love Era, and with this bop. It was a personal top 5 and I just couldn't get what was going on. So was this flopping primarily because of that shitty talk show or her scandals or what? And what are you guys smoking, ranking this lower than Fine? In terms of the extras, wow! I really liked Hold Up The Light!! I'm not much into gospel stuff, but that song was great!! And I Bow Out is also a solid track. I like it more than I Learned from the Best actually. That Ray J song, however, is ewwwww. That may be the worst song I've heard over the past couple of months

It’s always been so obvious that Whitney wrote Whatchulookinat. :kii:

I have always hated that Clive discouraged Whitney from writing on her own songs. I hate that one of her few co-writes is Whatchulookinat even more. It's not that Clive was correct, it's just that Whitney needed to be encouraged to write at her peak, when she had her pick of top-notch collaborators who could guide her through the songwriting process and polish her output. LA Reid didn't know or care how to handle an older legacy act so he just let Whitney go in the studio and do whatever.
IIRC she has a credit on Queen of the Night - that's a positive example of a writing session with others turning out a good result. (Ironically enough, Reid was part of that.)

I have just set the woods on fire outside my house in tribute to "Whatchulookinat" just in case y'all were wondering what that smell was.

Here's a summary of what's left now that we're 10 songs in.
80s: 12/15 90s: 20/23 00s: 08/12
Whitney Spotlight "Like I Never Left" This breezy mid-tempo was the first to leak from the I Look to You sessions. Akon's production and melody suit Whitney's latter-day voice quite well.

I like the demo version of "Like I Never Left" better than the final product. Those extra high notes at the end weren't needed.
BTW - Does anyone have the demo version? I'd love to have it!

I actually loved Whatchulookinat when it was first released, but as the years went on I grew bored of it. Don’t get me wrong I don’t think it’s one of her worst songs, but it just doesn’t live up to her other singles on the list.
If it had been up to me, I would’ve released Unashamed and Tell Me No as the first and second singles from Just Whitney.

Bummer Something In Common is out so early. FWIW Wavey✨️ I would have ranked it top 10 easily. More importantly though, I’m waiting to see ”Lover For Life” receive some sort of shout out...surprised to see it wasn’t in the rankdown! Her greatest album track, it’s on most karaoke playlists!

This is a singles rankdown. "Lover for Life" is fucking amazing, but it was never a single.

Are you ready for some more...?
Whitney Spotlight "Take Good Care of My Heart" The (IMHO stronger but still weak AF) second duet with Jermaine Jackson from her debut. A smooth mid-tempo.

Hint for 40Host OpinionAn okay attempt at recreating past magic that ultimately falls apart. The editing at the climax especially ruins the magic, but it's still not bad. Whitney Spotlight"Feels So Good" This track is the B-side to "I'm Your Baby Tonight" - a rare treat indeed!
