I agree with Paper Rings having potential as a single, but that might be a little biased (it's my favourite song on the album, even surpassing The Archer).

I think Paper Rings could be huge actually. It’s so unexpected. It’s essentially what I imagined pop Taylor would be like pre-1989. Insanely catchy, with a folkish/rockish tinge. And that classic Taylor writing. It’s definitely one of the highlights for me and I think it’s possible radio could respond really well to it. Really, they have a ton of great options for radio and I don’t think there is any way they are cutting this off after Lover. Cornelia Street, The Man, Afterglow, Miss Americana, Death by a Thousand Cuts, Cruel Summer - all stellar options. But one of these things is not like the others...

The thing I'm loving the most about this album here is that it's not very difficult to find 18 different people with 18 different favorite songs this is so true & I feel like a big reason "Cruel Summer" should be a single, because it's the one song I've seen almost everyone rank up high / talk highly of (besides the title track). even if two of them is YNTCD and ME!. gagging

My favorites are Lover and Paper Rings. I think they both make perfect sense as singles. Many of you are still stuck in the 1989 era tbh, that era is over.

“The Man” is a terrible single choice. Gays who stay tweeting “men don’t deserve rights” need to put the self-hatred on the back burner and realize that female empowerment anthems that could be perceived as putting down men do not historically do well. Not all women are feminists, and certainly not all men. She’d get twitter clout and a few headlines for being controversial, but she doesn’t need that (yet) and it’s completely off brand for her anyway.

^ agreed
the single choices (for me) are Paper Rings, Cruel Summer... and that’s about it? maybe Miss Americana (big maybe).
but everything else doesn’t feel like a single.

I can actually see “Paper Rings” doing something. Let’s add that to my list of the three potential singles from this album. I almost don’t want her to release “Cruel Summer” cause I think it’s gonna massively underperform and be remembered as a clunker in her career instead of a bright gold album cut.

The Man is kinda annoying, so I’m down for Paper Rings and Cruel Summer. Don’t really care after that. I do love Afterglow. ❤️

The difficulty with Taylor's albums has always been that every song is quality and radio-ready, but it's hard to pick out which ones will stick with the general public. I feel like the debut and 1989 were the only eras where the single choices were obvious.
For this album, I think "Cruel Summer," "Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince," "Paper Rings," and "Afterglow" all have hit potential, but I'm not sure I hear any really big hits. That's ok though, Taylor can still slay with a string of medium-sized hits.

If I were Taylor I would have made "YNTCD" the lead, released with the music video on May 31. Then "Cruel Summer" would be the follow-up released on July 19 or 26. Then "Lover" would be my third single, released mid-September. I would release "Paper Rings" as a promo single in October and conclude with an album release and a clever music video for "Miss Americana" on November 8.

r/TaylorSwift just did a poll of their users asking what their favorite and least favorite songs from the album were.
ME! did worst by far with 6 users having it as favorite, and 998 having it as least favorite, which is pretty amazing considering you'd usually except 1-2% troll responses.......
The biggest fan favorites are Cruel Summer, Death By A Thousand Cuts, Cornelia Street, Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince and I Think He Knows. The reception to The Man and I Forgot That You Existed is pretty lackluster.

Not to mention "The Man" doesn't even do the feminist angle well. (At least it's better than YNTCD's stance on homophobia, but that's not a high bar.) It's a cute song, but dear god please let it stay an album track.

I'd love to see her make "Cornelia Street" a single later on in the era. (Ideally, after "Cruel Summer" as the next single.) I think it'd be a risk, but hell, I think it'd be a worthy one.

My new approach to advocating for singles from my favs is 'what song do I want to hear at gay bars for the rest of my life,' and for that reason I think the following songs may work:
-None
Release whatever Taylor, I'll enjoy this album the same.

edit: apparently that list is missing style between Daylight and YNTCD.

unpopular opinion: while this is an incredible album, i hear only a couple single-worthy songs. I feel the opposite. Yes it's also incredible album but I hear like 10-12 singles, all of them capable of reaching top 10 on pop but no true smashes. After a couple weeks, here is my ranking: The Archer Death... Cornelia St Lover Cruel Summer Miss Americana Dixie Chicks Afterglow Paperrings False God I Think he Knows London Boy Daylight The Man Nice to have a friend Forgot you Existed Calm Down

Not people still overlooking Afterglow as a viable single.
I get the idea with The Man but it isn't one of my favorites. However, it has consistently been the most streamed album track after the first week so it'll likely be next.
Cruel Summer and Afterglow are musts for me.

Aside from the three songs already released, "The Man" and "Cruel Summer" are the only songs that feel like singles, imo. "The Man" was much better than I expected going in.

I don’t know why but I just can’t get into “The Man.” I love that Taylor is addressing the topic but the song just doesn’t do it for me.

However, it has consistently been the most streamed album track after the first week so it'll likely be next. Cruel Summer and Afterglow are musts for me. When it comes to last.fm repeat listens, The Man is only 9th out of the 14 new songs on the album, so it's hard to tell how much of The Man's streams come from the superior playlisting and how much comes from organic interest. The superior playlisting began within the first few hours of release, so I'm not sure how much listener data Spotify had to go on when they decided to playlist it so heavily. I wonder how much of the playlisting is label influenced - ie Republic asking for it to be playlisted because they were planning on making it the 4th sing.e Spotify playlist reach Lover: 111.172m The Man: 82.285m YNTCD: 60.945m ME!: 46.653m Cruel Summer: 21.923m The Archer: 18.128m I Forgot That You Existed: 12.484m London Boy: 5.511m Soon You'll Get Better: 5.303m Miss Americana: 4.585m I Think He Knows: 4.391m Afterglow: 4.379m Paper Rings: 4.152m Cornelia Street: 3.909m False God: 3.868m Death By A Thousand Cuts: 3.505m Daylight: 3.258m It's Nice To Have A Friend: 3.106m

I love that most of you guys are picking Afterglow recently as a potential single. Maaan that song is a grower, so atmospheric! And i feel no burnout at all. I really hope this era lasts another year cause an Afterglow release in September-October next year would be awsome!

We bonded over the fact that it is the biggest tearjerker on the album for both of us (sorry SYGB).

It’s perfection and the most real portrayal of a relationship on the album. Afterglow deserves its place in unreleased gems.
