I'm not a Nicki Minaj fan, but it's that pressure that drove her to do all she could to score a #1 debut. When Jay Z and Beyonce's album debuted at #2, people mocked them so much so that they sent a formal request to Billboard to list the album under "the Carter's" and not "Jay Z & Beyoncè" or "Beyoncè & Jay Z." If the album had performed much better, I'm sure they wouldn't have made it a point to make that distinction because that would added one more #1 album to each of their total. Artists already deal with enough pressure in ensuring they make songs/albums that fans and critics will love, now there's the added pressure of how said album will perform - at least in it's first week and if some artists didn't care before, they sure as hell will now. You're absolutely right. All it does is create unnecessary pressure for certain artists. I'm surprised Billboard is just folding their arms and watching it happen. lol the album was released as "the carters", so it was charted as "the carters". that's all. stop with atrl/stan twitter fantasy.

When I got the album off iTunes, it was credited as Beyonce & Jay Z, although I can see that it's credited as The Carters now. Also, I could have sworn I saw a tweet from chartdata that stated that the album wouldn't count towards Beyonce and Jay Z's album count and that happened like a day after Billboard posted the final numbers. Here's the tweet. Kanye and Jay Z released Watch the Throne as the name of their collaborative album together and they were referred to as the Throne during that period, but that album counts for the both of them as Jay Z and Kanye. Same thing with Eminem and Royce da 5'9'' and their Bad and Evil album. Their group is called Bad and Evil, but their album counted for the both of them. Again with Kanye and Kid Cudi with Kids See Ghosts - name of album and group, but the album counts for both Kanye and Kid Cudi. ATRL fantasy aside, I believe Beyonce and Jay Z would have had the album count for the both of them under their respective names if it had debuted at #1, but that's just me.

Believe it or not, there are still no-bulls**t artists out there who play clean and this is unfair to them. Billboard is basically forcing them to join the gimmick or get run over by it. It's an unnecessary pressure on artists. Hey, you fool, writing and producting your own music isn't enough. Hit songs and albums are not enough. You and your team better come up with the freshest hats, t-shirts, hoodies, chains, makeup, perfumes, condoms,/sex toys (?) etc. or this kid right here might take #1 album away from you. How can anyone be ok with this? These gimmicks are already out of control and they will get much worse if Billboard doesn't do something. It stopped behind enough when people started downloading music for free, and now streaming music for a subscription which essentially makes music worthless in the eye of the consumer. Most artists know the music is promotion for things like merch and tours. Few musicians make money off of the actual music.

Also, The “official” credit stuff is bullshit anyway. Regardless of what Billboard or Hits dictates, we can count the Carters album toward their total just like we would Watch The Throne.

@chartdata is just a chart fan with a Twitter account. He gets all his info from chart message boards/websites.

I'm sorry, but smoke and mirrors games are not a solution - the only thing they accomplish is make Billboard charts more meaningless and unreliable. I'm not against artist doing discounts, selling CDs on their web sites or tours, as long as the product is sold individually. But tour and merch bundles are a big no. The fact that artists and labels feel the need to attach album to a ticket, t-shirt, hat or whatnot proves that they don't have confidence in product. So they indulge is shady shenanigans. Call it manipulation, inflation, cheating, whatever. It needs to stop.

The charts are a game. Lots of artists release music and tour with no interest in or expectation of getting to number one. Artists upset at "gimmicks" are the same ones who play the same game and just don't play it as well. Was it unfair to 70s rock bands when telegenic stars like Duran Duran and Madonna made music videos? Was it fair when Mariah Carey sold her singles for 49 cents? Was it fair when artists released multiple music videos and remixes to get to number one? I'm sure lots of people bought Travis' merch because they wanted the album and saw that bundles as a deal they couldn't pass up. If Travis is popular enough to pull that off then more power to him. If Tekashi cared THAT much about a number one album he wouldn't have released on Tuesday. But of course he has bigger concerns right now, so playing the chart game is not his priority.
If Travis doesn't have the number one single, then it's probably partly due to the non-stop teaser videos Ariana released, and the speculation over which Kardashian would be in the video. Is that fair to him? It doesn't matter, it just means she played the singles game better than anyone else this week. And he played the album game well. That's how it works. People wanted the album, people bought the album, and he's number one. Artists have to do whatever they can to sell records these days.

If the sales are fake then that should be discounted, but if people are buying a t-shirt and get the album with it then they still have the album. It's promotion and a sale...no one forced them to buy the march. How is "buy a t-shirt and get my album" any different than "buy my album and get a t-shirt"? Artists have added incentives for decades including posters, stickers, t-shirts, etc. with CDs (back when people bought physical product).

With everybody streaming these days, traditional buy the album for 9.99 as a stand alone item won't work for all anymore.
They obviously have to find new ways to move the product as the old ways aren't working anymore
It is moving music and getting exposure for the artist, none of this is a bad thing

Billboard have rules and regulations and always make new one to prevent "gaming". that's all some are asking. make it more fair. just like they made new minum price rule or decide not to count club sales or samsung sales and ticket sales as album sales and so on. (also no travis fan bought merch thinking album when they use streaming. lol) and for other post. yes, buying t shirt and CD is different action for "music chart". the act is different, which has been used many times by billboard not to count ticket sales and samsung sales and many more. just use same rule for merch bundle(which currently don't need redeem), is it really too much to ask?

Why does HITS hate Billboard? Is it because one is the standard and the other isn't? Or is there something else?

If the sales are fake then that should be discounted, but if people are buying a t-shirt and get the album with it then they still have the album. It's promotion and a sale...no one forced them to buy the march. How is "buy a t-shirt and get my album" any different than "buy my album and get a t-shirt"? Artists have added incentives for decades including posters, stickers, t-shirts, etc. with CDs (back when people bought physical product). Yeah... Not comparable. I just bought 'Christmas is Here!' from Target. It came with a poster that was basically a blown-up version of the album cover. It's just an extra in the case. Whereas, the album has become the free product. The merchandise is the draw. Not the music. Not the album. At least with ticket bundles, it's still the music. As others have pointed out, this is a slippery slope. At this point, Phillip Defranco could release an album and sell a ton of copies because he bundled it with merch. Smosh should've done it too. They could've been Top 10 on the album charts instead being regulated to the comedy charts. Kendall Jenner should put out some makeup and clothing and give an album for free.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/8487688/travis-scott-astroworld-returns-to-no-1-billboard-200Travis Scott's 'Astroworld' Returns to No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart, 6ix9ine's 'Dummy Boy' Debuts at No. 212/2/2018 by Keith Caulfield Plus: Michael Bublé has two albums in the top five, “Love” and “Christmas.” Travis Scott’s Astroworld album takes advantage of a sleepy chart week in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, as his former leader returns to the No. 1 slot for a third nonconsecutive week in charge. The set earned 71,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Nov. 29 (up 60 percent), according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 31,000 were in album sales (up 816 percent). The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Dec. 8-dated chart -- where Astroworld returns to No. 1 -- will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, Dec. 4. Astroworld, which spent its first two weeks at No. 1 (Aug. 18-25), has yet to depart the top 10 in its 17 weeks on the list. Its move to No. 1 on the new chart was prompted largely by Scott releasing more than two dozen merchandise/album bundles for Cyber Monday (Nov. 26) through his official website. Each of items -- including a keychain, hats, T-shirts, hoodies and so forth -- came bundled with a digital copy of the Astroworld album.
Astroworld sold 31,000 albums in the latest tracking week -- up 816 percent. Of that sum, 29,000 were in download sales (up 4,285 percent). Also aiding Astroworld’s gain: the Nov. 28 arrival of a new Skrillex remix of the set’s smash single “Sicko Mode,” which held at its No. 2 high on the most recently published Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Dec. 1). At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, 6ix9ine’s Dummy Boy debuts from just three days of activity in the tracking week. The 13-track set was released on Tuesday, Nov. 27 and starts with 66,000 equivalent album units (of which 10,000 were in album sales). The set was previously slated for release on Nov. 23, but was delayed due to 6ix9ine’s incarceration. On Nov. 18, 6ix9ine was arrested by ATF and Homeland Security agents on six counts of various racketeering, firearms, assault with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy murder charges. On Nov. 26, he pleaded not guilty to the charges and will face trial in September 2019. Michael Bublé has a bountiful week on the Billboard 200, as he places two albums in the top five. His new studio set Love dips from No. 2 to No. 3 in its second week (58,000 units; down 48 percent) while Michael Bublé 's former No. 1 album Christmas, originally released in 2011, zooms from No. 20 to No. 5 (44,000 units; up 56 percent). Bublé is just the second act in 2018 to chart two concurrent titles in the top five, following XXXTentacion, who logged a pair of albums in the region on the list dated July 7, following his death on June 18. On the July 7 chart, his former No. 1 album ? was No. 2, while his 17 album ranked at No. 5. Christmas spent five weeks in a row at No. 1 on the Dec. 10, 2011 through Jan. 7, 2012-dated charts. The album has returned to the top 10 of the Billboard 200 every holiday season since its release. Christmas hadn’t ranked as high as it does this week since the Jan. 5, 2013 chart, when it also placed at No. 5. Since December of 2016, only four acts have had two albums in the top five at the same time, as, in addition to Bublé and XXXTentacion this year, Future and Pentatonix also achieved the feat in that span. Future did it twice (March 18 and 25, 2017) as a result of him releasing two new studio albums in back-to-back weeks, and both of them debuted at No. 1. His self-titled effort bowed atop the list dated March 11, 2017, while HNDRXX opened at No. 1 on March 18, 2017. On March 18, HDRNXX was No. 1, while Future was at No. 2. Then, on March 25, the Future album fell to No. 4, while HNDRXX dropped to No. 5. Pentatonix also went two weeks in a row with two albums in the top five: Dec. 31, 2016 and Jan. 7, 2017. On the Dec. 31-dated list, the act’s then-new release A Pentatonix Christmas moved 3-2, while its 2014 holiday set That’s Christmas to Me climbed 8-5. Then, on the Jan. 7-dated tally, A Pentatonix Christmas rose 2-1 (for its first of two weeks in charge), and That’s Christmas to Me held at No. 5. Back in the top five of the new Billboard 200, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born soundtrack stays steady at No. 4. The former No. 1 tallied 53,000 units (down 14 percent) in the latest tracking frame. Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody soundtrack is also a non-mover, as it holds at No. 6 with a little more than 43,000 units (down 11 percent). Pentatonix collects its ninth top 10 album, as its new 2018 release Christmas Is Here! rises 17-7 with 43,000 units (up 38 percent). Pentatonix’s nine top 10 albums have come in just over five years, as the vocal group logged their first top 10 with PTX: Vol. II on the Nov. 23, 2013-dated list when it peaked at No. 10. Rounding out the new top 10 are Drake’s former No. 1 Scorpion (holding at No. 8 with 39,000 units; down 10 percent), previous chart-topper The Greatest Showman Soundtrack (climbing 19-9 with 35,000 units; up 22 percent) and Lil Baby and Gunna’s Drip Harder (up 12-10 with 34,000 units; down 10 percent). The Showman album rises thanks to SEA and TEA units earned by a deluxe edition of the set that includes the new tracks from The Greatest Showman: Reimagined compilation (which falls 3-31 in its second week). Yeah ...indeed sketchy
