Cruel Summer would perform as well as Style it OOTW did. It's not what radio wants from Taylor Style and OOTW both performed very differently though. My point being that neither was the smash hit that people on here swore they would be.

Yeah, Style was amazeballs and should have been more successful. Same with OOTW. ❤️ Cruel Summer isn’t on that level imo though. It’s decent but nothing amazing.

When people point out how there are warped perspectives for what Taylor needs to do to be successful, imagine pointing to “Style” as evidence of a disappointment.

m.hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=317798HDD discuss Lover’s Grammy chances. “Taylor Swift: We expect that whatever weirdness transpired in the wake of reputation is over—Lover is a widely admired hit and should be a lock for an album nod. Will its heavy-streaming title track make the Song/Record shortlist? Could another song from the set steal the spotlight?”

I really hope Lover gets nominated for Pop and album of the year, hopefully the song might be nominated as well, and maybe the dixie chicks collab gets a nod as well?

And it did what it did all on its own. If she had been able to do a big video and promo for it, it would have been even bigger, but of course that's when her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer so understandably we got what we got.

Yep, I'd be happy if "Cruel Summer" became as big as "Style," and I also think that's a realistic expectation for the song. Fans and critics consistently cite it as one of the best on the album. It's not my favorite on the album (I'd rank 3-5 songs above it depending on my mood) but I do think it's the catchiest song on the album. I think it would be big at radio and would probably do pretty well at streaming. I love OOTW but I never saw it as a smash hit. It would've been bigger if released earlier on in the album cycle but still would not have been as big as the first five singles.

Was Style or Wildest Dreams a bigger hit? I think technically Wildest Dreams was, but I feel like Style was Billboard claims Wildest Dreams was a bit bigger on the Hot 100 but Style did about 10% better in digital song sales and charted the same amount of weeks in the top 10 and top 50 (and five more weeks overall). Wildest Dreams did a bit better on radio and streaming though. They're both solid hits in my book though, much bigger than Out of the Woods and almost as big as Bad Blood. IMO Style was significantly bigger than ME! so if she can more Style sized singles that would definitely be a good thing. Not sure what song has the best shot at being a hit these days. It's not 1989 era where catchy bops are what's trendy, more subdued pop songs tend to do better these days. Lover is pretty subdued but has a very throwback sound rather than a trendy one. It might still do well, but hard to say for sure. False God, Afterglow and Cornelia Street are my favorites of the other subdued songs. But who knows, maybe enough of the GP is looking for a change from the current sound and would be down for bops like I Think He Knows, Cruel Summer, Paper Rings or even The Man. We have had a few catchy or anthemic hits recently like Youngblood, Sucker and Sweet But Psycho. Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince would be in between the currently trendy sound and the bops that were popular in earlier years and also happens to be my favorite on the album. The one thing I have with Cruel Summer is that her use of melisma burns out on me but it doesn't seem to bother most other people so maybe it's ok? I'd be tempted to try Paper Rings or I Think He Knows as the cute bop that ME! tried and failed to be for the 4th single and maybe Miss Americana as the 5th?

I think they made the right decision going with "Lover" as the third single.... I think it's the song that can carry the album for months and maybe help her get some Grammy love.
I think what worries me a bit is that Republic sometimes seems to bail on an album after releasing 2-3 singles (i.e. Ariana's last two albums), so I hope that doesn't happen with Taylor's album. I think this album should have 5-6 singles. Maybe I'm in the minority but I think "Paper Rings" could do well for her.

“Style” wasn’t a chart topping hit, but of all the 1989 singles I’d argue it had the most staying power. I still hear it on the radio and out and about sometimes. “Cruel Summer” won’t do that for her, I don’t think. I’ve finally been able to do something of a ranking... God Tier: Cruel Summer, Death By A Thousand Cuts, I Think He Knows, Cornelia Street, Lover, False God Very Good: Soon You’ll Get Better, The Archer (god tier potential), Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince, Paper Rings Cute: I Forgot That You Existed, The Man, London Boy, Its’c Nice To Have A Friend ...: ME!, You Need To Calm Down Undecided: Afterglow, Daylight 😐

No way "Paper Rings" should be released. Why? Incredible hook, has that folksy hipster vibe that still sneaks its way into the market now and again, damn near limitless rom-com soundtrack potential... I don’t see it being a massive chart topper, but I see it being lucrative long-term.

It's easily one of my favourites but I don't think it would do her any favours in the long term. (now, if she recorded a country version, I'd say do that and release it)

I think Cruel Summer has a super high burn rate tbh. You hear the first chorus and you basically already know what’s coming the rest of the song.
Still love it but query whether it’s a good single choice.

On the contrary, Cruel Summer has a much lower burn and much more replay ability factor than songs like Out of the Woods, Me, Ready For It, and Bad Blood to me. Definitely one of the few songs you can leave on repeat.
I don’t think the structure of Cruel Summer lends to burn — it’s not a very monotonous song, and there’s a lot of hooks that keep things moving forward. It’s also not that long.

^ I don’t know if this is really unpopular. Personally, apart from “Lover”, “The Man” and mayyyybe “Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince”, I don’t see any potential hits.

The thing I'm loving the most about this album here is that it's not very difficult to find 18 different people with 18 different favorite songs even if two of them is YNTCD and ME!. Speaks loads for the quality of the work.

I also feel like that there might not be anymore singles after Lover. The Man is clearly the next single. I Forgot That You Existed and Death By A Thousand Cuts would work well for radio too. Basic and bop-able. Cruel Summer is she wants to go that deep. She’s an album’s artist at this point anyways. It’s just tragic that she took up two spots with the trash leads.

I think Paper Rings could be huge actually. It’s so unexpected. It’s essentially what I imagined pop Taylor would be like pre-1989. Insanely catchy, with a folkish/rockish tinge. And that classic Taylor writing. It’s definitely one of the highlights for me and I think it’s possible radio could respond really well to it.
Really, they have a ton of great options for radio and I don’t think there is any way they are cutting this off after Lover. Cornelia Street, The Man, Afterglow, Miss Americana, Death by a Thousand Cuts, Cruel Summer - all stellar options.
