Sources: Article, Gary tweets, Chart History, & the ChartData leaks that make me wonder why the heck I even bother doing Chart History digging 37 30 Nice for What 40 36 God's Plan Damn, if God's Plan outlives Nice for What, it'll probably be the first #1 single to outlive a subsequent #1 single by the same artist since Usher's "Yeah" outlived "Burn" and "Confessions" EDIT: Just realized Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" outlived "Blank Space"

Natural at #14.. damn it’s coming for top 10 It's still amazing how Imagine Dragons went from being on the way to obscurity with their second album but then Believer happened and now they have three more CHR top 5 to their name with another one on the way.

Madonna had multiple top 10s from every album she released from 1983-2000, no? Her first studio album to not produce hits was American Life, which came a full 20 years into her career. Sort of. If I remember correctly she made it around 15 ish years and then it started getting way harder. Somewhere around a Ray of Light? From there she still managed to get a few pop hits but it was never like it was before. I mean, at that point she was a legend so it didn’t matter. I don’t think she ever left the dance charts though. I’m taking about Rih possibly extending the pop hit making machine streak past 15 maybe. I think the potential is there because she’s never lost the “coolest person in any room” quality. Maybe. We’ll see. I'm not getting what you mean. Madonna had two top 5s ("Frozen" and "Ray of Light") off her Ray of Light album. She then came back with Music, that had a #1 and another top 5. It might have become 'harder' for her to get hits in the 90s than in the 80s, but she was still consistently getting hits. Keep in mind Rihanna had a bit of a letdown with Rated R until "Rude Boy" brought her back. Talk That Talk was inconsistent with its hits and ultimately 'only' had two top 10s. Didn't Unapologetic only have two top 10s, too? At that point Rihanna was in a run similar to Madonna in the 90s.

Some people like to compare her success to Mariah, but I believe Rihanna is bigger than Mariah. Mariah does have 18 #1s but none of them really achieved worldwide success( besides Fantasy ). Mariahs success is very local. The only Mariah song that has stuck around is AIWFCIY. Rihannas songs are successful worldwide. She still gets hit after hit and hasn't really declined in popularity. Rihannas success is very similar to Madonnas. I agree. In terms of commercial success/aptitude, Rihanna is more in line with Madonna with regards to worldwide hitmaker status, image/sonic reinvention and overall consistency and longevity. Taylor Swift is more in line with Mariah Carey, in all honesty, albeit without the Hot 100 hits, but their dominance on the North American (particularly U.S) market at their respective peaks were phenomenal. ... [The only thing they don't have on their comparisons is the "sales" which wouldn't be fair to compare anyhow]. ... Lady Gaga is following a more Cher-like career trajectory. Her success in music has been very scattered following her massive peak (2009-2011) but her transition into other entertainment mediums ala. Film/Television is being met with success. She also has a very dedicated fanbase that helps keep her relevant enough. Katy Perry reminds me of this generations Cyndi Lauper/Paula Abdul to be honest. Artists with huge Pop peaks but the longevity factor is lacking. (That could change but I wouldn't be so sure). Beyonce reminds me of Tina Turner in the sense that even though the hits have stopped coming she can still draw massive, record-breaking crowds through touring due to her great performance abilities. She's also become 'Prince'-like in that her albums are becoming less mainstream/hyper-commercial. She also remains a media staple in the U.S, her biggest market.

Didn't Unapologetic only have two top 10s, too? At that point Rihanna was in a run similar to Madonna in the 90s. "Rated R" underperformed in comparison to the massive peak that was "Good Girl Gone Bad" but she still had two top tens prior to "Rude Boy". As for "Talk That Talk", only four songs were serviced as official singles: "We Found Love, You Da One, Talk That Talk & Where Have You Been". ("Birthday Cake & Cockiness" were originally Urban-radio only singles). P.S. "You Da One" was COMPLETELY overshadowed by "We Found Love". "Unapologetic" was similar. With Rihanna, since "LOUD", she has let herself down in that she stops promoting her singles after the first two releases. The rest are usually met with scattered, random video release dates and performances usually when the single cycle itself is over or before the cycle even begins and then they're abandoned. It's AMAZING she gets as much hits as she does with how much she, somewhat, "sabotages" herself. This is also why she's never had a #1 debut on the Hot 100. She always released her lead singles at random times during the respective tracking weeks which cannibalised full-week sales/streams. Only Girl: Wednesday release. We Found Love: Tuesday release. Diamonds: Tuesday release. WORK: Wednesday release.

Madonna may not have been as big in the late 90s as she had been in the late 80s but 'Ray of Light' produced two top 5 hits and another #11 single. Her next album, 'Music' in 2000 (17 years into her top 40 career), yielded a #1 hit, a #4 hit, and a #23 hit. The next album in '02 had a top ten hit and a #37 single. Her next three albums (through 2012, nearly 30 years in) yielded one top ten hit each. And Rihanna was in a low point (by her standards) in 2015. Her first new singles in 3 years ("Four Five Seconds", "Bitch Better Have My Money", and "American Oxygen") were underperformers for her. No album materialized and those singles were never included on an album. It felt like an aborted era. She needed "Work" to work, and luckily for her it did! If her next single isn't fire there will be rumblings she's passé, and she will have to hustle for hits the way Madonna did in the mid-2000s.

Sad isn't even a rap song. It's R&B. It's labeled pop on iTunes/Apple Music as well.

Their album sales are monstorous and it is always an event when they drop an album.

Mariah having a few 100+ million viewed videos doesn't make her more successful than Whitney nor Celine. Admit it or not, but Mariah isn't a huge Worldwide artist. Her success is very local. Rihanna, Madonna, Whitney, Celine, Adele, Lady gaga, and The Beatles are HUGE worldwide artist.

She's the biggest Western Female artist in that territory ever. She's also had strong success in Oceania. The difference is that during her peak Carey never quite "dominated" Europe, particularly the U.K; France; Germany (and these are several of the top six biggest music markets), the way her peers did. Latin America also.

Mariah having many hits with continued popularity means something as well. And really, "AIWFCIY" is as big as any hit by Whitney or Celine. Mariah had two albums sell over 20 million copies worldwide. You are completely shortchanging her success. My point was not to criticize Whitney or Celine, it was to address you undermining Mariah. "We Belong Together" remains huge, too. It's over 300 million views on YouTube and 100 streams on Spotify.

Katy Perry reminds me of this generations Cyndi Lauper/Paula Abdul to be honest. Artists with huge Pop peaks but the longevity factor is lacking. (That could change but I wouldn't be so sure). I wouldn't compare Katy to Cyndi or Paula: -Number 1s Katy: 9 Cyndi+Paula: 8 -Top 10s Katy: 14 Cyndi+Paula: 16 -Top 40s Katy: 22 Cyndi+Paula: 21 -UK number 1s Katy: 5 Cyndi+Paula: 0 With Perry being a product of the digital era it's clear as to why she ammased more general "hits" overall, however I'm moreso speaking on the trajectory of her career in comparison to them. Cyndi Lauper was the face of the early-1980's, post-Disco, New Wave/Synth-Pop movement and released two massive albums during that time: "She's So Unusual" & "True Colors". Her image at that time was also very distinctive in that she featured a variety of hair colors, eccentric clothing and visually appealing, colorful music videos. Similar to Lauper, Katy Perry was one of the primary faces of the Dance-Pop/Electro-Pop movement of the 2010's and also released two massive albums in that period: "Teenage Dream" & "Prism". Her image and iconography can be argued that it was similar to Laupers during her peak. Post-"True Colors", Lauper released "A Night To Remember" which was a general failure much like how Perry's "Witness" was a general failure. Lauper was never quite able to establish herself musically and commercially thereafter. If Perry faces a similar fate then it wouldn't be too farfetched to say she has had a 'Lauper-like' peak. ... As for Paula Abdul, she released two massive albums before gradually fading into obscurity: "Forever Your Girl" and "Spellbound". "Forever Your Girl" was arguably the "Teenage Dream" of that period. 4 huge #1's and an oustanding top 10 to 5 huge #1's and a re-release with follow up hits. "Spellbound" amassed two big hits (Rush, Rush) and so did "Prism" (Roar, Dark Horse) Now, I know Perry had a relatively big debut album which helped set precedence but nevertheless. As I said, again, however, Perry could bounce back and even if she doesn't her name will still be relevant through other means she may pursue.

I think where we are losing each other is I’m talking about pop hits as in pop airplay and you are talking about Hot 100 peaks? There’s nothing wrong with using the Hot 100 BTW, it’s just that I was trying to get at how long a female can last as a pop radio darling. Does that explain it better? Madonna had multiple high Hot 100 charting songs but not as many true radio hits after a while ... kinda like Taylor Swift’s latest album. She was an icon and sold very well, got lots of attention but she wasn’t dominating pop radio like she had before, and the younger side of the pop audience wasn’t super excited about her. That’s what I meant. I’m not trying to anger Madonna fans or anything. She’s a freaking legend lol. Rihana’s Kanye collab inspired slump is a fair point to make. She recovered strongly so I kinda forgot shrugged it off but it was a big deal at the time.

If you're talking pop peaks, then your point makes even less sense as Rihanna's track record at pop radio has become really spotty as of late. She hasn't had a #1 there in 5 years, and her last 3 albums haven't contained more than 2 pop top 10s each.

I had just assumed because I heard Work and Love on the Brain contstantly for a while there they had peaked high on pop radio. Same with Wild Thoughts (though it wasn’t really her song I guess). The only other song I remember being released after her last album was Lemon, and I agree that wasn’t a big hit..I’m probably missing something else. Still that’s 3 huge songs in the last few years so I think she’s pretty solid right now.

"Diamonds" and "Stay" then did well, but "Right Now" and "What Now" missed the top 10. The 5 songs released from "B*tch Better..." to "Needed Me" produced only 1 top 10 at Top 40 ("Love on the Brain").
