What's with the micro-aggression towards Rihanna and the status of her number one singles all of a sudden? In the U.S, she has 12 #1 singles without Drake as well as 50 weeks at #1 without him and completely obliterates any close competition on an international chart scale. Her placement as the Greatest hitmaker of the past 25 years has absolutely no bearing because of him, the same way Drake's first 10 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 no longer has bearing because of Rihanna in the grand scheme of things when he has 4 other number ones without her. It's nice that Mr. Graham is now scoring back-to-back number ones in the Streaming era because he surely COULD NOT do it when the Digital era was at its peak and when airplay stil ranked high in the chart formula. I might be wrong, but I believe @drakeisskinny was just joking. Some Rihanna fans still throw it in Drake's face that she's the only reason he blew up internationally and she made him because she gave him his first two #1's. I never see it being said here, but I see it everywhere else. Rihanna is Rihanna without Drake and Drake is Drake without Rihanna, let's just leave it at that. Well, thanks for putting it in perspective. Stans can be an outright mess at times. It's similar to how Ed Sheeran stans (and others) are saying how they've given Beyonce her biggest hit since the Bush era, or how Bradley Cooper has revived Gaga's career etc. It's all arbitrary. LOL.

kierz7 yeah, it's especially worse on other forums. It's like a cancer over on some of those sites, actually, lol. Yeah, artists like Beyoncè don't need hits to be who they are at this point in their careers. They'll drop their albums, make their impact and sell out their tours easily. Artists like P!nk and Justin Timberlake proved that this year. Even if the numbers do add up to the Perfect remix with Beyoncè being her biggest hit in a while, it doesn't mean she needed it. And as for Lady Gaga, I'd say the movie revived her career. She released tons of songs and albums before that film/movie soundtrack that did nothing. The movie and it's soundtrack also brought a renewed interest in her as a public figure. No one was really checking for her like that before it all dropped. That movie will do wonders for her acting career going forward and come award season because I believe she'll win a ton of them - both for the lead single off the soundtrack and the movie.

Sorry if this has been discussed, but what is currently known about YouTube videos counting for the Hot 100? I know the 30 second rule, have heard it has to be categorized as Music but am not sure. Are there other specifics?

Sorry if this has been discussed, but what is currently known about YouTube videos counting for the Hot 100? I know the 30 second rule, have heard it has to be categorized as Music but am not sure. Are there other specifics? I'm pretty sure it has to be "detected" as well to be counted (basically it's possible to upload a video of a song onto Youtube, even categorised under music, and for Youtube not to recognise what song it is, and therefore not be able to count its streams). I uploaded a remix of a song by Disclosure to Youtube years ago. It took a few weeks before I got the message telling me that I've used a copyrighted song, which means that in those first few weeks before Youtube "detected" that the song was being used in the video, it wouldn't have been counted for any charts. Their technology has probably changed since then though. I think the reason it took a few weeks for my song to get "detected" is because it was a remix, so the beat of it was quite different to the original. We know from UOENO by Rocko that unofficial remixes can possibly get their streams counted, although I sometimes get suspicious, because I remember Drake did a really popular remix of 2 On when it was out and I always got the feeling it wasn't getting its streams counted? I was never sure about that. I'm not sure if there's been any unofficial remixes this year that got really popular on Youtube that we could use to see if they get counted, I can't think of any, but I haven't been following current music so closely this year. I know there's Skrillex remix of Sicko Mode and an ILLENIUM remix of Without Me, but both of those are officially released by the record label, so they will 100% definitely get detected. But I'm talking about those cases where an unsigned Soundcloud rapper or up-and-coming dance producer does an unofficial remix that blows up and gets loads of streams on Youtube. I sometimes doubt if those count.

It's nice that Mr. Graham is now scoring back-to-back number ones in the Streaming era (which favours Rap/Hip-Hop so much) because he surely COULD NOT do it when the Digital era was at its peak and when airplay stil ranked high in the chart formula. I donβt get the point of your last passage. Itβs clearly attempting to discredit him for thriving in an era that favors his genre, but you could turn that around on Rihanna for thriving in an era that favored pop music. Itβs unnecessary.

Well, that's how you read into it. I was just stating mere facts. In my paragraph before the last I even said, more or less, that Drake's first two number ones with Rihanna aren't that important and no longer a heavy point of contention considering he now has 4 huge number-ones as a lead artist so it surely wasn't my intention to discredit him. Still, I can now see how it might be perceived as 'shady'.

When's the last time an artist had two singles in the top 5 of airplay (not as a featured artist)?
Probably not too long ago but curious

AIWFCIY's best chance is this year cuz of Caution. It's strange though, because if you look at it the other way, you would think that AIWFCIY would presumably help her current album she has out now, Caution, but that isn't happening at all, with it dropping 5-55-163 its first 3 weeks! Unfortunately, this clearly indicates that Mariah is a legacy artist now and that AIWFCIY is a completely separate entity, a Christmas standard that just happened to be recorded by her quite a few years ago. It almost might as well be by a different artist. So the reverse of that, Caution possibly helping AIWFCIY, since the album isn't actually successful on the charts, I don't think its "success" will help AIWFCIY much. It is clear though that the song's popularity itself, as well as the changing chart rules and the public's consumption patterns, seem to favor its chart placement more and more with each passing year, but I don't think it's quite there this year, maybe next.

I think Mariah has been a legacy act since the end of the E=MC2 era.
Any growth AIWFCIY experiences will be mostly because of streaming's growth while radio stagnates and sales die. Still very impressive.

Shame, since "Caution" has been getting praise everywhere. That being said, I don't really think any of the songs are "single" material.

I'll mildly disagree. People may not have been checking for her but whenever she did do a public performance, such as a tribute at an award show or whatever, people had been responding overwhelmingly positively, and that had been going on for a couple years. The exception was with her own music, which got minimal attention except from her fans, until the Super Bowl and with performances of Million Reasons. The movie and soundtrack definitely helped her though, but I think it came at a point where she had been building up it to through other things first. If it had come out just after Born This Way, or just after Artpop, I doubt the response would have been the same.

If it had come out just after Born This Way, or just after Artpop, I doubt the response would have been the same. You basically agreed with my point. When I said people weren't checking for her, I meant her music. You can't compare the commercial performance of Gaga's first two albums to everything she's released since then. Her career started out on a high note with her releasing two massive albums with massive singles to boot, but everything kinda went downhill from there. A Star is Born is her most commercially successful album since Born This Way in 2011. That's a LONG TIME. However, I agree with you. I don't think she would have been able to make an album like this if she hadn't gone through her ARTPOP and Joanne eras. This seemed like a sensible direction for her to go next, even if it's a soundtrack album. I guess it worked out for her. It makes me kinda wonder where she goes from here as far as her music career goes. It'll be completely obvious that the success of the movie carried the album if her next solo album doesn't do as well.

If Gaga goes back to wasting her talent on cheap electro pop, her next album will underperform. If she has learned from "A Star Is Born" experience and decides to play to her strengths again, she will do well.
Same goes for Beyonce. Another surprise gimmick and trap single won't work.
I'm most interested in Rihanna's next move, tbh.

Yeah, why would "AIWFCIY" help Caution? Because it drives traffic to her catalog, just like any other hit by any other artist.* I don't think it's a coincidence she released Caution at this time of year. Her and her team were hoping the extra attention on her during the holiday season would aide in people discovering her new album as well. And it probably is, just not enough to cause any significant dent. What I don't understand is why someone would assume the other way around is what's causing AIWFCIY to reach a new peak this year. Caution isn't exactly blazing up the charts right now. *Sort of related to the topic, my favorite instance of this was when "Who Owns My Heart" by Miley Cyrus hit the streaming chart on the same week the "Wrecking Ball" video dropped. WOMH wasn't even a US single and was 3 years old at that point, but it was the top recommended video during the week of WB's release for some reason.
