Who knows? Maybe it breaking such a longstanding record, the media may pick it up. Something like Entertainment Tonight does report stuff like this. My local news station make little spots in their news for stuff like Billboard chart records.

What rule should be made? How about capping the remix total at some number or establishing recurrent status rules for a song with too many remixes to punish an artist for being creative?
It would be a dumb and useless policy either way. Any song can get as many remixes as they want. There are plenty of hit records that are given several DJ mixes. OTR remixes haven't even made that much of a difference to suggest any silly rule change.

The last part of that post was the point. A rule change would punish the artist for being creative. Never a good thing just because many are upset that OTR has been on top this long

Maybe God exists and, in order to prevent a 17th week at the top for that song, Billboard will consider getting out of the Hot 100 formula those unofficial videos, memes and all that garbage. Official remixes, no matter how many they are, seem fair for the chart game, but the memes or all that UGC....what the ****, people?!

Yeah... do that and Old Town Road is still #1 by a big margin. 15-week on-demand #1 (and counting) 12-week sales #1 (and counting) Imagine thinking it's only YouTube... :kii:

Without Youtube it would have fallen last week but probably gone back up this week I think? I don't recall how close it was to #2 when it first reached #1.

How massive of an event do you guys think this will be? Do yall think itll sink into mainstream media anywhere or is this mostly gonna be a music/chart fan thing When "End of the Road" by Boyz II Men hit 11 and 12 wks at #1 back in 1992, some of the mainstream media actually DID take notice; the strange thing is that you would've thought they would've compared it to the Debbie Boone and Olivia Newton-John records of 10 wks at #1 in 1977 and 1981 respectively, but that's not what happened. Instead they were actually comparing it to the Elvis Presley "Don't Be Cruel/Hound Dog" record of 11 wks set back in 1956! (pre-Hot 100) These days Billboard barely even acknowledges that Elvis record because they like to pretend that nothing mattered in music before the birth of the Hot 100 in August 1958, but the mainstream media didn't care about that so they highlighted the Elvis record instead.

Ok, but how are these unfair? If an artist tries something that makes a song more popular, how is that billboardβs fault? I wasn't referring particularly to remixes in that part of my post. There are a lot of flaws in Billboard's methodology currently. I was referencing that FROM what I had to say about Lil Nas X and his legion of remixes. I've never been against him doing all he can to break the record. I've said in previous weeks that I would love it if he did. We'll more than likely be over this kid by the end of the year and he'll never have a hit this big. My issues is in this particular practice becoming a thing. Merch/tour ticket bundles stared with one artist, now it's something damn near everyone does. The same thing will more than likely happen with this remix thing and THEN it'll be a problem. Ok, but why would remixes become a problem? I remember people saying this when inserting guest artists on a song as a last ditch effort back in 2011 and it was a brief trend but people lost interest quickly. Personally I love them. Never anything with with more content or with random artists jumping on a new version of a song. If people arenβt interested, itβll stop. Iβd rather a new remix with a featured guest artist than a deep discount on digital, super prominent placement on key Spotify playlists or radio payola or whatever. To me, thatβs βcheatingβ the system. Releasing a new version isnβt because it gives people the ability to listen or not listen.

Bill, bored - your layouts are incredible. How long do they take?
You should approach Joel Whitburn's Record Research company - they are struggling with what to do about collecting the 2010s decade Hot 100 charts (missing print dates, 3 pages per week, etc) in a book or as PDFs. Maybe you can work out a deal with them? Hell, your layouts are better than BB's print versions!

First day of airplay tracking: Billie Eilish - bad guy - 117.70M (+1.49) Lizzo - Truth Hurts - 87.56M (+2.78) Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello - Senorita - 72.06M (+2.58) Lil Nas X - Old Town Road - 69.85M (-2.49) 47.85M away from Billie 17.71M away from Lizzo 2.21M away from Shawn/Camila I don't mean to be that guy but is comparing OTR's airplay relevant now? It's streams are still high enough where airplay is essentially a non issue now that bad guy's remix is tumbling. I don't mean to be that guy, but did my post bother you that much?

As much as you might dislike UGC, it is necessary in this current landscape. Memes and music have gone hand in hand since the early 2000s. UGC helps those meme songs like Harlem Shake and others to actually chart, which they should be if they're popular enough.

Most no one cares except music chart following geeks like us. It'll get some articles written about it on mainstream sites but yeah, most people won't know or care. People (of every age) who know I'm a chart geek always ask me what "the biggest hit ever" is. When I say "One Sweet Day" and "Despacito" they're surprised...which goes to show they never saw stories about them setting the record at the time.
