Yes!! Fergie was on a huge singles run with "The Dutchess" (London Bridge - #1, Fergalicious - #2, Glamorous - #1, Big Girls Don't Cry - #2, Clumsy - #5) but I didn't realize Clumsy peaked at #5 behind these 3 huge songs. Gives me an appreciation for how big some of these hits like Bubbly and Clumsy were.

The week that "Mrs. Robinson" was in its 2nd week at #1, on Tuesday, June 4th, 1968, the California primary was held.  President Johnson had already announced his intention not to run for re-election so the field for the Democratic nomination was wide open.  For Senator Robert F. Kennedy (JFK's younger brother) the California primary was vitally important for his hopes of getting the Democratic nomination in 1968. 

The counting of the votes went late into the night; and it wasn't until just after midnight, west coast time, June 5th, 1968, that Kennedy took to the podium at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles and gave his victory speech after winning the much fought over primary.

After Kennedy's speech, he took what was supposed to be a short cut through the kitchen of the hotel in order to go and answer questions from the gathered media.  While passing through the kitchen, a Palestinian man named Sirhan Sirhan posing as a kitchen worker stepped forward and shot him 3 times; mortally wounding him and sending him into a coma.

Kennedy remained in a coma until early June 6th, 1968, when he finally passed away from his injuries.  The nation was in shock; for the second time in just two months a major national political figure had been shot and killed; and now another Kennedy brother had been assassinated.

1968 was turning into a very violent year.

In the case of Top 40, radio is marketing a very specific niche to those advertisers. "What a programmer of a Top 40 radio station imagines is that the ideal listener is a mom in a car with her daughter," Weisbard says. "That's a stereotype in the industry."

Interesting historical side point. Kind of hard to believe that was 50 years ago. The '60s were very turbulent but also very exciting times. It would have been cool to be alive then!

^ and the 1996 Telecommunication Act - government permitted massive consolidation, which then created segregated playlists since owners want stations to have their own identity - that leads to further niche audiences, which all leads back to advertising.

It’s still funny to talk about terrestrial radio - I don’t know anyone who listens to it - even in car - it’s either Bluetooth Streaming or Sirius. I just find it hard to believe that the cumulative audience numbers are still that high.

Like iTunes before it, Streaming has a provided another route - but even the power of streaming playlists is evident - so in essence the streaming services, like radio, are steering listeners to certain music/artists.

Tbh I don’t know how radio numbers are staying as high as they are. No one I know listens to radio and even myself I don’t listen to it even a quarter as much as I used to. Has how it gets reported changed in a way to keep the ratings high or even higher? Even just looking at it from a surface point, there are so many more ways to listen to music (even on the go) compared to 10 and 20 years ago. How have radio ratings changed since then?
