She's definitely not a gay icon, especially compared to the other artists you listed. I'm 25, and I'm probably the only hardcore Swiftie in my group of gay guy friends. My friends were a little more into her during the reputation era (go figure) because her image was "sexier," but I did not hear YNTCD at all during Pride month. Ariana and Dua Lipa are the current 'it girls' among the gays (or at least the local community I'm familiar with here in Toronto). I'd say even CRJ has a more prominent gay fanbase than Taylor; she headlined Toronto Pride. Yep, she enjoyed brief gay interest during Reputation but it takes more than just saying you support gay rights to be a gay icon lol. Its kind of weird to me that this is the era "for the gays" as quoted by her, but her music seems straighter than ever to me, somehow. Don't call me out for that I know it doesn't make sense Like, they threw some rainbows in the visuals but forgot to put the rainbow in the music. Anyway, I hope some Reputation leftovers somehow make it on the cd. That, or what we have heard is not indicative of the rest of the cd, somehow. Me and YNTCD are my least favorite first single and follow up from her ever. You are right though! Also a gay icon would have embraced the community before 2019, I feel like YNTCD was a way for Taylor to catch up lol. She was closeted as a democrat and LGBTQ ally from Pennsylvania in Nashville/country genre so now she's overcompensating. It's all good -- I don't mind things being extra gay and straights standing up for the gays.

It is strange now that I think a little about it (and I realize this is potential to go down a deep wormhole) but Taylor has never really been a gay icon the way a lot of her peers have been, both in country and pop. She's a solo woman, she's seen as manipulative, she's clearly in control, etc, etc, but she hasn't been embraced by any gays I know the way most others have been: the obvious ones, Britney, Gaga, Ariana, Adele, Rihanna then you have Carly Rae, Florence, Kesha, Kacey, even Katy and Miley.

She put a gay storyline in her video for "Mean" way back in the Speak Now era as well as voicing support in a plethora of other ways throughout her career. It maybe wasn't as "in your face" as it is now, but she has been showing signs of support for a while now. I really don't think it is problematic if she isn't a gay icon or id she doesn't have a large gay following at the end of the day (so long as she is supportive of the movement which she is). It's not as if being a gay icon makes an artist better or worse. lol

Thank god the gays don't like her. They always let down their divas and they end up flopping.

Taylor may not be a gay icon in the same way as many other female musicians but honestly she probably has just as many gay fans than many of her peers, if not more. She is certified for 43.5 million albums and 121 million singles through RIAA. Surely a ton of gay people are part of those purchases.

A lot of character development for miss swift, who faked a country twang and sang that line in mid 2000's only to end up being YNTCD Taylor. I never said being a gay icon makes any artist better or worse. What I'll say now is that if gays like an artist (even if that artist is not a "gay icon"), that artist is usually good, and TS has many gay fans, so yeah.

She wrote the song when she was like 16/17 years old. I think like literally every other human being on Earth we develop, learn, and mature in a plethora of ways as we age. It is only natural that she wouldn't be the same person she was 13 years ago and I know we have all said some stupid shit as teenagers.

I think my main problem with that, looking back, is how she had that tailored persona for years on end, just to conform to the Nashville standards when she probably would have been way more progressive earlier on had she started in pop. I like the Lover era Taylor a lot. Making up with KP, supporting LGBT/pro-choice/liberal causes in her ways, and she's more reflective than ever in her interviews and all.

Straight people are allowed to enjoy pop music too... Mostly straight girls in the case of her fans but I think a lot of younger (straight) guys were fans already during Fearless/Speak Now era. I think Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson, Hilary Duff, Evanescence and Hayley Williams had predominantly straight fanbases during the 00s too from what I remember. Is it fair to say that dance-pop audiences lean more towards gays than pop-rock? As well as music that is more sexually provocative/rebellious rather than more romantic songs about crushes and break-ups?
As for the present, there was a pretty strong gay/pride presence at the reputation tour in Dallas. Also the one couple I saw propose to each other during "you don't need to save me, but would you run away with me" was a lesbian one.

Taylor has always been at least mildly supportive of LGBT+ but I do think she is also so...tone deaf sometimes? Which, I guess makes sense for a very straight privileged white girl raised in a conservative place and she should probably get kudos for not being a totally horrible person. I like Taylor-I just wish she would never say she is making stuff for "gays" again or call our systematic oppression "shade" That being said, maybe she will have better music for my gay soul on the actual cd. Reputation still hits me in the right spots even today.

Idk about specifically during the 2000s era of music but Kelly clarkson has a large gay fan base. Also Avril’s one of my fav artists of all time (I’m gay) though unsure what her fan base demographics are like. I’m just happy she wasn’t brought up

An exec for Atlantic said the statistics showed that streams for “Love So Soft” were pretty evenly split between men and women (which shocked the exec for some reason), and I’m more than willing to bet that most of those men were not straight lol.

Just curious, why does one's sexuality matter? Music is music, gay straight bi asexual etc...
If I meet someone and they say they love Drake or Britney I literally don't assume their sexuality, nor honestly care...

Is this ever gonna get to 8? What’s its CHR Pop run? Probably not, as this will probably start dropping after the album release – Sucker is still 1,000 spins ahead of this and not falling fast enough.

Based on published Mediabase updates since its release: 39-19-14-12-11-10-9-9-9-9 I think it is safe to say 9 is its peak.

If they can keep this going another week past Sunday, it should be able to reach #8 before “Boyfriend” catches up, but that’s the absolute highest it could go at this point.
