I like the album but I wish there were stronger hooks and melodies. Melodrama and Pure Heroine both are better in that regard.
I will say that the first half was much stronger than the second half. The Man with the Axe, Dominoes, and Leader of a New Regime were instant skips. I’ve already deleted them off from the album.
Mood Ring is heavenly and deserves single treatment. Please send this to radio, perform and promo the hell out of this! It’s too good to be overlooked!

Might be in the minority but I really enjoy it. Definitely a departure for her from the darker, broodier elements of her previous two records, but I find the whole thing to be very refreshing. Kind of a cathartic listen. The spoken monologue at the end of “Secrets From A Girl” is cheeky and fantastic.
“Mood Ring” should’ve been the lead single. That song’s production is euphoric and could be the commercial hit from this album (though I know she’s made it pretty clear she doesn’t give a s**t about that stuff.)

Dear Ella...why didn't you give us this performance when this song just hit radio years ago? It should've been your biggest hit

Idk I find people being surprised by the direction of this album is funny to me. It feels like a pretty natural progression from the final revelations of Melodrama

I LOVE THE LORDE.
I've been listening all day and have come to the conclusion that this album is spectacular. There's not a bad moment on the album, and NO, none of it is boring. It's laid-back and doesn't rely on big huge pop beats and hooks, and I quite like that. It makes the critics figure it out. It's refreshing. And as others have stated, this is such a continuation and natural progression in sound from the final moments of Melodrama.
Listening to this on Dolby Atmos in Apple Music is a spiritual experience. I needed a moment with "California" at first, so on first listen it did have its (very) slight hiccups, but I've already grown to love that one like I love every other second of this incredible record. My Top 5 is very likely to change as I continue to spend time in this very smartly realized world that Ella has created with this album, but here it is as of this moment:
1. Fallen Fruit 2. Oceanic Feeling 3. The Path 4. Mood Ring 5. Solar Power
Easily an A+ record for me. 10/10. I hope L4 isn't another lightyear away.

Ehh. I really like the SoCal sound of this album and the vocal layering, but her songwriting has taken a hit. The more open sound shines a harsh light on how meandering a lot of the songs are, especially the verses. The verses sink more than half the stuff here. It's unfortunate because her voice and the sound are a good combination. The Path California (though this is one of the ones where the verses just aren't tight enough to make it reach its full potential) Secrets from... (the spoken part by Robyn at the end is whatever though) The Man with the Axe Mood Ring That's probably what I'll go back to. I agree with everyone who has said that Mood Ring should have kicked off the campaign. If anyone has seen Six Feet Under, remember when Ruth joins The Plan? This sounds like something that'd be played at those meetings. Devil Marlena Nylund, as Pulse's top lesbian campfire connoisseur, I'm curious what you think of this project.

Psychadelic folk. Sounds like it was recorded in bong water. I dig it, through. I love how her 3 albums sound nothing alike. Also, JackOff was having wayyy too much fun noodling away, but he is so damn delightful, so it's OK. But, also, SLAY those instrumentals! How anyone could call this boring, I really don't know. It has so many subtle flourishes and production tricks, but still sounds classic. It's also kinda creepy, but in a cool way? Very unique. It's not straight up hippy-dippy like I was expecting. I dig the lyrics, too. I don't really care for The Man With The Axe though. The last 30 seconds redeems the song, though. Leader Of The New Regime I treat as an interlude, so it's on the bottom, for that reason alone. The fact that I didn't pay for this makes it even better, but it's still strong. Not as strong as her first two, but it's definitely a worthy addition to her catalog.
Fallen Fruit (WHAT IN THE MELODRAMA?! What a masterpiece!) Helen Of Troy (this troll putting a song this strong as her bonus track from the music box, but damn...) Big Star (this is beautiful! wow!) Mood Ring (first time hearing this and I really enjoy it. It has a little something to it that sounds more radio-friendly, while still keeping the hippie vibe, so I can see it being a single. the abrupt ending sucks though.) Solar Power (a SONG) Secrets From A Girl (Who's Seen It All) Stoned At The Nail Salon California Dominoes (I dig this pettiness!) Hold No Grudge (the first minute kinda sucks, but when it changes, wow. again with the shitty ending, though!) The Path Oceanic Feeling The Man With The Axe Leader Of The New Regime

(I wasn’t able to get the music box thingy) EDIT: never mind lol. LOVE both of those songs. They’re just as incredible as anything else from the album proper.

Devil Marlena Nylund, as Pulse's top lesbian campfire connoisseur, I'm curious what you think of this project. While I got the vinyl today, the new Anderson East album has been getting my attention for the day but I’m hoping to give this some dedication sometime this week. Seeing people saying this is reminiscent of late 90s/early 2000s singer songwriter vibe is giving me high hopes. Don’t let me down.

They’re just as incredible as anything else from the album proper. Obviously from the box, fam! About the box: I thought it would be bigger, but it's the size of a standard CD case, just without a CD. I do like the cards and the poster and the booklet is nice. Also, I thought the download card was clever - Lorde's business card as an "energy consultant" for International Solar Institute - New Zealand Division. Just makes for a cool collectible set. Plus, through the site, there is access to all bonus content (song snippets and demos, exclusive march, etc.) that she will continuously update. Of course, none of this would matter, if the album itself wasn't strong. Critics got it wrong in this case. Should be at least in the low 80s.

Enjoying this well enough so far but it could be tighter. The last 3/4 songs (except Mood Ring) lose me a bit. Too indistinct and meandering.
Can't help but feel they got a bit too caught up in the vibe/aesthetic and lost focus. Not as sharp as her previous.

‘Helen of Troy’ definitely would have been one of the better songs on the standard version. It’s definitely not something I’ll pay $22 for on Amazon with the box set.

It's really strange though because with time, IMO, 'Green Light' has become an iconic cult-classic song that people really adore. Kind of a bit more important than any chart statistic.

I'm still not feeling this album as a whole, and I wish this interview wasn't behind a paywall so I could read it as a whole, but I love her attitude in the thread excerpts. Props.

I think Melodrama as a whole made more impact than the chart performance of it and the songs would lead you to believe. There's a reason why it's still mentioned in like 75% of the interviews she's done for Solar Power.
But there's also no denying that some of the songs could have been handled better. I see no reason why "Perfect Places" and "Homemade Dynamite" couldn't have been hits. "Supercut" and "Sober" had potential too. But it's not her focus.

That’s actually good numbers considering several factors: no CDs, boxed sets being not counted, mixed reviews, and lack of a hit.

Green Light’s streaming numbers are about the same as Team. It’s indeed REALLY well liked and remembered in certain demographic circles (LGBT), and clearly her fan base loves it.
