Cardi is slaying this year. Really happy for her. I can't stand the song anymore though, lol. Really happy Youngblood reached top 10, here's to hoping it can climb even higher.
So glad Perfect continues its insane run, go King Ed.

Sorry! I had just assumed because I heard Work and Love on the Brain contstantly for a while there they had peaked high on pop radio. Same with Wild Thoughts (though it wasn’t really her song I guess). The only other song I remember being released after her last album was Lemon, and I agree that wasn’t a big hit..I’m probably missing something else. Still that’s 3 huge songs in the last few years so I think she’s pretty solid right now. Between "We Found Love" and "Where Have You Been" three songs missed the top 10 at Top 40. "Diamonds" and "Stay" then did well, but "Right Now" and "What Now" missed the top 10. The 5 songs released from "B*tch Better..." to "Needed Me" produced only 1 top 10 at Top 40 ("Love on the Brain"). Thank you! So was Work more of an urban radio phenomenon then? Because I swear I couldn’t get away from that song for a long stretch there LOL

"Killshot" was easily the best debut this week. Worst... Probably the Lil Baby one.

It will be quite hard for perfect to survive this week because of the debut of falling down and new patek rising. Probably will hang on but who knows. Hopefully it can hold on longer than shape of you did (59 weeks) but probably not. As much as i hate shape of you perfect was okayish

Katy's career reminds me of Olivia Newton-John's.
They both were relevant in mainstream for just under 1 decade, and have some very huge hits that could even be argued as notable classics, but artist wise they didn't really leave any big impact behind.
They don't have near the legacy of the other huge females in music during their time, they both lack acclaim (albeit Olivia did win some GRAMMYs), both were poster-faces for the safest commercial female pop of their time.

The obsession with trying to force every 2000s female pop star into a 'match' with a past diva's career is really just confirmation to me that this generation has few (or no) real legends of its own. Between "We Found Love" and "Where Have You Been" three songs missed the top 10 at Top 40. "Diamonds" and "Stay" then did well, but "Right Now" and "What Now" missed the top 10. Because I swear I couldn’t get away from that song for a long stretch there LOL Yeah, Work was #1 for 8 weeks on urban and 7 weeks on rhythmic (Mediabase). She was an absolute beast on those two formats. It did manage to peak at #8 on pop though. LOTB came after Needed Me. Rihanna has always had a somewhat spotty record when you think about it. Every album would have at least one miss, sometimes two. And I'm not talking 'the era's closing so who cares' flop, but smack dab in the middle of the album's run. The sheer volume and quickness of material is what pulled her ahead. I personally don't find her that comparable to Madonna for this reason alone. Madonna had 17 consecutive top 10 hits; she could pretty much do no wrong until about '92 or '93.

I'm not seeing the correlation lol. Moreso just has to do with the fact music charts have now been around for such a long time that any current career trajectory has likely been experienced by another past artist to some degree. Versus when older artists careers were happening, music charts were relatively new. Also 'current' music genres that are prominent today basically all just started within the last 30-60 years. The perception of artists from previous generations being the 'first' to do of genres and 'first' to have certain chart runs/achievements, makes them seem more legendary. However just because an artist that comes after wasn't the 'first' of a genre, or 'first' to have a career that achieved X-Y-Z doesn't mean they will never be legendary.

As much as i hate shape of you perfect was okayish The song needs to fuck off, so I can rest assured that God's Plan will be the Year-End #1. It's crazy how radio-fueled songs can have longevity on the charts even if they're pretty much nonexistent in other metrics.

"Without You" says hi. Your post is interesting to me since Mariah has a dozen videos over 100 million views on YouTube, which is more than Madonna, Whitney, and Celine. But let's get back to the current Hot 100. Without you is her 2nd biggest song overall. It still was only at #3 on the worldwide charts during its year. Whitneys( I will always love you ) has more views than any Mariah video and has sold WAY more in sales. Celine dion( My heart will go on ) sold more than any Mariah song as well. Mariah having a few 100+ million viewed videos doesn't make her more successful than Whitney nor Celine. Admit it or not, but Mariah isn't a huge Worldwide artist. Her success is very local. Rihanna, Madonna, Whitney, Celine, Adele, Lady gaga, and The Beatles are HUGE worldwide artist. LOL I wouldn't call her success "very local", she's huge in Australia, Latin America and in Asia. She isn't Ashanti. She has different hits that made her an icon in different markets (AIWFCIY, Without You, My All, WBT, or even I Wanna Know What Love Is is big). And I don't think it is right to compare Lady Gaga, Rihanna or Adele's current WW success to Mariah's current status. They are at their peaks and she's like 20 years ahead of them. Back in the day, in early/mid 90's, she also had WW dominance. As for Whitney and Celine, having that one song that has sold a bit more doesn't make them more successful overall as well. How do we define success anyway? Longevity? Sales? Popularity? Songwriting? I think they are all successful artists and underrating their success by comparing apples and oranges is very unnecessary.

Madonna had 17 consecutive top 10 hits; she could pretty much do no wrong until about '92 or '93. "Spotty" or not, Billboard named her the 'Greatest Pop Songs Artist' for a reason. She has more #1's, top 5's, top 10's, top 40's and overall entries on the format for a reason and is FAR AHEAD of any of her peers. The rate at which she released her songs is absolutely irrelevant because they easily could have all flopped, and none would be the wiser, but they didn't. Of course, in the U.S that is, her track record isn't 'directly comparable' to what Madonna's was during her peak, but she's accumulated the largest amount of hits in a short space of time which is similar to what Madonna (and Mariah Carey to an extent) did. Furthermore, on a WW scale, especially in Europe/Oceania, no other artist has as much as hits as Rihanna has this century. She's literally second to Madonna in terms of Global #1 hits overall among Female acts and could easily surpass her someday even. Both Rihanna and Madonna are known for being the hitmaking behemoths of their time.

I think where we are losing each other is I’m talking about pop hits as in pop airplay and you are talking about Hot 100 peaks? There’s nothing wrong with using the Hot 100 BTW, it’s just that I was trying to get at how long a female can last as a pop radio darling. Does that explain it better? Madonna had multiple high Hot 100 charting songs but not as many true radio hits after a while ... kinda like Taylor Swift’s latest album. She was an icon and sold very well, got lots of attention but she wasn’t dominating pop radio like she had before, and the younger side of the pop audience wasn’t super excited about her. That’s what I meant. I’m not trying to anger Madonna fans or anything. She’s a freaking legend lol. Rihana’s Kanye collab inspired slump is a fair point to make. She recovered strongly so I kinda forgot shrugged it off but it was a big deal at the time. If you're talking pop peaks, then your point makes even less sense as Rihanna's track record at pop radio has become really spotty as of late. She hasn't had a #1 there in 5 years, and her last 3 albums haven't contained more than 2 pop top 10s each. Her music, since 2012, has become less 'Pop-oriented' and from more 'Urban-centric'. Rihanna has literally switched from being a primary 'Pop radio beast' between 2005-2011 to now being a primary 'Urban/Rhythmic radio beast' post-2012. Pop radio is still extremely stubborn in playing crossover urban songs so, in regards to Rihanna, I don't know why we'd expect songs such as "Work", "Needed Me" etc. to be #1 smashes on the format anyway. The only reason why they charted as high as they did is because... she's Rihanna. "Wild Thoughts" peaked at #4 (higher than "I'm The One") because she's Rihanna. No other DJ Khaled track (bar the former) has ever hit the top 10 on Pop radio. What other female artist would take "WORK" (a heavy patois-based song that people deemed "gibberish") to #8 on Top 40 radio and "Needed Me" to #14 on Top 40 radio in 2016? Moreover... Rihanna has had more success on Pop radio than most of her peers since 2014. Lady Gaga and Katy Perry's last eras bombed on Pop radio; the only one seeing relative success on the format today is Taylor Swift and her track record has become extremely "spotty" following the colossal 1989 era. Adele also but we'll have to see how her next era performs too. Beyonce isn't even a question.

Rihanna, Madonna, Whitney, Celine, Adele, Lady gaga, and The Beatles are HUGE worldwide artist. Mariah Carey's biggest Global market is Asia: Japan. She's the biggest Western Female artist in that territory ever. She's also had strong success in Oceania. The difference is that during her peak Carey never quite "dominated" Europe, particularly the U.K; France; Germany (and these are several of the top six biggest music markets), the way her peers did. Latin America also. I think that probably has something to do with something we've discussed in these forums before, how divisive the music scene was between the US and the UK/Europe in the 90s. The US was more into R&B and hip-hop, Europe was more into Europop. Therefore, Mariah didn't cross over into the rest of the world as much as she probably would have if she'd started out in the 80's. That being said, she still amassed a very respectable number of UK top 10 hits. In fact, many of her songs that didn't make the US top 10 made the UK top 10, like "Anytime You Need a Friend", "Open Arms", "When You Believe", and, later, songs like "Through the Rain" and "It's Like That".

It will be quite hard for perfect to survive this week because of the debut of falling down and new patek rising. Probably will hang on but who knows. Hopefully it can hold on longer than shape of you did (59 weeks) but probably not. As much as i hate shape of you perfect was okayish The song needs to f**k off, so I can rest assured that God's Plan will be the Year-End #1. It's crazy how radio-fueled songs can have longevity on the charts even if they're pretty much nonexistent in other metrics. "Perfect" was #34 on Streaming Songs for the chart week, so I wouldn't say it's 'nonexistent' outside radio.
