I thought No Doubt dug their grave at Alternative after the last album. However, according to Mediabse 24 stations are already playing "It's My Life" and the song is among the greatest gainers. Can they have another hit here afterall?

I don't think so. It's probably just a one thing deal. Or maybe because it's a cover of a Talk Talk song. Probably not. I hope so though, because No Doubt are one of the few pop groups I can enjoy even occasionally.
C'mon, "Hella Good" was tailor made for Alternative.

I think, despite their pop presence, No Doubt are probably one of the few bands that can get away with it. How did songs from their last album do? What is their chart history at Alternative? I'd say this song could make Top 20.

i think the first two singles of "Rock Steady" were very well made for Alternative... i mean "Hey Baby" and "Hella Good" weren't too poppy sounding, but they made pop regardless

Though nothing from "Rock Steady" was able to impact Alternative ("Hella Good" was destined to hit big there), No Doubt truly has never been completely kicked out from this format.
"I'm Just A Girl" and "Spiderwebs" are still getting strong recurrent play on plenty of Alternative stations, and their sound, though CHR/Pop friendly, has an element of creativity that Alternative embraces.
"It's My Life" I believe has a good chance to go at least Top 30. It probably won't surge deep into the Top 20, nevertheless it'll be rewarding for this deserving band.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

They should have released different singles to Alternative. "Don't Let Me Down" would've been a good first single, and "Hella Good" has hooks of Elastica's old songs, so those should've been promoted.
I think they have a chance to do it again. It rocks harder than any single from Rock Steady.

I still hear some older No Doubt songs on alternative. In fact, I heard "Underneath It All" on KBZT several months ago. But like others said, it could be that since "It's My Life" is a remake, alternative stations are picking it up.

Just as a funny anecdote...I was listening to WEQX the day they got their copy of 'Hey Baby' from the record company. They played it once, then broke the CD in half on the air. After that, they chose their own lead single to play from the album, which was 'Don't Let Me Down'.

Why is everyone saying that "Hella Good" should have been a hit on alternative? It's so not an alternative song...in fact, I can't really think of any song of theirs poppier than that one.

Honestly, I think the thing with "Hella Good" has to do with the production. If Flood or someone did it, it would sound alternative. And while it's catchy, if you think about it, the beats sound a lot like Elastica's "Connection".

And while it's catchy, if you think about it, the beats sound a lot like Elastica's "Connection". Which (coincidentally?) hasn't been played on alternative radio outside of "flashback" shows in 10 years. The forthcoming TFF single could sound exactly like former #1 hit 'Break It Down Again', and alternative still wouldn't touch it with a 39Β½ foot pole. It may be unfortunate that most alternative PD's are so closed-minded these days, but I can't say I'm entirely surprised. I do think that even if this new single goes nowhere, No Doubt will still get one last chance if and when they release another album. If nu-metal is completely dead by then, it may open the door for No Doubt again. But the forecast is doubtful. And that's my philosophical thought for the day.

No and no. "Underneath It All" is poppy but tries to be reggae too much to be more poppy than "Hella Good," and "Running" sounds more like a video game than anything else.

Hopefully, they will help this song on the Hot 100. I dont think any of the singles off the last album besides "Hella Good" were alternative sounding

Didn't 'Don't Let Me Down' make the Alternative chart?

Did it chart on any chart? I'm almost sure I saw it on a chart sometime after 'Hey Baby', or at least released or something. It caused me to put it on my chart!

It hit N&A on Alt in Dec '01/Jan '02, but it didn't chart anywhere.

No Doubt hasn't had a single that should NOT have charted on the alternative chart (except maybe "running"). If "frantic" and "hey ya" can reach the 30-50 range, why can't "hey baby", "hella good", and "underneath it all"?
What year was the original released?

Well, "Hey Baby" is a real joke to promote, while everything else at the time was pop punk, arena-rock-second-rate-post-grunge, and nu-metal were at a peak, so there was no room for No Doubt. You can also say that the two Garbage singles were deserving of the Top 20. (ahem, top 5, really)

I still to this day can't believe "parade" wasn't an all-format smash! So my local pop station ended up playing 4 Garbage songs off that CD, which I'm sure rivals any station in America.

I guess "It's My Life" just got off to a good start since all the stations willing to play it added it right away... I guess it stops there though because I haven't seen it on Jump or Taking Off lately. Maybe a few more stations will slowly trickle in but I don't think it'll do as much as it's initial take off at the format would have suggested.

However, I think it's chance of making the top 50 has now passed by, which I find disappointing.

I'm thinking whatever stations that played "Hella Good" and "Underneath It All" enough to make the top 60 are the same ones playing this one. I don't any change here. Still, I'll hold out hope in can sneak in to the main chart for a week.

And I'm thinking the absolutely horrendous song called "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" never exists, and No Doubt adds three, maybe four additional hits to their alternative repertoire.

And I'm thinking the absolutely horrendous song called "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" never exists, and No Doubt adds three, maybe four additional hits to their alternative repertoire. Which still combined may not have had as much audience as "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" did on CHR-Rhythmic and Urban. Alternative plays some rap and didn't dump Limp Bizkit for releasing "N 2 Gether Now" or "Red Light, Green Light." Alternative didn't play "Simple Kind Of Life" and "Bathwater" that much (I don't know chart positions) and that was before "Let Me Blow Ya Mind." I don't think the "Rock Steady" singles belonged on Alternative, but I could see Alternative plays "It's My Life." Gwen is working with rappers on her solo album, so it seems she doesn't care if Alternative dumps No Doubt.
