wow, this song is great. I remember George singing this at one of the award shows when this album was current. Was always sad it wasn't released as a single I'm assuming this is about "Honk If You Honky Tonk", because you were one of the biggest tankers of "As Far As It Goes"...

I redid that comment after I saw that lol

I literally cannot even. The remainder of this rankdown is cancelled. It made top 5 calm down lol. I agree with castleoblivion26 on this one. It's good for sure and I like it but fail to see where it's such a standout song in George's catalog.

Okay, but most of us consider this to be the only album track of his entire career that had a chance of winning an album rankdown, so... I guess "She Used To Say That To Me" is actually the one to beat! Who knew!

Single bias strikes again!!!
She used to say that to me, Over and over so sweet. She’ll tell you she’ll never leave. She used to say that to me.

I'm surprised that "Desperately" is in the Top 2. I remember being shocked that was a single over "Honk If You Honky Tonk"

Single bias strikes again!!! Well I'm not upset about it here since both of them are amazing songs and made top 30 on my list for George's singles RD lol.

I mean, it wasn't a terrible single choice like "Tell Me Something Bad About Tulsa", but there were at least 5 songs on this album that would have been better singles imo... Including "Honk If You Honky Tonk".

I don't get the distaste (dispassion maybe?) for "Desperately" tbh it has that classic, iconic George sound to me. One hell of a melody and vocal.

Every night it’s the same; I hear you callin’ my name. You’re lyin’ next to me. I give in to your charms, You disappear in my arms. I realize it’s just a dream, but
Desperately, I long to feel your touch. But, you left me all alone in love.
2. "Desperately"
Track #8 Runtime: 4:08
We sing about true love, Lie about things we ain’t done. Drink one more cold one, Come mornin’ get up And we roll.
1. "Cowboys Like Us"
Track #4 Runtime: 3:39

Single bias or not, the top 2 was the correct top 2. And honestly, I pretty much adore these two songs equally, so I wasn't really worried about which one would take the top spot lol. This is an excellent album tho, I love the whole thing except for "Tulsa" which remains one of George's biggest clunkers... luckily he doesn't have many of them, lol. Thanks for hosting as usual bboat11 it was fun as usual!

Just like several other moments in this rankdown, the last handful of lists completely went against the majority with "Desperately". This song was settled in comfortably at #4, behind "Cowboys", "Honk If You Honky Tonk", and "As Far As It Goes", which felt correct to me based on every fan reaction I have ever heard for this album. And then the last handful of lists ALL put "Desperately" in their top 2, while simultaneously tanking both "Honk" and "As Far"... It was like watching the 2016 election all over again!I am totally happy seeing "Cowboys Like Us" at #1 though!! That has always been one of his more underrated hits, imo If a single had to win this rankdown, I was hoping for that one, and I am thrilled it came through! In fact, there was literally no competition. I can see why some people find this song boring, but I have always loved the atmosphere of this song. It sets up this whole aesthetic of the wild west with the musical arrangement that is simply remarkable! To this day I am pissed that this barely missed #1 on the radio....

I'm happy that "Cowboys Like Us" won as it was the correct choice but I do wish "Honk If You Honky Tonk" had done better, I love that one!

I don't get the distaste (dispassion maybe?) for "Desperately" tbh it has that classic, iconic George sound to me. One hell of a melody and vocal. It does have a very classic sound to it. But over the course of its 4 minutes, the song has no build to it whatsoever. The melody, while catchy, starts to plod because there is no variation whatsoever in the way it is sung from beginning to end. Which is why nobody ever regards it among the upper echelons of George's output alongside songs like "Blue Clear Sky", "Amarillo By Morning", "Carrying Your Love With Me", etc. And automatically makes it less exciting for me than songs like "Honk If You Honky Tonk", "She Used To Say That To Me", "As Far As It Goes", etc. Again, it's still a good song! I'm just not surprised to see it have such a middling reception among his hits. And given its middling reception among his hits, I'm surprised it was able to rise above some of his highest-regarded missed single opportunities on this album.

None of the singles deserved to win this rankdown. What a mess! "Desperately" especially had no business being top 5, let alone top 2. Such a meh song. At least "Cowboys Like Us" beat it... but that one's only a little better. Meh. What a disappointing rankdown all around.

Stations in Dallas actually played Honk If You Honkytonk like it was an actual single! They were probably desperate to play anything besides Tell Me Something Bad About Tulsa. I spent almost all of Desperately's chart run absolutely despising it, but then it suddenly grew on me and I haven't felt any ill will towards it since.

Baby's Gotten Good At Goodbye 7. What's Going On In Your World 8. Angel, Angelina 9. Too Much Of Too Little 10. Oh Me, Oh My Sweet Baby
The Road Less Traveled (2001) Tracklist: (Runtime 33:47)
1. She'll Leave You With A Smile 2. Run 3. Stars On The Water 4. Living And Living Well 5. The Real Thing 6. Don't Tell Me You're Not In Love 7. The Road Less Traveled 8. The Middle Of Nowhere 9. Good Time Charley's 10. My Life's Been Grand
Y'all, I am SO excited for our next set for several reasons! First of all, these are two of George's most iconic albums from their respective decades. Beyond The Blue Neon saw George taking more risks than he had at any other point in his career, experimenting with saxophone and "jazzing up" his arrangements in ways that help this album to sound truly transformational for him. The result was 4 very successful singles, as well as a set of album tracks that have gone on to be iconic in their own right ("Hollywood Squares", "Oh Me Oh My Sweet Baby", etc). The Road Less Traveled is George at his most comfortable. This is one of his most consistent albums of the 2000s. It is also the album that produced his 48th-50th #1 hits, all of which are modern classics, so the battle is likely to be fierce!! Another reason why I am excited is because at this point, we have gone far enough back in time that both the older album and the newer album are only 10 tracks long. Lmao from now on it should be less of a time commitment to be able to rank both albums. Finally, I am most excited because this set represents our LAST set that includes an album from the '80s!!!!!! After this, we will be moving on up into the '90s, which will become incredibly iconic incredibly quickly! However, before we venture into the '90s, we are going to pause for a quick detour where we rank George's top album tracks from the '80s before you all forget them The deadline for this one will be set for sometime in the future! That time in the future is Saturday, October 19th!! As always, rank both albums separately, and then send them to me via personal message Previous Participants: tim Kanenrá:ke Troublemaker gardyfan castleoblivion26 fearlessarrow Cody Wants Out... .indulgecountry collinkottke LBTrocks bboat11 DistrictTwelve George Strait Junkie BackwoodsBarbie cerulean gonecountry dub g8erboi born mamasaid @xfer ClevelandRox People who participated in the George Strait singles rankdown: bboat11 Cody Wants Out... .indulgecountry codyj100 sabre14 George Strait Junkie zaclord 🌈 mamasaid castleoblivion26 DistrictTwelve countrymusicjunkie CoJoFan gardyfan carriekins fearlessarrow LBTrocks tim BackwoodsBarbie Kanenrá:ke General tag list! dm2081 bigfan101 rgreen0625 bboat11 zaclord 🌈 CoJoFan LBTrocks Kentucky25 austin YotamTS .indulgecountry zjames Sambalada sabre14 fearlessarrow countrymusicjunkie castleoblivion26 Leo ✔ someguy Darkest Hour Troublemaker Kanenrá:ke trustypepper codyj100 d3vin44 vann Andy edph1 sbp17 Sean The Brazilian Guy 🇧🇷 stonemc06 mamasaid Cody Wants Out... tim toomuchboy kansasmeetsmo cerulean BlueShades874 wavey. andrewantonio aerodynamite BackwoodsBarbie dub g8erboi SHOOTER Zeebz collinkottke ClevelandRox @xfer

Save for “Cowboys Like Us” winning all I can say is WHAT…A…MESS! The results for the top 5 were a complete headscratcher from seeing “Honk if You Honky Tonk” out first only to be followed by “As Far As It Goes” which no doubt would’ve been the biggest hit from the album had it been released as a single (supposedly the story goes that the record label couldn’t come to some kind of agreement with the publishers)…I was even surprised to find out that a couple of you weren’t even really all that familiar with this song!
I wasn’t surprised, however, to see “She Used to Say That to Me” make it this far into the top 5 because despite my top 10 ranking it still is a favorite track of mine and has been since the album first came out. It’s a cleverly written song and one that lets George’s humor come through on. Now….based on the conversations I’ve seen around on Pulse and just an overall gut feeling I had about “Desperately” I really thought this would end up either just missing the top 5 or barely making it in…only to see it go on to make it as the second favorite song on the album! This is another Bruce Robison-penned song that I was quite familiar with thanks in part to it getting some radio airplay across Texas and I admit that I’m still partial to the original version, and although George’s is still good I’ve never considered it to be one that really stands out amongst the rest of his discography. I had to look back to see where this landed in his singles rankdown and forgot that it even came close to making it into the top 50 so obviously a lot of you do seem to enjoy this one quite a bit more than I myself do. So while this may not have ended up going the way I would’ve preferred I must say that as someone who has listened to George’s albums ad nauseam it’s a lot of fun for me to get to know everyone’s thoughts about them especially from all of you first-time listeners…so for that thanks again bboat11 !

And OOOHHH I'm super excited for the next series because both are very solid albums...and while the old saying goes you should never judge a book by its cover all I can is both of those album covers are perfect for their respective material
