Drake SpotifyI don't deny Drake's streaming power, but this was pretty..............absurd. People were forced to listen to him. He pulled bigger streams on Apple Music than Spotify, that only lasted 2~ days out of his first week, and many of those just had a picture of him but no music on the playlist. "Spotify put the album on nearly 30 of its largest playlists as part of its first ever global artist takeover, which resulted in Scorpion being streamed 10 million times per hour." Yeah, you're right. He was streamed more on Apple, but you can't deny that this thing on Spotify was absurd. |

People in industry and fans put too much emphasis on debut week sales. Yeah, they're important, but not as much as staying power imo. This. And it's becoming more and more obvious as we go deeper into the streaming era. reputation is a perfect example of this: MASSIVE debut figures, but lagged shortly after because it couldn't keep going on the streaming end of things. Scorpion debuted with lower figures, but it has already moved more album equivalent units in the US and worldwide. |

It was absurd, but like the font you quoted said, in a lot of those playlists, there weren't any actual Drake songs - most of them just featured his face on the cover of those playlists and if you're insinuating that he somehow ever needed that boost from Spotify, you'd be widely mistaken considering the fact that Drake has been setting/breaking records on Spotify/Apple Music since 2015. He was always gonna pull massive numbers regardless. I also think it's inaccurate to say people were "forced" to listen to him. Spotify playlist placements function much like banners on iTunes. It increases visibility, yes, but people ALWAYS have a choice on clicking to engage or not. You can't "force" anyone to stream a song/album they don't wanna stream. |

Also same with 10 tracks = 1 album. In terms of albums with the most equivalents the past 2 years: Divide - 4.4 million Scorpion - 4.1 million DAMN. - 3.9 million Beerbongs - 3.5 million Reputation - 3.4 million I’d assume all above Reputation generated more revenue since they moved more equivalents. |

Artists make money depending on their contracts, along with songwriters and producers taking their own cuts. Taylor Swift uses less co-writers as far as I can tell. In the end albums and singles are petty cash compared to what merchandise, promo deals and touring bring for artists.
There's way more money in streaming though because save for Taylor and maybe Adele, no one really sells much anymore.
There's still no physical version of Cardi's multiplatinum album, for example.

Even though Taylor replaced herself at #1, the week that happened Shake It Off fell to #3 and it wasn't ever #2 while Blank Space was #1. So while it seems like Taylor would've occupied the top 2 spots given the circumstances, it didn't.

I can assure you with the rise of streaming, profits of indie artists has gone down by a lot. And B-list and C-list acts' income have decreased by a notable margin. |

Halsey becomes the first artist to rank at Nos. 1 and 2 simultaneously on Billboard's Pop Songs radio airplay chart in nearly five years, as "Without Me" spends a fourth week at No. 1 and "Eastside," with Benny Blanco and Khalid, rises 3-2 (on the survey dated Feb. 23).
Halsey is the first act to claim the top two on Pop Songs in a week since Iggy Azalea in 2014. In the chart's 26-year history, Halsey is just the fifth artist to achieve the feat.
