Post Malone Breaks Record For Most Simultaneous Top 20 Hot 100 Hits, Besting The Beatles & J. Cole News By Xander Zellner | May 07, 2018 5:25 PM EDT
Post Malone performs onstage during 2018 Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival Weekend 1 at the Empire Polo Field on April 14, 2018 in Indio, Calif. Natt Lim/Getty Images for Coachella
Nine songs infuse the top 20, as all 18 tracks from 'beerbongs & bentleys' hit the Hot 100. As Post Malone celebrates his first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated May 12) as well as the biggest streaming week ever for an album, the rapper/singer concurrently breaks the record for the most simultaneous top 20 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart.
Post Malone -- whose sophomore effort beerbongs & bentleys opened with 461,000 equivalent album units, according to Nielsen Music -- lands nine songs in the top 20 of the Hot 100, shattering the previous record of six, which was shared by The Beatles and J. Cole. The Beatles held the record for 54 years, as they charted six songs in the top 20 on charts dated April 11 and April 18, 1964. J. Cole tied the mark just last week (on the chart dated May 5), fueled by the No. 1 Billboard 200 bow of his latest album, KOD.
Malone concurrently breaks the record for the most simultaneous top 40 Hot 100 hits: 14. A week ago, J. Cole charted 10 songs in the region, passing the prior high of nine notched each by Cardi B, Drake and Kendrick Lamar. All 18 tracks from beerbongs & bentleys grace the Hot 100, led by "Psycho," featuring Ty Dolla $ign, at No. 2. "Better Now" debuts at No. 7 and Malone's former eight-week No. 1 "Rockstar," featuring 21 Savage, rebounds 32-8, making him the 18th act in the Hot 100's 59-year history with at least three simultaneous top 10s.
"Better Now" earns Post Malone his third top 10 debut, following "Psycho" and "Rockstar," which both bowed at No. 2. Here’s a look at all of 18 of Post Malone’s songs on the new, May 12-dated Hot 100. (All are debuts, except where noted.) Hot 100 Rank, Title No. 2, "Psycho," feat. Ty Dolla $ign (up from No. 5) No. 7, "Better Now" No. 8, "Rockstar," feat. 21 Savage (up from No. 32) No. 11, "Paranoid" No. 14, "Rich & Sad" No. 15, "Spoil My Night," feat. Swae Lee No. 16, "Ball for Me," feat. Nicki Minaj No. 17, "Stay" No. 20, "Same Bitches," feat. G-Eazy & YG No. 23, "Zack and Codeine" No. 24, "Over Now" No. 29, "Takin’ Shots" No. 34, "Candy Paint" (re-entry/new peak) No. 40, "92 Explorer" No. 46, "Otherside" No. 47, "Blame It on Me" No. 57, "Sugar Wraith" No. 73, "Jonestown (Interlude)" With 18 total tracks currently on the Hot 100, Malone becomes just the third act to tally at least that many songs on the chart at once. Drake holds the record for the most simultaneous entries with 24, and has logged at least 18 tracks on the Hot 100 in four distinct weeks. The Weeknd landed 18 tracks on the Hot 100 in December 2016 as his album Starboy started atop the Billboard 200.

Biggest chart opening of all time and biggest box office opening of all time were released on the same day. Very interesting.
And both happen to be records that are constantly getting re-broken due to changes in the industry.
But the charts happen to be in the middle of a very rapid and tumultuous change. In the last 2.5 years, the record has been broken 4 times. 1. Views. 2. Starboy 3. More Life 4. Beerbongs and Bentleys
And it's likely to be broken many more times in the next few years.
But by the mid 2020s, it will likely be broken a lot less. As growth in streaming starts to plateau.

So who are all the artists who have had 17-25 weeks in a row at #1? Would Drake and BEP be the only artists to get 17 or more? Usher had 19 straight weeks with Yeah and Burn, interrupted for a week by I BELIEVE (Fantasia Barrino) then had another 3 weeks at #1 with Burn and Confessions Part II

Bodak Yellow would have recharted if it was in the Top 50, but it wasn't, You missed my point. Billboard only lets recurrent songs back in during their active runs if they're boosted for a significant reason (Uptown Funk), are getting a late radio run (The Fighter), or are challenging/beat their peak (Candy Paint). With its #1 peak, Bodak Yellow doesn't match reason #3 (it would've returned around the lower top 40 from what we can tell), its radio wasn't gaining so it fails reason #2, and an album bomb alone doesn't satisfy reason #1.

Uptown Funk climbed above #25 so it returned for one week
Otherwise if a song climbs above 50 or 25 and is gaining in more than one metric then the song returns
The challenging/beating peak thing seems new?

The thing I find interesting that I feel doesn't get acknowledged enough, or maybe people don't even realize, is that records keep getting broken but that's only due to the change in how the charts are tabulated first and foremost. Things may be more accurate than ever before because access to listening habits is now traceable but if anything, these new chart stats display the weaknesses of charts before now.

But I think it has more to do with the technology than the charts themselves. We've never lived in a time where this many people could immediately have whatever new music they want delivered straight to their pockets for free. I'm not sure if sales from decades past could ever compete. And I know that radio obviously couldn't.

Whitney Houston had 7 in a row. Whitney had 7 consecutively released singles between Oct 1985 and Apr 1988 that hit #1; they didn't go to #1 right after each other without any other songs in between. The Beatles had 3 singles in 1964 that went to #1 right after each other, "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "She Loves You," and ''Can't Buy Me Love." To date, no one else has ever done this (although Usher came close). Ugh I still wishing Usher got that... American Idol ruined everything during its peak... like Carrie Underwood stopping Mariah Carey from having the first 15 week #1.

I just listened to Better Now and it seems like it has the potential to be a pretty solid pop hit, and especially since it's the highest debut from BB&B, people seem to be liking it. Could this be a challenger for the next #1?

Since I've been gone for like, the past 3 or so weeks, can anyone please remind me what has happened while I was out for 3 weeks? Drake has been #1 for those 3 weeks. If anybody else ever disappears for 3 weeks, it's best to just assume Drake is #1 haha. (Plus a few big album releases and a new Ariana Grande song). On this note, I'm slightly surprised Ariana hasn't done a song with Drake yet. She collabs with Big Sean, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Future, The Weeknd, Mac Miller, etc. I would have expected one to happen at some point.

I hope no song spends 15 weeks at #1, because it would break this oddly interesting record:
Boyz II Men has a 16 week, 14 week, and 13 week #1. Meaning they have a song with the most weeks #1, second most weeks #1, and third most weeks #1.
Mariah also has a 16 week and 14 week #1, giving her a song with most weeks #1 and second most weeks #1.
A 15-week #1 would break those records, and no other artist would probably ever achieve such for a very long time if it ever happened again.
