I know single bias surely isn't going to prop up the awful dreck that is "Drinking Champagne"?! That better be out next. Sorry to this man :'(
Now everybody has their share of problems, But everybody don't know how to solve 'em. We grow closer every day 'Cause we learn from those mistakes we made. And we're supposed to do that now and then.

"We're Supposed To Do That Now And Then" leaves us at #7, taking the first #1 of the rankdown with it for poor .indulgecountry :'( I have always loved this one. The little hiccuping bass groove in the intro to the song immediately gives this one a dose of character that sets it apart from the other vanilla songs on this album. Plus it is pretty catchy. I am pleased to see this one at least make the album tracks rankdown, cause it definitely is one of the standout album tracks here!

Guilty conscience I guess, Though I must confess, I never loved you much when you were mine.
So I'll keep drinking champagne, feeling no pain 'til early morning. Dining and dancing with every pretty girl I can find. Having a fling with a pretty young thing 'til early morning, Knowing tomorrow I'll wake up with you on my mind.

.indulgecountry can rest easy now, because revenge has been had!!!! "Drinking Champagne" was the 2nd of 3 singles from this album; a flop sandwiched between two pretty significant #1 hits. Well, it wasn't actually a flop, because it still peaked at #4. But by George's standards, it has been more or less forgotten in the wave of all the other huge hits from this time period. "Drinking Champagne" is NOT a Pulse fave, as it managed to finish in the bottom 3 of George's artist rankdown. Single bias might have helped it get to #6, but it was never even close to being a top 5 contender here.

Well that sucked but at least "Champagne" is gone. It was in my bottom 5 for his 100-song singles rankdown. What a waste of a single slot that was.

Yes, I'll take you back again; you knew I would. For I go on lovin' you; that's understood. But it's the first time you've come back with tears in your eyes. Lately someone's taught you how to cry.
Someone had to teach you. I didn't have the heart to Hurt you just like you've been hurting me. Someone had to teach you Things it's time that you knew. Now maybe you'll be satisfied with me.

I think She Loves Me (She Don’t Love You) would've been a better single choice over the forgettable Drinking Champagne, the album is pretty bland and when I got to that song it was such a fun breath of fresh air.

Continuing the trend of songs that were pretty much cemented in place, "Someone Had To Teach You" was the #5 for literally the entire submission process other than a tiny stay at #3 back near the beginning when things were more malleable. This is of course aided by a whopping FIVE perfect rankings.
I have always been hesitant to like this one because the vindictive, spiteful sentiment of hoping somebody else teaches her a lesson because he loves her too much to do so himself just feels all kinds of unhealthy and problematic... But then again she is the one cheating on him, so... Idk, it's just a song where I don't really connect with or like any of the people involved.
Still, melodically it IS better than many other songs on this album, so I am alright with this top 5 placement.

Well, just one more dance with her, And friend, you're gonna see What it's like to hit the floor And do a little dance with me. Here's your coat and there's the door, I think you better leave. 'Cause she just told me it's true; She loves me, she don't love you.

"She Loves Me (She Don't Love You)" proved to be a consistent favorite throughout the submission process! It raked in top 5 ranks with just a few lower ranks, and was pretty much guaranteed to be our #4 with the amount of consistency it achieved.
This has never been one I revisit much because tbh George's vocals are really rough in places on this song... But it definitely deserves to finish this high from a melodic standpoint!

And I'm just a lonesome cowboy, I'm a little bit over the hill. I shoulda quit this thing a long time ago, But I guess I never will. So I keep on movin' from show to show Hopin' to change my luck. My good ol' days are just a memory, But I just can't give it up.

I have long considered "Lonesome Rodeo Cowboy" to be one of the very best album tracks from this album, and I am glad to see that y'all have proven me right! There is nobody who does a heartbreaking rodeo song nearly as well as George This one isn't as well known as say "Amarillo By Morning" or "I Can Still Make Cheyenne", but it has several lyrical moments that help it to stand out. "When you're on top you have a million friends, but when you're down, brother, you're all alone." "My good old days are a memory, but I just can't give it up." "If I was smart, I would've stuck by her, but I'm hooked on this rodeo." "I'm losing out to the younger boys. I guess I must be getting slow." Etc. Every aspect of this story of an aging rodeo cowboy who just cannot give it up because it is all he knows is palpable and you can sympathize with it even if you know nothing about rodeos as a listener. I'm so glad to see it be the highest album track, because this would have made a fantastic single imo.

So upset, Nervous wreck, Can't believe you said goodbye. Sit and smoke, Cry and joke About these tears in my eyes.
How could you do what you've gone and done to me? I wouldn't treat a dog the way you treated me. But that's what I get; I've come to expect it from you.

Lol omg @ it being a tie. I am in favor of this, however, as one of the few who doesn't really care for "Amen" and finds it horribly overplayed. Wishing I had ranked it just one spot lower now, lol.

So there you have it! You may have thought this rankdown had an obvious winner, and that song DID end up winning in the end... But the battle between the top 2 was actually one of the fiercest we have seen for George's entire album series thus far!!!! "I've Come To Expect It From You" was actually the #1 for the majority of the submission process. "Love Without End, Amen" would have been the runaway winner, but it suffered from a couple pretty substantial tanking attempts, which negated some of the wave of top 3 ranks it received. ICTEIFY, on the other hand, was not even slightly polarizing, and picked up almost nothing but top 5 ranks, which helped it to stay ahead of LWEA for much of the submissions! They flip flopped a couple times, but in the end neither was able to permanently overcome the other. They finish in a tie, and the title of "winner" is given to LWEA just because it got more #1 ranks. But both songs will go on to be part of the next BotB rankdown :)
Thank you for participating and following along!!!! Now get ready for Always Never The Same to start tomorrow ;) Prediction questions will come later tonight!!

I always like getting perfect rankings in these George Strait album rankdowns, so I’m pleased to see I nailed all five songs in the top 5!
And what a finish this was! I for sure didn’t see that coming but am not at all complaining because I’ve always enjoyed both “Love Without End, Amen” and “I’ve Come to Expect It From You”. These two songs have also gone on to be some of his classic hits and one's that I still hear on the radio quite often (at least down here in Texas lol). It also must be noted that not only did both of these songs spend five weeks at number one, but “Love Without End, Amen” was his first multi-week number one hit which was only possible in part due to the changes Billboard made at the beginning of 1990 when they started officially compiling actual data from radio station airplay based on the number of spins and detections.
“Drinking Champagne” has always stood out to me as an odd choice for them to have released as a single and I’m surprised it even managed to make the top five on the charts, but George was on a hot streak then so he probably could've released a song with him singing from the phone book and it would've been a hit. This does happen to be one of the few songs from the album that I skip over and for that reason it got regulated to my bottom 3.
“She Loves Me (She Don’t Love You)” has always been a fan favorite from the album so I’m happy to see it make the top four. I believe this was also one of George’s favorites at the time as it was one of the album tracks he performed live out on tour then.
“Lonesome Rodeo Cowboy” is by far the best album track on the album, though, and is quite deserving of its top three finish. It’ll be interesting to do the album tracks rankdown for George because I have a feeling this will end up pretty high on my list!
I know that this album isn’t all that well regarded here and probably ended up being some of y’alls least favorite so far, but as I had mentioned from the start I personally have always liked it. And much to my own surprise this happens to be in my top ten of George’s most played albums (according to last.fm), so that should give you an idea of how often I put this record on.
Now bring on ANTS!

Always Never The Same Rankdown: Results Time!

|

Post by tim on May 15, 2020 0:47:11 GMT -5
1) What will be #1? “Write This Down”
2) What will be #10? “That’s Where I Wanna Take Our Love” and “4 Minus 3 Equals Zero” in the bottom 2
3) Which songs belong in the top 5? Both “Write This Down” and “Meanwhile” for sure and I’d like to see some of the album tracks round out the top five such as “Peace of Mind”, “That’s the Truth”, and the title track. Given single bias I’d guess that “What Do You Say to That” makes it in, although I’ve fallen a bit out of favor with that song as the years have gone by.
4) What song will be most polarizing? “Peace of Mind” Least polarizing? “Write This Down”
5) Which of the singles will place highest? “Write This Down” Where will it place? for the win
6) Do any of the singles have a chance of missing the top 5? I’d guess only “What Do You Say to That” but if it does it’ll still be close and at #6
7) What will be the highest-placing album track? I’m going to guess something random, but I’ll say “I Look at You” Where will it place? Top 5
8) Which album tracks would you prefer to see do the best? “That’s the Truth”
9) Any other thoughts/predictions? I honestly had this album on repeat a lot back during the day but I find outside of an album track or two I don’t revisit this one much. Is it a better album than say the one we just did Livin’ It Up? Yea, overall it probably is. But, when I’m in the mood for some classic George this just isn’t one of those go to albums I reach for. Also, this album is very much overshadowed by its mega-hit “Write This Down” and therefore maybe some of its other material gets a bit overlooked.
