yall can act like its not true but death changes an artists legacy entirely and i will stand by that point. I understand you guys think I'm crazy now because of his allegations but trust me, X is literally the perfect candidate for the next "died too young" kinda person -High profile murder -Conspiracies about such murder -He was at the height of his popularity -He was only 20 -He's a dad Not to mention the cultural significance of Soundcloud and that scene. Sorry to say, but it's the new grunge or gangsta rap and even before his death, I would argue X was at the forefront of this scene. All this is why I've been saying X will be remembered by our culture. And one of the most important aspects boosting his legacy: The subject matter of his music. All about death, depression, suicide, angst. It all feels even more powerful after death. look at Michael Jackson. Before death, he was seen as a child molester and pretty much nothing else. After death, he's a legend. I don't think you understand how death really affects the legacy of a celebrity. Wrong, Michael Jackson actually had an ouevre of songs that the general public loved in spite of the problematic nature of the artist. In my childhood, hits like Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, Billie Jean, and Beat It were frequently spun on the radio long before the death, not to mention his hits with the Jackson 5. You have to face the fact that, not only did X only have two proper hits to his name, neither of which radio or tastemakers (e.g. music critics, the ones who would do retrospectives) were fond of, kneecapping his influence postmortem, but his material just wasn’t substantial to warrant an ouevre in the first place. 2 minute songs that are mostly chorus just flat out are not enough. You're right. MJ is kind of a different beast. Because he was obviously way way more popular. XXXTentacion had 15 charting songs. Two major albums. Pretty wide discography. Only a few "hits", however you want to define that term. If you HAVE to make a comparison, Nirvana would probably be a more apt comparison. Transformative, influential artist whose music was characterized by themes of death and depression. BUT most importantly, XXX cannot be the "next Tupac" or "second Nirvana" or whatever. He's the first and ONLY XXXTentacion.

I think some of you may have missed this. If this conversation must continue, please take it to the dedicated thread in the News subforum. Let's get back to the chart discussion here. Either way, this will be the last reminder that you could use this thread instead of this one to discuss about XXXtentacion's stuff not related to his music.

Sorry, but can someone quickly please explain what the Soundcloud sound is? Isn't it a music platform? Or is it a style of Hip-Hop?

Lauryn Hill deserves it but sadly she isn't credited for Nice For What Weird that "Doo Wop" is her only top 10 hit ever, including the Fugees who scored none. Ah, Billboard in the 90's, you sure sucked. "Killing Me Softly" peaked at #2.

Sorry, but can someone quickly please explain what the Soundcloud sound is? Isn't it a music platform? Or is it a style of Hip-Hop? it's a music platform, that has become famous for blowing up the likes of XXXTENTACION, Lil Pump, Ski Mask the Slump God, Smokepurpp etc. and now people call any hip-hop music that isn't 'lyrical' Soundcloud rap for whatever reason (although it tends to be non hip-hop fans who use this term)

i hope the Billboard charts eventually get to a Sweden level of #1 turnover (Sweden is also dominated by streaming) their last >10-week #1 was despacito, and before that, it was shape of you which was non-consecutive, and the last one before that was Wake Me Up! which was also when Sweden's industry became streaming-dominated.
though i know this might be very unlikely because duh Sweden is way smaller than the US in size, so faster chart movement is kind of guaranteed
i'm trying to redirect this thread back to chart convo please don't ask me why i brought up sweden

Sorry, but can someone quickly please explain what the Soundcloud sound is? Isn't it a music platform? Or is it a style of Hip-Hop? both Soundcloud is a streaming service but anyone can upload, and the Souncloud "scene" includes stuff like distorted 808s, chorus-verse-chorus structures (and the songs are super short), and lo-fi influence. I would also include the current wave of emo hip hop in the scene. Xxxtentacion, Lil Pump, Lil Xan, 6ix9ine, Lil Peep, Ugly God, Trippie Redd, Wifisfuneral, Smokepurpp, etc. are examples of artists in the scene.

what i'm VERY pumped about is BLACKPINK potentially hitting the Hot 100. has there ever been a week where we've had two korean-language songs on the Hot 100 at once?

Never even heard of Lil Tay. Honestly though, there are way too many Lil's in hip-hop, what's up with that? Legit asking, does anyone know? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lil Lol.

I’m not worried about them, they’re just EVERYWHERE. And yeah she (Tay) makes music. Nothing of hers charted but she makes music.

I have GLY gaining 17% in points this week (June 30) vs. I Like It's +5%. ILI's discount makes it harder to predict next week's #1, but Girls Like You is certainly a contender.

I really prefer Future, Young Thug, Migos, 21 Savage or even Lil Uzi Vert to chart higher instead of these Soundcloud rappers. Lil Skies in my opinion is the only decent Soundcloud rapper.

Time line of charting Lil's. (For the fun of it, and to hopefully steer conversation of this thread away from death trolling).
Lil Louis (1989) <- EDM artist Lil Suzy (1992) <- "freestyle singer" from Brooklyn Lil Kim (1996) <- First charting "Lil" rapper. Lil Troy (1999) Lil Wayne (1999) <- History's biggest Lil Lil Zane (2000) Lil Mo (2000) Lil Bow Wow (2000) Lil Romeo (2001) Lil Jon (2001) <- 7 in three years Lil Flip (2004) Lil Rob (2005) Lil Scrappy (2006) Lil Boosie (2006) Lil Mama (2007) Lil Dicky (2015) <- first in 8 years, has nothing to do with the other new Lils in terms of style Lil Uzi Vert (2016) <- The REAL rebirth of Lil. Lil Yachty (2016) Lil Pump (2017) Lil Xan (2017) Lil Peep (2017) Lil Baby (2017) Lil Skies (2018)

Guys, time will tell what happens, so everyone should just relax for now. "SAD!" could still go #1, Simm himself seems to be unsure of what happens, and Billboard has been wrong befoJUST LAST WEEK! If "I Like It" goes #1, makes sense, Cardi is a hot in-demand artist and the song is perfect for the summer, mixing the most popular current genre (hip-hop) with the rising wave of latino beats that has been taking over since "Despacito". And if "SAD!" goes #1, makes sense too, it's the new posthumous chart-topper by a young artist killed whilst still on the rise, and whose personal life was attached to a lot of drama and attention from the media. If "Girls Like You" goes #1... cool, I guess, whatever. Point is, it's a close call, so let's wait till the results get in and THEN comment on the outcome. Getting this worked up about something that's, as of yet, hypothetical, is unnecessary, and especially concerning in a thread that's been a mess from the get-go. And like I said, we're relying too much on it all being a "now-or-never" situation. I really doubt "SAD!" is gonna freefall next week... The novelty of his death will not have worn out THAT quickly and the streams will still be there, just like they've been there for Drake or Cardi all along. Heck, maybe radio will even jump in on it, since he did die and everything. And if it doesn't go #1, well, it happens. Think of the huuuuge amount of iconic, relevant, enduring songs that have stalled at #2, some even deemed to be some of the best ever made (like "Bohemian Rhapsody" or "Like a Rolling Stone"). "SAD!" would just be joining the list of unjusticed songs, not the worst thing ever. Good point. There are plenty of #2 peaking songs that are arguably better than the #1 songs that denied them the top spot. Plenty of them.

I Like It's streaming #s are surprisingly higher in that report +35 million
And SAD! Is lower..(Over 35 million as well)
1.Lucid Dreams - 40+ million streams 2.Sad! - 35+ million 3.I Like It - 35+ million
Interesting....
