I watched her speech a bit earlier and it really hit me. As an Eastern European Immigrant who grew up wishing they had a different name, birthplace, and dialect that people didn't repeatedly point out until I was out of my teens, and who had to learn self-validation in so many painful and difficult ways, I really wish there had been someone around like her when I was growing up instead of things like Amy Lee.

I have a good amount of hope that she will be the first UK female act since Adele to properly expand the success of their first album with their second.

I remember reading somewhere that she didn't really grow to like her own name until much later in life. She wanted to change it for the better part of her childhood and teenage years because it sounded different.

Her first name means "love" in Albanian, which was her grandmother's suggestion. Lipa explained "Now I’m proud of it. Now I am. But when I was growing up all I wanted was to be called Hannah, Sarah, Ella… anything normal. Because with Dua you had to explain: I’m from Kosovo."

Like I said I feel like her speech had a nice point and she was getting there before they cut her.

Omg, everything. Having classmates impart a dialect or accent onto me where there was none or it's not distinct enough to routinely make fun of me. But alas, they did. Beginning every school year with the unbearable cruelty of ROLL CALL when a teacher would make mincemeat of my name and I'd have to be like, "yes, I am the person who has the name you cannot even begin to pronounce so please just call me Brian." I was a little kid! Can't forget when a high school teacher said my name is the sound an immigrant makes when they fall off a boat. Which is extremely funny, not gonna lie. But how fucked. And don't even get me started on when Borat came out. :cries: Anyway, thank you for existing Dua!!!!
