I understand that diet options can be upsetting and potentially triggering for those who have struggled with eating disorders, but many people genuinely need sugar-free and gluten-free options, and the stores have to make them easily available on display. I know some supermarkets have dedicated diet sectors, but otherwise, there isn't much we could do here, I believe.
And it sucks that she's targeting one small business in particular, instead of just making a broad statement on her experiences.
Overall, social media doesn't seem healthy to Demi, truth be told, since it's far from the first time she's been involved in some unnecessary drama that's only taken a negative toll on her and resulted in more online hate. I hope people close to her can encourage her to take a break every now and then.
Edit: and what the hell does she mean by diet culture vultures?

I feel sorry for that poor business having to deal with this deranged, attention seeking moron. Moments like this make me genuinely question why anyone roots for her. She has zero redeeming qualities.

I have a lot of medical issues among my immediate family, including type 1 diabetes and heart conditions. I remember as a kid every party was basically off-limits (or most of my family couldn't eat at them) as well as ice cream parlors, candy shops, bakeries, etc. It's so amazing that more options are offered now. I can go more places with my family. I can go more places with friends who have allergies and stuff. I do not even really associate sugar-free with a crazy diet fad anyway. Maybe fat-free (diet) or something trendy like "keto" but sugar free feels way more medical. Like, do people, in 2021, need to explain to Demi that people have complex medical issues outside of just her? Or, does the entire world have to revolve around HER medical problems and no one elses?
On a separate note, I also have some particular triggers, but, you know what? That's on me (within reason). I cannot imagine how self-centered of a person you have to be to attack a small store like this instead of working on yourself more or just removing yourself from the situation.
Sorry if I sound mean. She just sounds like a huge asshole right now, to a small business during a pandemic, and to the wide array of loved ones I have who have medical concerns and allergies, including kids who would probably love having some options when they go into a store.

I like her but i just can’t at her sometimes. Now she’s using her voice and her big social media platform to destroy a small business because they’re doing good thing (in this case, providing sugar free food option). it's so weird. the store responded saying "we carry items for people who are diabetics, have celiac's disease, vegan, and many indulgent items as well" but she's trying to continue beefing with them. it's a confusing outrage because they're just a froyo shop that has a wide range of options?? it's like calling out Whole Foods for selling low-fat milk next to whole milk. Good for the company!!! And Demi..... Well I think it's already been said. I hope she's working on herself instead of trying to blame everything on everything for her problems.. Addicts are very selfish for awhile. It's all about them. I know, I am one.

This is all about some frozen yogurt. The privilege. Truly a "Kim there's people that are dying" moment.
Btw her #dietculturevulture hashtag thing has gotten a grand total of three posts on IG lmao.

I saw that whole IG thing, rolled my eyes and continued watching my stories. Demi, it's not that deep.

Demi is not well and this has been abundantly clear to me for years. She isn’t ready for the public right now and I really worry about the execution of how her career is being handled in relation to her mental health. It’s so hard for me to watch

I can take a charitable reading of what point she was intending to make. There are a lot of sugar-free and sugar-substitute products whose packaging really upsells guilt aspects that are clearly aimed at people seeking weight loss vs health necessities, which can be problematic and triggering. With that said, that's not the argument she articulated. Furthermore, that's more of an argument to be made to the manufacturers, not a small froyo shop. What the fuck? lol. And she's patently in the wrong here. Like total jackass level. Not a good look. Scooter needs to take her social media away and throw up a notes app apology lmao.

She made me wanna go there just to get some out of spite. This woman has never learned how to read a fucking room.
On the upside, it looks like most of their comments are supportive and in their favor instead of a flood of Lovatics threatening them.

Who gave her her social media access back? 😭
Giving me real Halsey "the hotel doesn't have shampoo for everyone" vibes.

I really hope this doesn't come across as too mean-spirited, and just a playful jab at the controversy. Despite thinking her social media presence has led to several questionable and unpleasant moments, I respect her a lot as an artist and admire her strength and resilience. Just wanted to stress that. Anyway, ATRL's thread on this situation has been a mess, and someone shared this hilarious edited tracklist poking fun at it, reminding me of the Karen version of Lana's "Chemtrails Over The Country Club" 😂

She's so dumb and unlikable. Whatever sympathy i had for her evaporated with her targeting that store.

Why does it seem that once something good happens to an artist, they do something to mess it up almost immediately? It reminds me of Lana Del Rey after her critical acclaim era. Everything was going well until her comments. I feel like a similar thing is happening to Demi right now.

Sounds like they really didn't have many things planned for her new album...since she's got enough time to fight a random froyo store instead of minding her own business. :kii:

If I want a chocolate bar, I’m not going to go to a health food store and get upset because all the chocolate bars are in the back, if there at all. I will go to literally any other store. Maybe someone should tell Demi that not all stores are for her? If it’s a treat shop that specializes in health product treats, why is she upset that they prioritize healthy treats? Maybe she could go to...any other store that doesn’t prioritize that stuff?

I hate (actually kind of love) that Demi's thread has become a discussion board for chat about sugar-free and diet options.
I was going to make a long-winded post regarding my stance on this, but I deleted it after I realized it was so not necessary, it was already well discussed, and the topic at hand is pretty fucking stupid. Proceed with your regularly scheduled programming and PM me for sugar-free snacks.
Oh, and stream her only two bops, "Sorry Not Sorry" and "Melon Cake".

If anyone is interested in what happened next, Demi proceeded to lecture the staff about clearer messaging with their food items: telling them to make the “healthy” labels more prominent. She asserted that they should be clear that these sugar-free and vegan options are aimed towards people with health needs. She goes on to imply that diet culture is bad, and healthy food options should be for people with health needs. She closes by saying they shouldn’t cater to a demographic to the exclusion of another. Personally, this whole snafu is much ado about nothing because Demi had no real cause or reason here. The store did nothing wrong by displaying sugar-free and vegan options prominently in their store. Talking about demographics, there’s a sizable segment of consumers that eat mindfully due to their health needs. The store wasn’t really playing up these healthy options to feed diet culture. They simply had them out on display, which was what Demi condemned. In my opinion, this is a terrible display for Demi. Her reaction to the sugar-free options wasn’t just tone-deaf; it was out of this world rude. I think this is a case of her scratching into some food disorder trigger and typing on her phone faster than her stopping to think if something was really wrong and settle herself down. First of all, as passionate with combating “diet culture” and eating disorders Demi may be, she is in no position to be as angry and disparaging as she was. To cry foul about a seemingly normal store display then dictate how it should display its goods is just inordinately pompous. I think maybe she might be at that point of her recovery where she’s experiencing Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome or something, which makes her irascible. Whatever it is, I’m gonna leave this ugliness behind and hope that someone gave her a reality and respect check. It’s a shame that she couldn’t just enjoy her day because her succeeding stories of a beach trip look fun for her and her friends.

Everything was going well until her comments. I feel like a similar thing is happening to Demi right now. Oh man, I feel like every female artist I like is like this, all the way back to Christina Aguilera, through Lady Gaga, and Lana Del Rey. Like, sometimes I just want them to STOP TALKING. But yeah, the fact that she is doubling and tripling down and this upset even after the event in question really shows how unwell she really is. Like, the initial reaction was self-centered and dumb, but I can imagine being triggered, panicking, and shooting something off before thinking, then later reflecting once calmer. Instead of reflecting, she has dug her feet in and made even more outrageous claims. I really, really hope she is still in intensive therapy.

Demi really puts the labor in the phrase labor of love. I said several years ago that I would always root for her, and I do, but goddamn does she make it difficult.
I do admittedly wonder if her strokes have permanently impaired her cognitive abilities (two signs of cognitive impairment are emotional instability and trouble exercising good judgment). She already wasn't great at properly dealing with her emotions and (lack of) boundaries due to other problems, and it seems that she is only getting worse at it.
Don't know what else to say for someone who insists on being so indefensible and illogical.

Her attacking that small cookie company on social media like that surely gives them grounds to sue her for defamation? She probably doubled their IG followers with her antics, she has promoted them big time if anything.
Anyway, she has such a miserable, negative, lame aura. She really needs help.

Another day another apology.
I do hope sincerely that she is getting some therapy. This constant need of creating issues and making arguments out of thin air is something that needs to be addressed with a professional. I'm not liking her current musical output but she's talented and I wish nothing but the best for her. It's just tiresome trying to find a positive narrative for her.

That is a very "sorry you were offended" non-apology, but ok Demi. Her attacking that small cookie company on social media like that surely gives them grounds to sue her for defamation? She probably doubled their IG followers with her antics, she has promoted them big time if anything. If her tweets had caused them to lose any business, the store could sue. But like you said, she boosted their business. The only brand she defamed with this mess was her own.
