I’m ready for OTR to break the record and it’s definitely possible now. Week 14 with a huge lead. It’s happening!
A black queer artist with his first hit (which is a country rap song) breaking the record for most weeks at number 1. And it features a one hit wonder country artist from the 90s is just more icing on the cake.

2019 has been more exciting than 2016-18 that’s for sure. Both in charts and in the actual music on those charts.

But in a month we’ll all go back to saying a Bruno Post Adele collaboration will definitely break the record.

While it's kinda amazing that Lil Nas X, being black and queer, is getting all this, it's due to the song being more than music. Most of the streams come from user generated content which is absolutely unprecedented in the history of charts. Not taking away anything from the song, but its performance on music outlets such as Apple Music and Spotify, let alone radio, is not matching the exceptional chart success.
That and the two prominent versions around has brought us here. But to break records one must be exceptional, I guess, more than music. This had it all right and boxes ticked in a way that no other song can and will be able to.
I might sound bitter but it's just because if the song really had like 5 million listens on Spotify daily, and record breaking airplay, it would be easier to take.

^Despacito had two versions too and if I remember correctly, abnormally large YouTube views. To break the record, you gotta pull out the tricks.

why does gary feel the need to talk about OTR possibly breaking the record every seven minutes?
anyway, if goodbyes hits #2 lil nas x will have blocked three artists twice: Taylor (ME & YNTCD), Shawn (IICHY & Señorita) and Post (Wow & Goodbyes)

Yes, but it was the official video that was watched that much, the official video of OTR is only at 202 million WW, after being available for almost two months. That said, I believe OTR would've been number one this week without the views of user generated videos too, but it would've been much more unlikely to break the record. With those views, it takes practically a miracle to prevent it from doing so.

^Despacito had two versions too and if I remember correctly, abnormally large YouTube views. To break the record, you gotta pull out the tricks. ...and when Despacito charted, YouTube counted the same as on-demand streaming. In 2019, it's harder for YT driven songs to succeed. OTR with that 2017 formula would be at 70k+ points right now and 10+ weeks with a 2:1 points lead over the #2 song (breaking IWALY's record). Despacito: 16 weeks at #1 on Streaming Songs Chart 12 weeks at #1 on On-Demand Chart Old Town Road: 14 weeks at #1 on Streaming Songs Chart 14 weeks at #1 on On-Demand Chart Both songs had UGC videos and that's OK. It's much better to have user generated videos than passive listening, IMO. OTR broke the on-demand record for most streams in a week by 15M (83M vs. God's Plan's 68M) and it's only the third song ever to spent 14 weeks at #1 on the on-demand chart. If OTR spends 17 weeks at #1... deserved. The same goes for Despacito (16 weeks at #1 in streaming + 17 weeks at #1 in sales) and UpTown Funk (9 weeks at #1 in all metrics simultaneously). It's not like these songs have been lucky, they're all very strong.

Honestly I think 2019 is the worst year for music in a long time but this is coming from a huge fan of rap. I can see how pop/other genre fans could think this year has been really good so far.

Rap has been dominating for several years now. It’s not reasonable to expect one genre of music to be so prominent for so long. But that’s also why rock fans are so jaded because rock was prominent for decades until it wasn’t anymore.

As for OTR pulling out all the stops, I don’t think it’s a bad thing. Music is often more than just hearing a song on the radio or watching a video. Music can and should be an experience and an artist or song that does that successfully deserves to be rewarded, whether it’s through traditional means or something different. There’s a reason why songs became big after being used in pivotal moments during a movie or something.

2019 is awesome or it sucks depending on how much you rely on charts to find music you like.
For me it's been kind of cool because there's been a lot more variety inside top 10, and there have been a few cool chart feats (Ari gets entire top 3, OTR blocks so many songs, Drake doesn't automatically go top 5 with a lazy single :kii: , etc...)

Bieber ruined Despacito for me, I'm afraid he will ruin bad guy too.

So Bad Guy Remix with Bieber is coming. Any chance this messes up OTR hopeful upcoming record? depends on the reception really. If the original version can maintain top 10 on spotify while the remix tops the charts for the week by a sizable lead, then sure. Is it likely? Probably not

I don't know if anyone here listens to Gallant, but I'm a huge fan and he makes really great R&B music. He just dropped the second single from his forthcoming sophomore album (his debut album, Oology is REALLY good) and I haven't stopped listening to it. It was the debuted by Zane Lowe as the World Record yesterday.

Is Beyoncé's "Spirit" doing anything? #17 on iTunes, will have to wait for Apple Music and Spotify if it does appear there.
