Don't let the Beyoncè stans in this forum get you. They'll hound on you for insinuating her last few projects flopped or underperformed. "Tremendous results" =/= "#1 on SPS", I think it is obvious with the categorization they made there that they mean cultural and critical success. Beyonce charted 3 albums in the top ten this year, 2 of which were her old material, which I'd also call pretty damn cool. Anywho, I was just going to say there's a thread for five questions or whatever this segment is. I think everyone's favorite headphone smiley Gary made it. How was The Gift ''old material''? It's a bunch of brand new, newly-recorded songs. Everything is Love came out last year and it also wasn't an album with old material. Only Homecoming was and even that project had a newly-recorded song added to it. She charted two albums in the top 10 this year, not three. I think calling the results of any of those three projects ''tremendous'' is a gross overstatement. People widely forgot and moved on from each of those albums soon after they were released and two of those projects featured new, never-before-heard music. Like you said, all of them debuting in the top 10 is cool, but calling them a tremendous success is not it. I just realized there was a whole thread dedicated to Billboard's Chart Beat Five Questions. I didn't know that before and I'll be sure to post whatever other Five Questions article I want to in there.

Homecoming is nominated for what, 6 EMMYs? Most watched live-stream ever. "Before I Let Go" became a low-key hit, too. Everything is Love was 2018. I don't think it's gross to say these were significant works that had tremendous results in empowering communities and initiating/catalyzing certain conversations. I'm not going to go in deeper because it's been discussed way too many times at this point. If you get it, you get it. If you don't, you're missing out.

Why the hell are the last two pages (old albums, CP, BB discussion) in the next week's Hot 100 thread? Serious question!

It's amusing how pressed you are You need to stop saying that. Calling an album what it is doesn't equate to me being pressed, lmao. Yet when someone says anything remotely truthful about Care Package, you go into full “but actually” mode. It’s hilarious! 😂

It’s hilarious! 😂 All I've done is readjust people's expectations for an album filled with songs as old as 8 years. Also, The Gift was an album filled with brand new music that underperformed, based on it's first week figures. Care Package is an album filled with old, previously released music that didn't underperform. Two different instances.

You're making it seem like it was an album full of brand new Beyoncé tracks with the same appeal as her past two albums when that's not even close to the case. It's much more comparable to the third Hunger Games soundtrack Lorde curated than anything. A niche side project, just like Drake's latest.
We seriously need to stop jumping through hoops to discredit artists we don't like/boosting oir faves. It's not a good look.

Onto another topic.
I can’t wait for the Decade-End charts.
Fun Facts:
1) Rihanna will be the only artist to appear in the top five of the ‘Hot 100 Artists’ list across two decades since the 1990’s.
• 2000’s: #4
• 2010’s: #1 or #2
(Mariah Carey came close in the 90’s and 00’s: She was #1 for the 90’s & #11 for the 2000’s).
2) Rihanna will be the only artist who appeared in the top 20 of the 2000’s “Artist of the Decade” list that will appear in the top 10 of the 2010’s “Artist of the Decade” list. An upward climb.
• 2000’s: #16
• 2010’s: #2 or #3
(Mariah Carey came close again in the 90’s and 00’s. She was #1 for the 90’s and #11 for the 00’s).
MY FAVES! LEGENDS!

It's much more comparable to the third Hunger Games soundtrack Lorde curated than anything. A niche side project, just like Drake's latest. We seriously need to stop jumping through hoops to discredit artists we don't like/boosting oir faves. It's not a good look. How do the songs on the Gift not have appeal? The songs on The Gift aren't that different from the catchy songs she's made in the past. Their production might be a little different, but that's mostly it. It's not like she was singing in a native African language for most of the album. That's quite literally the most radio-friendly she's been over the course of an album in God knows how long. All those songs are catchy, have a vibe or are danceable. EVERYONE online spoke about how catchy the songs were and how great of a listening experience the album was. Brown Skin Girl immediately stood out as a fan favorite. The Gift trended online, Beyoncé fans made it a big deal to talk about it, but as soon as the projections came out, excuses started flying. Would you have said any of this if it moved 150K units first week and debuted at #1? No. It's not comparable to the Hunger Games soundtrack Lorde curated because Lorde was on only 4 of the 14 songs on that album. It also wasn't marketed as a new Lorde album. All she did was curate it. There are 13 actual songs on The Gift. Beyoncé appears on 10 of them. It was marketed as an album BY BEYONCÈ, PRODUCED BY BEYONCÈ. It's actually more comparable to Drake's More Life. Both projects featured the lead artists on most songs, both projects featured artists on standalone songs and both projects leaned into diasporic sounds sonically. No one is trying to discredit Beyoncé. At least, I know that isn't what I'm trying to do. I said SEVERAL TIMES in the thread about the album's projection that the album underperforming didn't mean Beyoncé as an artist was over or that her next solo effort wasn't going to perform better. People suggested that Everything is Love underperformed for various reasons like it being a surprise release, being released on Tidal first, being a collab album with Jay-Z (which some Beyoncé fans might have not been as eager to support as much as a solo effort by her) and I agreed. I don't even consider Everything is Love an underperformance because it moved over 120K units first week. It just didn't debut at #1. I don't consider Homecoming a flop because it was a surprise live album filled with old Beyoncé songs and I don't know many live albums that have smashed the charts upon release. I was curious about The Gift because it was announced days before it was released, people were able to view the tracklist and see that it was indeed a new Beyoncé album with new songs and it got a massively positive reception upon release. I figured that since it featured new Beyoncé music, her fans would at least support the album in it's first week, just off her name alone (most major artists gain this power over the course of a successful career), but that didn't happen. The Gift, like I said earlier, also features the most catchy music she's made on a solo project since her I Am... Sasha Fierce in 2008. I actually wanted to have a nuanced discussion about it's performance. I've noted it in some threads since, but I've been looking forward to discussing how low album sales are right now and not just in pure sales. It wasn't long before anyone who dared to say the album flopped or underperformed started getting attacked. People were saying by saying the album underperformed, we were suggesting that her career was over and she wasn't a star anymore, etc. I noted SEVERAL TIMES in that thread that that wasn't what any of us meant, but no one wanted to hear it. We couldn't even have an actual discussion about it. I have personally said several times in several threads in the last couple of weeks that we should all reduce our expectations of the commercial performance of songs/albums from the biggest acts henceforth. I said it about Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande and Drake.

The more I learn about how Billboard functioned pre Soundscan the sketchier it gets R&R's charts pre-PPW were even worse. There's a reason people abandoned the phony "lists" and started using actual spin totals/unit sales/impressions to determine the charts. The reason they moved on to actual numbers was because there was finally the technology available to track those things in detail. Billboard worked with as much information as they could obtain. The only place you could get accurate numbers was from the labels themselves because they knew how many albums they had printed and shipped (which is why the RIAA was the standard for judging sales, because they would audit the labels -- and even then you could only get shipment totals, not actual sales). But that doesn't work for a weekly chart that's attempting to gauge actual sales, since shipments don't necessarily align to sales (and it's not like every store replenishes with a new shipment of every album every day or week), so the best they could do is get the reports from the stores themselves. Similar situation for radio. Until the technology became available, you had to rely on stations reporting their plays. Billboard was certainly less accurate back then compared to today, but I really think people need to remember the role technology plays in improving the data rather than implying Billboard was being sketchy or deliberately using inferior info back then.

I definitely don't blame Billboard, they were doing the best with what they could. R&R's a different story, they deliberately put off switching to PPW data even though nearly every station wanted them to. Even if Mediabase didn't switch to fulltime monitoring until 1998 I think they could've still switched to faxed play data way earlier, like other small trades like Network 40 and FMQB did.
