I fully committed this phone number to memory so I could remember what the f**k to call that song. “273-8255” <iframe width="26.519999999999982" height="4.759999999999991" style="position: absolute; width: 26.519999999999982px; height: 4.759999999999991px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 15px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_2531092" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="26.519999999999982" height="4.759999999999991" style="position: absolute; width: 26.52px; height: 4.76px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 1263px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_13240486" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="26.519999999999982" height="4.759999999999991" style="position: absolute; width: 26.52px; height: 4.76px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 15px; top: 177px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_80812751" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="26.519999999999982" height="4.759999999999991" style="position: absolute; width: 26.52px; height: 4.76px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 1263px; top: 177px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_87627888" scrolling="no"></iframe> Is it bad it's really easy for me to remember it? How is Old Town Road still gaining in points? 11th week at #1 and still gaining points while over double the points of #2. I was skeptical of this breaking the One Sweet Day/Despacito record a few weeks ago, but now I think it's feasible.
How many points was Despacito ahead of the #2 song during it's 11th through 16th weeks at #1?

Oh my god, not again with the "x song deserves #1". If the song didn't get the most points during the week, then simply, it doesn't deserve the top spot. And OTR's weeks at #1 aren't unfair, it has had 2x the amount of points during a lot of weeks during it's run at #1.

Holy s**t, Khalid and Billie both peaking at #2! Ugh, I'm so proud and also mad. Proud to see the two succeed so much after discovering them so early in their careers, but mad that they won't peak at #1 because of the damn juggernaut at the top. There's always at least one song/artist that spends a seemingly unfair amount of time at the top of the charts each year. It seems that in 2019, that person is Lil Nas X. Okay, but I didn't say it was unfair. Oh my god, not again with the "x song deserves #1". Literally no one is saying this, though.

So far, I'd say it's been Lil Nas X, no? Old Town Road is spending AT LEAST 14 weeks at #1. I also hear that he has another single ready to go. I hope it breaks the record I believe it can and it will.

In 2018 it was Drake. Waiting to see who it will be in 2019. Hasn’t happened yet. 😎 So far, I'd say it's been Lil Nas X, no? Old Town Road is spending AT LEAST 14 weeks at #1. I also hear that he has another single ready to go. Oh, he's definitely being a one-hit wonder. Or at best, a very minor second hit like Desiigner.

He really only does have ONE hit record under his belt. People said the same thing about Cardi B when Bodak Yellow became a hit and we've seen how wrong those people were. I think Lil Nas X has all the tools to extend his career, even if he never scores another hit like Old Town Road. He has a great management team and label situation. So far, he's milked Old Town Road as a single and as a movement the best way he could possibly have. I think his next single does well, too (I don't see it performing nearly as well as Old Town Road), and he drops a project soon after that drops. He might have an Iggy-esque career where he has one big album era and then fades out. Who knows? His story is still being written, but so far, it's been great for the guy.

Meme songs/novelties are not career makes. The only reason Lil Dicky can do it is because he has the connections, and even then, he only has one major hit.

Despacito's points lead over Wild Thoughts? 73%Old Town Road's projected points lead over bad guy or Talk? ~150%

Lil Nas X is performing on the BET Awards with Billy Ray Cyrus on June 23rd
I believe that's the first TV performance of the song, and also he has discounts and what not to pull up under his sleeve
It's definitely coming for the record.

The one-hit wonder tag being used while the first hit still has not really peaked yet is amusing.
You never really know, for about a decade Billy Ray Cyrus was considered a one-hit wonder and now look

^Talk is probably Khalid's most generic song which is probably the reason why it has been the most successful. Funny, because I would say it's his least generic. That Disclosure production really sets it apart from his other singles.

Lil Nas X is going to be a one hit wonder just like Old Town Road was going to be a short-lived meme that was going to last for 2 weeks. ^Talk is probably Khalid's most generic song which is probably the reason why it has been the most successful. Funny, because I would say it's his least generic. That Disclosure production really sets it apart from his other singles. Yep, ''Talk'' is the best and least generic song on his new album. If we wanna talk most generic, we can talk about trash that is ''Better''.

Anyhow, I’m sure the 2020’s will see a plethora of 16+ week number ones; the record of of “One Sweet Day” and “Despacito” will be LONG forgotten by 2029.

Thotiana is another song that always lose streams on Mondays. Despacito and UpTown Funk! usually gained sales on Saturdays and lost on Mondays. I guess it's because these songs have such a party, weekend vybe. OTR peaked with 5.2M combined on U.S. Spotify, the second most streams in a day (Nonstop - 5.7M) and 35M+ weekly which is by far the biggest week on U.S. Spotify history. But isn't that a bit unfair? The version that's been #1 for 10 weeks is the remix, but don't points from the original song also count towards that? It had to be combined with it's original version to put up those Spotify numbers you mentioned, but the lone remix version didn't do anything close to that. What are the peak numbers ONLY the remix reached? Right now, it's barely putting up 1.5 million daily streams on Spotify US. I don't know, I don't feel good about songs that ride the charts with multiple versions. I felt the same way about Ed Sheeran's Perfect. He released like 3-4 versions and the points from each version counted towards one song. Can't compare songs like that with other songs that have just one version. I remember when the Weeknd extended his stay at #1 by releasing remixes to I Can't Feel My Face with Eminem and another with Nicki Minaj. Things like that just come across at tacky to me, even though it's stuff that's always been done, lol. The remix with Eminem was "The Hills" not "I Cant feel my face".

Even if Lil Nas X doesnt get a second hit, he'll still be in the public eye. Dude is a meme master, I have memes saved on my phone from like July last year and they're from him. If he doesn't stick around in the music industry, he'll certainly stick around on social media.

YoutTube is ~35% of OTR's points this week and it was less than 30% for most of its chart run. No song at its peak was as strong on on-demand streaming (Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, Tidal, etc) as OTR has been for 10 weeks. Spotify is less than 40% of its on-demand streams and less than 15% of its overall streams. That's why it doesn't "feel" like it has 115M+ streams. ...and OTR's sales and more than decent. We're in 2019 and selling 60k+ for 10 weeks actually is really impressive.

I think Lil Nas X has done a good job of making himself known beyond the song. A lot of one-hit-wonders aren’t able to break out from their hits and become known enough to build their brand up beyond their hit. Lil is doing that and getting himself involved so I can see him sticking around in some capacity - even if as an occasional featured artist on a song or a music video.

Lil Nas X on Why He's Not Worried About People Calling Him a One-Hit Wonder Hannah Lifshutz ByHannah Lifshutz
editor/writer | @h4nn4hh Jun 03, 2019
Lil Nas X's ascendance to fame has been rapid, to say the least. After reaching the coveted No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for his track "Old Town Road," all eyes shifted towards his upcoming EP: 7. In his first cover story for Teen Vogue, the rapper opened up about viral fame, the Billboard controversy, and why he's not worried about people branding him as a one-hit wonder. lil-nas-teen-vogue Image via Teen Vogue/Camila Falquez
After releasing "Old Town Road," he explained that he diligently promoted it across social media platforms, in hopes of making his imprint on the industry. “If I’m sleeping, somebody else is up there doing what I’m finna do,” he told the publication. Given his meme-making background, the self-proclaimed "internet baby" is well-versed in viral content, and thus entrusted himself with circulating his own music.
"At first, I was just bored, like, 'Hey, Twitter, I made a song,'" he said. "But I'm like, ‘Wait, this is really hard.’ Then I made another one, and it didn't make any noise. I was overtrying. A lot of it was me trying to be something that people would like instead of making music that I would like. Around my fifth song, the melodies and flows were coming to my head with no effort. I was like, 'This is something I want to do.'" lil-nas-x-teen-vogue Image via Teen Vogue/Camila Falquez
Lil Nas X also talked about the Billboard controversy and explained that he believes country music can contain elements from other genres, but because he's a black man, he was forced to confront racially-biased obstacles. “You can have your country song with trap elements, but if it’s by known country artists, then it's allowed. A black guy who raps comes along, and he's on top of the country chart, it's like, ‘What the fuck?’"
In terms of how he reached the mainstream so quickly, the rapper explained that he doesn't believe Billboard removing "Old Town Road" from the country charts is the sole catalyst behind his success. “It definitely played a part, but it didn't overpower to the point where the Billboard situation was bigger than the song,” he said of the controversy. “By me being involved in something like that, it doesn't make me feel bad. It makes me feel even more accomplished in a way.”
However, going from a relatively unknown musician to the artist currently reigning the Billboard Hot 100 doesn't come without its challenges. During the interview, Lil Nas addressed the "one-hit wonder" speculation, a prediction he's confronted in the past, and shared why he isn't worried about his career slowing down.
“I've watched this happen over and over and over and over again. I've been the hater before. I've hated for no reason, so I'm seeing out [of] their eyes. They're hoping that this doesn't happen,” he explained. “They don't know shit.”
You can read the full Teen Vogue cover story here.
Lil Nas X revealed the tracklist for 7, which you can check out below:
