Not to mention the cultural significance of Soundcloud and that scene. Sorry to say, but it's the new grunge or gangsta rap and even before his death, I would argue X was at the forefront of this scene. All this is why I've been saying X will be remembered by our culture.

And one of the most important aspects boosting his legacy: 

The subject matter of his music. All about death, depression, suicide, angst. It all feels even more powerful after death.

Wrong, Michael Jackson actually had an ouevre of songs that the general public loved in spite of the problematic nature of the artist. In my childhood, hits like Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, Billie Jean, and Beat It were frequently spun on the radio long before the death, not to mention his hits with the Jackson 5. MJ is kind of a different beast. Because he was obviously way way more popular.

XXXTentacion had 15 charting songs. Two major albums. Pretty wide discography. Only a few "hits", however you want to define that term.

If you HAVE to make a comparison, Nirvana would probably be a more apt comparison. Transformative, influential artist whose music was characterized by themes of death and depression.


BUT most importantly, XXX cannot be the "next Tupac" or "second Nirvana" or whatever. He's the first and ONLY XXXTentacion.

it's a music platform, that has become famous for blowing up the likes of XXXTENTACION, Lil Pump, Ski Mask the Slump God, Smokepurpp etc. and now people call any hip-hop music that isn't 'lyrical' Soundcloud rap for whatever reason (although it tends to be non hip-hop fans who use this term)

their last >10-week #1 was despacito, and before that, it was shape of you which was non-consecutive, and the last one before that was Wake Me Up! which was also when Sweden's industry became streaming-dominated.

though i know this might be very unlikely because duh Sweden is way smaller than the US in size, so faster chart movement is kind of guaranteed

Soundcloud is a streaming service but anyone can upload, and the Souncloud "scene" includes stuff like distorted 808s, chorus-verse-chorus structures (and the songs are super short), and lo-fi influence. I would also include the current wave of emo hip hop in the scene. Xxxtentacion, Lil Pump, Lil Xan, 6ix9ine, Lil Peep, Ugly God, Trippie Redd, Wifisfuneral, Smokepurpp, etc. are examples of artists in the scene.

Yeah... I have GLY gaining 17% in points this week (June 30) vs. I Like It's +5%. ILI's discount makes it harder to predict next week's #1, but Girls Like You is certainly a contender.

"SAD!" would just be joining the list of unjusticed songs, not the worst thing ever.
