Rihanna has had more success on Pop radio than most of her peers since 2014. Lady Gaga and Katy Perry's last eras bombed on Pop radio; the only one seeing relative success on the format today is Taylor Swift and her track record has become extremely "spotty" following the colossal 1989 era. Adele also but we'll have to see how her next era performs too. Beyonce isn't even a question.

Regardless of the why, the point is that Rihanna's track record at pop has been spotty as of late. In terms of the discussion that was happening, that was (and remains) a relevant point.

She has released one album since 2012 and the majority of singles she has released since (whether standalone or part of an album cycle) have been largely Urban-centric when the musical climate was still very much Pop-oriented [circa. 2013-2016/17].

As I've already said, the "why" doesn't matter. tinawina made a post that said "I think the (potential) difference with Rhanna is that she really could make an uninterrupted run of consistant hitmaking, where she doesn't have eras where she falls out of favor and makes maybe one hit if that makes sense....Like Madonna was on top of the world for a long tme and then it suddenly got a lot harder." I replied to point out Madonna consistently had multiple top 10s from her releases from 1984-2000. In our back-and-forth tinawina then clarified they meant "pop hits as in pop airplay". I then replied to say if that's the case, Rihanna's track record is spotty. @antigonerising then echoed what I wrote. For some reason you then inserted yourself into the conversation and have started talking about Rihanna getting away from music that appeals to pop radio. Fine, but that doesn't change that her track record at pop has been spotty as of late. You are going away from the throughline of the conversation, which is consistency at pop radio. We were not having a discussion about urban radio/music.

A few random bits:

• 440 songs have charted on the Hot 100 during this calendar year of chart dates so far, with 13 charts left to go.
• 459 songs total charted on the Hot 100 during the 2017 calendar year.
• "Meant to Be" and "Perfect" are the only 2017 hold outs remaining.
• There seems to be countless "New Members" with suspect attitudes in 2018.

I'm happy for Eminem, but it's like how Nicki's "No Frauds" premiered in the top 20 while "shETHER" didn't even make the Hot 100, even though "shETHER" is a much better diss track - one of the most scathing I've ever heard (not that I hear that many).

Another good example of how quality is subjective, and how an artist's image and/or fanbase size alone can determine which song charts higher, at least initially.

Yeah, I feel like she's a good example of a more niche artist who built a big fanbase with the alt/hipster/festival crowd - and then thanks to a pop mix of a song, she crossed over to the mainstream crowd for a short time.  Given that she doesn't really put out mainstream, radio-friendly music, the mainstream success she did have was more of a fluke than something to be expected. None of this is meant to imply that she and/or her music isn't worthy of success, I'm just saying she's not pandering to a mainstream crowd with her output, and the charts reflect that.

Point being, once an alternative artist sells/charts well, there's often a lingering expectation that the attention will continue, but it usually doesn't, at least not on the main charts. I think her albums will continue to fair well upon release, but without more mainstream attention from a song that catches fire... she'll just keep doing her thing with minimal Hot 100 action.

5SOS reaches the region at last as 'Youngblood' hits No. 10 on the Hot 100, over four years after the band first made the chart.

As previously reported, 5 Seconds of Summer's "Youngblood" becomes the Australian pop-rock band's first top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, rising from No. 11 to No. 10 on the tally dated Sept. 29.

The track claims the Hot 100's top Airplay Gainer award for a third consecutive week, as it hits the Radio Songs chart's top five, pushing 7-5 with 83.2 million audience impressions, up 14 percent, in the tracking week, according to Nielsen Music. It also reaches the Digital Song Sales top five (6-5; 20,000 downloads sold, essentially even week-over-week).

"Youngblood" is the title track and second single from 5SOS' third LP, which debuted atop the June 30-dated Billboard 200. Lead single "Want You Back" spent a week on the Hot 100, at No. 61, in March; as the band toured to promote the new set, "Youngblood" was getting a noticeably stronger reaction than "Back," and Capitol Records decided instead to promote "Youngblood."

As Greg Marella, Capitol Music Group executive vp promotion, told Billboard of the track, "The band made a hit record. It connected."

Let's take a look at 10 highlights of 5SOS' journey to its first Hot 100 top 10.

April 19, 2014: A week after the band's breakthrough hit, "She Looks So Perfect," tops the Official UK Singles chart, the group makes its Hot 100 debut with the song, which goes on to reach No. 24 in June 2014. 5SOS concurrently arrives on the Billboard 200 for the first time, at No. 2 with its EP She Looks So Perfect.

As previously reported, Eminem's "Killshot" soars onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Sept. 29) at No. 3. Upon the song's arrival, Eminem earns his milestone 20th Hot 100 top 10.

Eminem's Machine Gun Kelly diss track blasts in as his 10th No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart, with 38,000 downloads sold in the week ending Sept. 20, according to Nielsen Music, and launches at No. 2 on Streaming Songs with 51.3 million U.S. streams.

The band extends its chart-stopping span atop the Hot 100 to over 11 years.
Maroon 5's "Girls Like You," featuring Cardi B, ascends to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (dated Sept. 29), as previously reported, and frontman Adam Levine is celebrating the group's return to the top.

"Reaching this milestone again is a dream for this band," Levine tells Billboard.

Maroon 5 -- which is set to play the Super Bowl LII halftime show, though the NFL has not officially announced the news yet -- earns its fourth Hot 100 No. 1, extending its career chart-topping span to over 11 years. "Makes Me Wonder" led for three weeks beginning in May 2007, followed by "Moves Like Jagger," featuring Christina Aguilera (four weeks, 2011) and "One More Night," (nine, 2012).


"We had confidence, but when you've done this for as long as we have, you are always aware that there are no guarantees until the people have spoken," Levine says. "For this to happen all these years later is truly a special gift."

As it crowns the Hot 100 (and Cardi B becomes the first female rapper with three No. 1s on the chart), "Girls" leads the Radio Songs survey for a ninth week (127.6 million in airplay audience, according to Nielsen Music) and ranks at No. 4 on Digital Song Sales (21,000 sold) and No. 10 on Streaming Songs (25.4 million U.S. streams).

The song is the first pop hit to top the Hot 100 since Camila Cabello's "Havana," featuring Young Thug, on the chart dated Jan. 27, ending a record 34-week streak of rap No. 1s.

Madonna may not have been as big in the late 90s as she had been in the late 80s but 'Ray of Light' produced two top 5 hits and another #11 single. Her next album, 'Music' in 2000 (17 years into her top 40 career), yielded a #1 hit, a #4 hit, and a #23 hit. The next album in '02 had a top ten hit and a #37 single. Her next three albums (through 2012, nearly 30 years in) yielded one top ten hit each.

And Rihanna was in a low point (by her standards) in 2015. Her first new singles in 3 years ("Four Five Seconds", "Bitch Better Have My Money", and "American Oxygen") were underperformers for her. No album materialized and those singles were never included on an album. It felt like an aborted era. She needed "Work" to work, and luckily for her it did! If her next single isn't fire there will be rumblings she's passé, and she will have to hustle for hits the way Madonna did in the mid-2000s.

Absolutely agree with the last part about 2015 Rihanna, which many people seem to forget. And in terms of other albums during her career, it was often very inconsistent and hit or miss as well: even with probably her biggest album, GGGB, the second single, Shut Up and Drive was a relative flop. And then with her next album, Rated R, the first two singles were only brief top tens and it looked like the album was going to fizzle out, and it took the third single, Rude Boy, several months into the era, to revive her career. A lot of her other hits, even the lead singles We Found Love and Diamonds, didn't debut huge right out of the gate and took several weeks to get to the top. So this means two things: nothing is guaranteed with Rihanna and she isn't exactly as surefire a hitmaker as many of you are making her out to be, but it also means that for many of her songs, they really earned their way to hit status, so she is not someone who just relies on her commercial name alone to achieve success.


Also, I know I'm a little late to this conversation and I haven't read all the posts in this thread, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned The Motto as one of Drake's most well-know songs. It was arguably the biggest hit from Take Care, and famous for coining the #YOLO phrase.

Actually I'm not surprised about that, if the 50.3 million YouTube views are true and imply only 1 million on-demand streams. I'm more surprised about God's Plan having a bullet while dropping 24-25 in the same chart.
