With the possibility of a #1 hit by XXXTentacion let's take a look at others who have scored #1 hits after they passed: Otis Redding --- (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay (1968) Janis Joplin --- Me and Bobby McGee (1971) Jim Croce --- Time In A Bottle (1973) John Lennon ---(Just Like) Starting Over (1981) Notorious BIG ---- Hypnotize (1997) Notorious BIG -----Mo Money Mo Problems (1997) Soulja Slim --- Slow Motion (2004) Static Major --- Lollipop (2008) Was Selena's dreaming of you #1 after she died or was it before? For some reason, I always think it hit #1 after she died. Yes, we've had this discussion many times over on this board. Some of you like to financially support rapists and murderers and allow their celebrity to continue so that they can take advantage of more people. We get it. come on, separate the artist from the music. Who cares if He's a rapist/pedophile/sex offender/insert other disgusting crime, I like his music yeah that's now how it works, though

part of casual racism is that you don't know that you are being racist, but when a lot of casual racism build up it turns into something else.
Just saying that there shouldn't be race themed jokes on this board in any context no matter how small ^_^

I’m rooting for I Like It to be #1.
In addition to that, this thread must be one of the worst Hot 100 threads that I’ve read here.

part of casual racism is that you don't know that you are being racist, but when a lot of casual racism build up it turns into something else. Just saying that there shouldn't be race themed jokes on this board in any context no matter how small ^_^ Justin Bieber, the key performer that drove "Despacito" to #1 in America, was filmed making up the words to the song because he didn't actually know them anymore, replacing them with "poquito", "dorito" and "burrito". Maybe it was a reference to that? Regardless, a joke is a joke. Offense is either in the intent of the speaker/writer, or in the interpretation of the listener/reader. The author of that line has stated that it was a joke, and it was clearly aimed at no one in particular, which means people are choosing to be offended by it. I wouldn't dare to say "it's just words", because I know all too well how words can hurt someone, but in this case people are clearly opting to get triggered by a joke rather than laugh it off or ignore it. Or, they're joining in on the joke and being trolls, I can't tell in some cases. Personally, I'd rather laugh it off. As people have witnessed here, my sense of humor can also be politically incorrect (I have even been flagged for it), but I see myself as part of the "Family Guy" generation: I can joke about anything or laugh at anything, without undermining the seriousness of the subject matter. I've laughed at jokes about cancer, and there's nothing funny about cancer itself, we've all lost people to it. Cancer isn't funny, racism isn't funny. Jokes about cancer or racism, however, CAN be funny. They can also be terribly inappropriate or in poor taste, of course, it all depends on the context. But how is referring to "Despacito" as "Desburrito" inappropriate?... Why does anyone actually care? Sorry for the rant, but people who get triggered by the smallest things trigger me. Aaaaaanywho, back on track, what's the word on "Apesh*t"? Top 10 contender? Yes? No? Maybe? Either way, Blue Ivy won't care, that little girl is always unimpressed.

That assumes that because you can laugh it off there is no other consequence. There are also people who can laugh at jokes about immigrants, rape, etc. Many of us believe those then result in the desensitization to, and normalization of, those concepts. So, sure, someone can laugh off a joke that promotes an ignorant stereotype, but then not addressing it might also further the thought that it's acceptable to stereotype based on race. You may disagree and my point isn't to tell you to change. My intent is simply to explain why some people can't just laugh off a joke. To some of us those small jokes have larger consequences.

You may disagree and my point isn't to tell you to change. My intent is simply to explain why some people can't just laugh off a joke. To some of us those small jokes have larger consequences. Or, you can perceive those things as ridiculous. Racism is serious, as I've said - it's also ridiculous. Racism is a stupid thing, the idea that it still exists to this day is unfathomable. To joke about it might help to showcase how ridiculous it is, to the point where people wouldn't actually exercise it with meaning. But that's just me anyway... I would never be racist and mean to be racist, it's just dumb, but I would 100% utter a stereotypical racist joke because that's just me. I know the difference. The people you've mentioned clearly don't know the difference, if they can be desensitized to things such as racism or rape. But the people I mentioned also don't know the difference between actual racism and humor, to them it's all the same, and that might not be as serious, but it's sure as hell incredibly ANNOYING. More and more, there's people criticizing every joke or comment, becoming a bunch of whiney babies who deconstruct things, take them out of context, and get offended by any and everything. But hey, if they wanna spend their lives being sour over everything they hear or read, that's on them. There's far bigger problems in the world that people don't seem to give two craps about, but God forbid a white girl go up on stage with Kendrick Lamar and sing the N-word that he repeats 50 times in his own song. Anyway, I know what my values and ideals are and I'm at peace with them. And I sure as hell refuse to be villanized over making a joke or laughing at one.

Is there a reason why the top 10 is so weak right now? I remember when Closer had the weakest digital sales with 82k during it's final week at #1, now the weakest is around 30k which is insane to me. Digital sales are dead. Streaming is really powering the charts right now and I guess most of the top songs at the moment are clinging on because of streaming and nothing else and that's why they are weak. I don't know, the charts are so weird right now, even radio is acting strange, pop had a very hard time this past weekend and it might be because radio isn't playing anything aside from the same five songs. Sales: dead. It's ~10% of the points. Radio: having a hard time with pop (and EDM to some extent) struggling to produce big hits (Perfect is the only song to reach 150M audience this year). Streaming: on-demand services are gaining users and streams like crazy, but I feel like YouTube and Pandora aren't increasing its popularity that much (The #1 song on Pandora has 5M spins and that's really low for its standarts - 7-11M). And the biggest issue: the two biggest metrics (radio and streaming) are completely different in terms of what songs are succeeding. The Middle: radio #1 - streaming #33 Lucid Dreams: radio not top 50 - streaming #1 Never Be The Same: radio #3 - streaming not top 50 Yes Indeed: radio not top 50 - streaming #4 That's why Nice For What is #1 on the Hot 100 while not being in the top 2 on any metric (happened on June 2 and June 23).

Wordplay on a Latin flavored song is what it is. Inserting the word “burrito” doesn’t work with every song.
Macaburrito? Livin La Vida Burrito?
Doesn’t flow off the tongue quite as wel. LOL

I wonder, if "SAD!" does go to #1 next week, how much will the song drop the week after. Would be interesting to see if it can beat "Nothing from Nothing" by Billy Preston and "Then Came You" by Dionne Warwick and the Spinners (both of which went from #1 to #15) for the biggest drop from the #1 spot.

Agreed. We have so many long running #1 songs in the past three years when streaming became the dominant force There was more quick turnover at #1 when digital downloads took off big time like in 2006-2008. It's also because with downloads you could purchase the song on it's debut week and still be playing it 10 weeks into it's release, and yet chart-wise, you only "helped" the song on it's first week. I can't say that was 100% accurate either, even if it made for more interesting charts. There's a new bunch of buyers buying the song each week though so I saw it as more casual listener success as the song continues to attract new buyers each week. I think having airplay in the mix balance things out. 100% accuracy is probably not going to be achieved though, each component has its downside and weak spots that could be manipulated For what it's worth I do think Billboard does it best to balance all components to make the chart best reflect what songs are doing well

Some people could care less about what the person has done, it's the music. Many people are just discovering X and they listen to see what all the fuss is about. Maybe you can't separate music and personal issues from the artist, but most people can. Yes, we've had this discussion many times over on this board. Some of you like to financially support rapists and murderers and allow their celebrity to continue so that they can take advantage of more people. We get it. I'm not aware of any mainstream artist who's been found guilty of rape or murder, other than 2Pac. Oh, Bobby Shmurda I guess. And there's probably a laundry list of older artists that nobody here talks about. I know a lot of allegations get thrown around. But being accused of something doesn't mean you did it either. Tay-K is awaiting trial for murder. I believe Kodak may be awaiting trial for rape. Implying that fans of 2Pac or Bobby Shmurda or whoever are somehow listening to the artists so that they can hurt more people is incendiary, accusatory, immature, and just unnecessarily trollish. It's some hardcore finger pointing.
