Some of your rankings for this album bboat11 are making me scratch my head...especially the songs you placed as your overall #1 and #2! Thus far you and I have been pretty close together when it comes to the rankings for George’s albums, but not this time lol. “What Did You Expect Me To Do” is a fine song, but overall it just kind of plods along and doesn’t really go anywhere. I’m quite uncertain how this is going to play out in the end and honestly can envision quite a few different scenarios, but I still think the three singles will be in the top 3.

Yeah my top 5 remains! But really the singles will probably dominate here and I can't really blame anything here they did a great job picking which songs to release. One of the remaining album tracks is in my top 2 but I'm ready for it to get taken out by the singles.

Lmao of COURSE Flops would submit for the Twang rankdown a week after the deadline, and create a 3-way tie to kick off the top 10...

A new partner’s touch to an old lovers’ song. I’m getting the feelin’ as we dance along. Two strangers tonight won’t be strangers for long. Keep dancin’ this dance all wrong.

"You're Dancin' This Dance All Wrong" is a song I am SHOCKED to see so much love for... This song is downright painful to listen to! George's voice is just plain not made for a song like this. He sounds so pitchy and wobbly. The key is definitely too high to begin with. I mean, he has no problems hitting the notes, it just sounds kinda weird for his voice to be so high for so long. He would probably do a much better job with this song nowadays, but as it exists now it is just the perfect mix of unseasoned and dated to make me put it almost at the bottom of this album.

With the loss of YDTDAW, "I Should Have Watched That First Step" is officially the highest placing album track on this album! It remains alongside the album's three singles. Now let's see if it is able to outlast any or all of the singles!!!

Now let's see if it is able to outlast any or all of the singles!!! Lmao y'all, it wasn't even CLOSE!!!!!! Here is the points distribution: #4. "First Step" - 84 points #3. 49 points #2. 49 points #1. 41 points Yes, not only are our three singles the top 3, but they completely ran away with it!!!! It was very clear from the get-go that these three were the most-loved songs on this album. These songs were basically the top 3 for the entire submission process, in one order or another. All three of them were #1 contenders. And if you are paying attention to the above, you should notice that #2 and #3 actually ended up finishing in a tie! Without further ado, here is your top 3: Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind The Cowboy Rides Away The Fireman

In what might come as a marginal surprise, the title track (and biggest hit chart-wise from the album) bows out before the other singles. That means the top 2 is down to George's live concert closer (The Cowboy Rides Away) versus one of his biggest live staples (The Fireman). Neither song made it high enough to join his massive list of #1 hits, but both are among the most impactful singles of his career for various reasons. The song at #2 was the biggest #1 contender of the rankdown. It is also the most polarizing song of the rankdown. A couple of #10 ranks dragged it down, just barely preventing it from claiming the crown in this rankdown at the last minute!! Get your popcorn ready, I'm typing up the final reveal!

The chorus saves the song IMO.

I knew the stakes were high right from the start. When she dealt the cards, I bet my heart. Now I just found a game that I can’t play, And this is where the cowboy rides away.

Last night they had a bad one a mile or two down the road. Well, my buddy walked out and left his woman burnin’ out of control. Well, I was down there in about a hour or so. With a little mouth to mouth, she was ready to go. I’m the fireman. That’s my name.

There you have it! Despite the deluge of last-place ranks that was thrown at them, both of these songs managed to end up in just about everybody else's top 5s, helping them to finish in the top 2. George Strait Junkie gets to breathe a HUGE sigh of relief, as his #10 bows out as the cowboy rides away and allows his #1 to take the top spot. (However, how the HELL does anybody have "The Cowboy Rides Away" in last place on this album?!?!!?!?!) Unfortunately for castleoblivion26, the opposite scenario is true... His #1 bows out at #2, as despite his best efforts his #10 pulls off a decisive victory... Cool fact about "The Cowboy Rides Away": This song has been George's concert closer pretty much since the day it came out! (I'm not sure if he's ever briefly retired the song or not. I just know that it has always been the closer anytime I have heard about or seen one of his shows). However, he would only play the first verse and chorus, and then say goodnight and just up and leave. He never sang the second verse and last chorus, for 30+ years. Until his final concert of his retirement tour, when he finally dusted off that final verse for his final performance of the song. Talk about an emotional thing for his fans to experience!!! :'(

i think its more of the fact. i dont wanna think about a time where The Cowboy will ride away for ever. so songs like this and I Will Always Remember You i just can't go there. no matter how great these songs are. i don't wanna live to see a day there is no George Strait. thats what those songs make me think about. and i just cant go there.

3) Which songs belong in the top 5? My top 5 lol Which reaaaaallly won't happen.
4) What song will be most polarizing? Least polarizing? Most "The Breath You Take". Least "Living For The Night"
5) Which of the singles will place highest? Where will it place? (Living For The Night, Twang, I Gotta Get To You, The Breath You Take) "Living For The Night" at #1
6) Which of the singles will place lowest? Where will it place? "Twang" #9

Oh thank goodness "The Fireman" won this. Much, much better song than "The Cowboy Rides Away."
1) What will be #1? "Living for the Night" will probably win because it's a single and the one from this album most everyone seems to like.
2) What will be #13? Should be "The Breath You Take" but it'll probably outlast at least a few of the album cuts, so probably something like "El Rey."
3) Which songs belong in the top 5? "Twang" had better make it! I am also rooting for "Beautiful Day for Goodbye" and "Out of Sight Out of Mind." "Living for the Night" and "Gotta Get to You" will probably slide in there, too.
4) What song will be most polarizing? Least polarizing? Most: "Twang" / Least: "Living for the Night"
5) Which of the singles will place highest? Where will it place? (Living For The Night, Twang, I Gotta Get To You, The Breath You Take) "Living for the Night" will be highest, and probably win.
6) Which of the singles will place lowest? Where will it place? "The Breath You Take" is horrid so hopefully that will be out first, and I'm guessing it'll go around 10-11.
7) What will be the lowest rank for the biggest hit from the album? Who will rank it that low? (Living For The Night) I'm guessing my rank for it will be the lowest.
8) What will be the highest-placing album track? Where will it place? Either "Beautiful Day for Goodbye" or "Out of Sight Out of Mind" please! And I know the singles from this record aren't the strongest bunch so I could see a #2 finish perhaps.
9) Any other thoughts/predictions? I love "Twang" so I hope it doesn't get tanked too soon. It better at least make it past "Breath."

“The Fireman” is one of the earliest songs by George that I can remember becoming a fan of when I was a kid and am thrilled to see it win...I’ll also gladly add another #1 notch to my belt as I stan for the King! The song also remains one of the highlights for his live shows and is still one that I hear on the radio frequently. 1) What will be #1? Going with the consensus that “Living for the Night” will be #1 2) What will be #13? Probably “El Rey” 3) Which songs belong in the top 5? “Living for the Night”, “Gotta Get to You”, and “Easy As You Go” are all likely top 5 contenders...”Twang” might sneak in but I could see it missing the top 5. I also think “He’s Got That Something Special” could be in the top 5. 4) What song will be most polarizing? Maybe “Twang” Least polarizing? “El Rey” assuming that most of the rankings are somewhere near the bottom 5) Which of the singles will place highest and where will it place? “Living For The Night for the win with “Gotta Get to You” in top 3 6) Which of the singles will place lowest and where will it place? I’m thinking it’ll be “The Breath You Take” but I also remember that “Twang” was in the bottom 10 for the George Strait rankdown...that said “Twang” will likely place higher this time around 7) What will be the lowest rank for the biggest hit from the album? Probably bottom 3 Who will rank it that low? I’m actually going to guess it might be .indulgecountry 8) What will be the highest-placing album track and where will it place? It’ll probably be “Easy As You Go” in the top 4 but I’d also like to think that “Where Have I Been All My Life” could sneak in since I know it’s one of George’s favorite album tracks from Twang as he included in the set list for a couple tours. 9) Any other thoughts/predictions? I absolutely love the album cover for Twang as the photo shoot took place at Gruene Hall where George used to play back in the 70’s. As for the rankdown I’m really hoping to see “The Breath You Take” escape the bottom 3 but I won’t be holding my breath because I think it’ll be the first single out.

"El Rey" was the only logical choice for #13!
Sorry, but I don't care for it much at all. I don't like the style in general and I don't think George pulls it off well either.

Didn't Tony Brown want George to actually name the album this lol? I remember reading or hearing something about that...but yea not at all surprised to see it come in last. That said I actually enjoy putting this one on from time to time and it also wouldn't be out of the question to still hear it on radio occasionally down here in Texas.

Bowing out first, George Strait Sings Spanish!!! I am sure this reveal is absolutely not a surprise to anybody, and tbh I probably overranked it a tad... But let's be real, this is one of George's more lackluster albums, and "El Rey" is a song that REALLY stands out, for better or for worse. If this were one of his incredible '90s albums, or even a slightly more modern gem like It Just Comes Natural, this song would have been an easy last-place for me. But tbh this album has very few songs that make anything more than a vague ripple in his discography, so it is basically the perfect album for this song to make some noise on my own list... Lol!
"El Rey" has always jumped out at me because (at least to my untrained white ears) it sounds like authentic mariachi music! I'm not sure what Hispanic people would think of a cover like this, but I have always thought George did it justice, and did a very good job of trying to maintain the spirit of the original. It helps that I took enough Spanish through the years to be able to understand the lyrics to this song, which are downright poetic in places.
I am not shocked at all to see this in last place, because nobody listens to George Strait expecting to hear mariachi music. And there is nothing wrong with that! But for me this song is a standout on the album in terms of being a bold artistic risk, which tbh nobody ever really gives George credit for.
