Retro Hot 100 - 11 years agoM.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” got a big boost in digital sales--from its inclusion in Slumdog Millionaire and Pineapple Express--sending it up 11 spots to #5. It peaked at #4 on the Hot 100, sold millions of downloads, rank 35th for the year and peaked at least top 20 on Alternative, Dance, Rap, Pop and Rhythmic. M.I.A.’s first of 2 top 10 entries. From barely in the Top 40 to the Top 5 in 2 weeks, what a smash.

Hoping Old town road spends an odd number of weeks at number one NOOOO! My OCD won't be able to handle that. Especially because we haven't had any songs spend 11, 13, 15, 17 or 19 weeks at #1 this decade. Excluding OTR of course. Cap it at 20 weeks please.

I really doubt bad guy will be #1 next week, but we'll see. Senorita is pretty much 'guaranteed' after the VMA performance.

Bad Guy and Señorita are already so close. Hopefully Billie's team sees this and releases a lyric video or something else before the week is over.

20 weeks for "Old Town Road", I could live with that.
Looks like "Senorita" might be the next #1.

August 22, 196401 02 Where Did Our Love Go - The Supremes (1st of 2 weeks at #1)02 01 Everybody Loves Somebody - Dean Martin 03 03 A Hard Day's Night - The Beatles 04 05 Under The Boardwalk - The Drifters 05 10 House Of The Rising Sun - The Animals 06 08 C'mon & Swim - Bobby Freeman 07 14 Because - The Dave Clark Five 08 13 Walk Don't Run '64 - The Ventures 09 06 Wishin' & Hopin' - Dusty Springfield 10 16 How Do You Do It - Gerry & The Pacemakers The girls from Detroit captured their first Hot 100 #1 as "Where Did Our Love Go" became the legendary Supremes first of 12 #1 singles the week of August 22nd, 1964. The rest of the top ten that week was a decidedly more British affair; with no less than 5 early British Invasion acts joining them there. Along with the Beatles who were still at #3 (after falling from the top spot 1 week earlier), were The Animals, who's "House of The Rising Sun" was headed to the top itself; the Dave Clark Five with their latest hit; British female singer Dusty Springfield with one of her first American hits; and the group that were once the Beatles' biggest rivals in their native Liverpool, Gerry & The Pacemakers, with a song that was once meant for the Fab Four themselves.

August 24, 197401 03 (You're) Having My Baby - Paul Anka (w/Odia Coates) (1st of 3 weeks at #1)02 01 The Night Chicago Died - Paper Lace 03 04 Tell Me Something Good - Rufus 04 02 Feel Like Makin' Love - Roberta Flack 05 13 I Shot The Sheriff - Eric Clapton 06 07 Waterloo - ABBA 07 08 Wildwood Weed - Jim Stafford 08 09 I'm Leaving It All Up To You - Donny & Marie Osmond 09 15 Rock Me Gently - Andy Kim 10 11 Keep On Smilin' - Wet Willie Paul Anka's "(You're) Having My Baby" was controversial from it's first note. This did not stop it however, from reaching the top of the Hot 100 the week of August 24th, 1974, and staying there for 3 weeks. The song, which is sung in first person, describes a man's joy at finding out that his wife/girlfriend? is pregnant with his child. Feminists immediately took the song to task for being too "sexist" since it only showed the man's side to this expecting news. Although there is a female who sings on the song as well, Odia Coates, she doesn't so much sing about her own feelings as she basically reinforces what Anka has already been singing when she joins in with him later in the song. Feminists were not pleased. But the actual lyrics to the song proved to be an even bigger sticking point; lyrics like these for instance: "Didn't have to keep it Wouldn't put you through it You could have swept it from your life But you wouldn't do it" Abortion had only been made legal throughout the United States a year earlier, with the landmark Roe Vs Wade decision of 1973. it was a controversial issue then, it's a controversial issue now, so as you can imagine, a pop song which made a reference to it pushed a lot of people's buttons at the time. "(You're) Having My Baby" regularly appears on a lot of "worst of the 70's" or even "worst song of all time" lists. On a brighter note, it was a career highlight for Anka, who hadn't had a #1 hit since "Lonely Boy", way back in 1959.
