Mariah Carey's 'Merry Christmas' Replaces Her Own 'Caution' at No. 1 On Top R&B Albums Chart by Trevor Anderson
Mariah Carey becomes the first artist to replace herself at No. 1 on the Top R&B Albums chart since its inception in 2012. The diva’s Merry Christmas leaps 4-1 on the ranking dated Dec. 8 and deposes her own LP, Caution, which slips 1-8 in its second week.
Christmas, released in 1994, earned 24,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Nov. 29, according to Nielsen Music, while Caution netted 14,000 units.
As Christmas ascends, Carey collects her third leader on the chart, following Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse, a one-week champ in 2014 and Caution.
In addition to its Top R&B Albums coronation, Christmas also rallies 24-9 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and 50-19 on the Billboard 200.
Nearly 25 years after its debut, Christmas consistently remains one of the top performing holiday albums each year, with its success largely traceable to “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” virtually a modern standard in the holiday catalog.
“All I Want” also makes its annual return to several Billboard charts, including a 29-14 surge on the Billboard Hot 100 and a 30-8 roar on Streaming Songs. The tune also inaugurates this year’s first edition of the seasonal Holiday 100 chart in a familiar spot -- No. 1 -- for its 31st week overall.

Yeah, you and the 1.1% of consumers left who buy physical music can rejoice. It's more than 1.1%. Physical still outsells digital. Through the 10/29 Billboard charts YTD: CD Sales - 47,383,000 (-18.8%) [LY: 58,321,000] Vinyl Sales - 10,450,000 ( +14.8%) [LY: 9,102,000] Other Sales - 290,000 ( +4.6%) [LY: 277,000] = cassettes Digital Sales - 38,983,000 (-20.3%) [LY: 48,919,000] Obviously I was being facetious. Regardless, with the U.S. population being about 330 million, in 2017 only 47+ million CDs were sold. Obviously those were not 47 million indviduals buying (i.e. many people bought more than 1 CD across the year). So, at best we’re talking 10% of the U.S. population bought a CD last year. Meanwhile, we know that there are over 50 million paid users of streaming. Data tells us over 20 million people also use those paid accounts because they are family/friends. And then we know something like 30 million people use free streaming services. Those numbers are like a year old so it’s all surely grown, but that still gives you nearly 100 million people total. That WAY outmbers the amount who still buy any physical product. That was more my point.

^I figured you were after I posted that.
But still, 95+ million physical product should not be dismissed. It's still a lot of $$.

^Was it the year-end issue? I guess it must have been, because all the year-end charts also came out this week. When does the print issue come out? Friday?

They can't possibly publish the 12/15/2018 article until they get the 12/8/2018 BB 200 sorted out. I mean, they do mention the non-debuting albums previous week's positions ...

The original BB200 for 12/8 has already been published. (Online it hasn't but in print it has) 12/15 is independent of 12/8 unless they are overhauling how the system they use to measure or they find something affects all weeks.
Doubtful that the difference between #1 and #2 for 12/15 will be as close

The Bible’s chart saga continues, as it’s announced that chart information is “currently unavailable” this week in the wake of the 6ix9ine-Travis Scott chart battle mess and legal wrangling heats up around the result.
The following message appeared on the Nielsen site:
Notice: The Charts and all chart related features are currently unavailable for Week 48 2018 forward. This functionality will return soon.
Week 48 ended on 11/29, the week in which #1 has been in dispute between Travis Scott and 6ix9ine. After withdrawing its initial chart with Travis Scott at #1, Nielsen has not yet released “corrected” numbers for last week. Without publishing a chart for Week 48, Nielsen is unable to publish this week’s numbers with a week over week trend or ranking.
Oh, brother. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
We’re told real lawsuits—with real litigators—were threatened last Friday in a series of meetings between Sony, Billboard, Nielsen and Create Music Group (the distributor of 6ix9ine’s Dummy Boy) over Nielsen’s inability to supply accurate backup for all DSPs, especially Tidal and SoundCloud. Given that they already went to press with Travis Scott at #1, how could they possibly make it up to 6ix9ine? Meanwhile, Atlantic must also be furious, as Meek Mill isn’t getting the publicity he deserves for debuting at #1.
WTF is going on at Nielsen? They have a huge reputation to protect but aren’t giving up the details. Now is the time for the labels to insist on full transparency, including detailed reports for ALL accounts. Stop dumping multiple reporters into “other” strata. Labels can’t even get their own numbers for many accounts. Is UMG’s contract with Nielsen still month to month?
Who’s the wheel of this debacle? The methodology has never been this messed up—where are Bill Wardlow or even John “Boombox Boy” Amato? The current bunch is more clueless than ever.

Mariah Carey's 'Merry Christmas' Replaces Her Own 'Caution' at No. 1 On Top R&B Albums Chart by Trevor AndersonMariah Carey becomes the first artist to replace herself at No. Legend! It's very hard to have a 30 year career and still matter. Lasting is the true testament of a career. Most of these ppl now have jobs not a career. Hot for a moment and then on to the next hot one!

Both 21 and Creedence Clearwater Revival's Chronicle will have to wait to get to 400 weeks in the Billboard. Take Care reached 300 weeks.
